Chapter 3: The Stranger Behind the Lie
The name hung in the air like a warning.
“Michael?””
My father said it so quietly that, for a moment, I wondered if I had imagined it.
Nobody moved.
The giant screen still showed the frozen image of Vanessa standing near the window, the diamond ring in her hand, and a man standing beside her.
A man who was supposed to be a stranger.
But my father knew him.
That was the part that frightened everyone.
Vanessa looked at Daniel, and the color drained from her face.
“Daniel…”
My father didn’t look at her.
His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
The guests exchanged confused looks.
I looked up at my father.
I had never seen him look like that before.
Not angry.
Not sad.
Something worse.
Betrayed.
Mrs. Ellis carefully pressed pause on the footage.
“Mr. Blackwood, should I continue?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, please. Let me explain before you watch something you don’t understand.””
My father finally turned toward her.
“Explain what?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Explain why my wife was handing my property to another man?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the first time I saw her without her mask.
Not the elegant stepmother who always knew what to say.
Not the woman who could make adults believe anything.
Just Vanessa.
Cornered.
The footage continued.
The screen showed Vanessa handing the ring to Michael.
The man looked around nervously before taking it.
Then he placed something in her hand.
A small envelope.
The exchange lasted less than thirty seconds.
But thirty seconds was enough to destroy everything.
My father stepped closer to the screen.
“Who is Michael?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He’s someone I knew before you.””
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
“How long before me?””
She looked away.
That was an answer by itself.
A woman near the couch whispered, “Oh my God.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked back at him.
“Tell me the truth.””
For the first time that night, I heard fear in her voice.
“Daniel, it’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
She hesitated.
And my father laughed once.
A painful sound.
“You always say that when there’s something you don’t want me to know.””
I stood quietly near the wall.
Everyone was focused on Vanessa.
Nobody was looking at me anymore.
Nobody was calling me a thief.
Nobody was asking why I lied.
But somehow, I didn’t feel better.
Because even though the truth was coming out, I still remembered my father’s face when he thought I was guilty.
That look stayed.
Children don’t forget those moments.
They collect them.
They carry them.
Vanessa walked closer to Daniel.
“Michael was an old friend.””
“An old friend who took my ring?””
“No.””
“Then why did you give it to him?””
She looked around.
The guests.
The cameras.
The staff.
Me.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Because I needed help.””
My father stared at her.
“With what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Mrs. Ellis looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Blackwood…”
Everyone turned.
“There’s more footage.””
My father looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“The cameras don’t only record the living room.””
Mrs. Ellis clicked another option.
“The entrance camera captured Michael arriving.””
The screen changed again.
This time, the footage showed the front gate.
A black car pulled into the driveway.
A man stepped out.
Michael.
He looked around before entering the mansion.
My father watched silently.
Then the video showed something strange.
Michael wasn’t acting like a guest.
He didn’t ring the bell.
He didn’t wait for someone to open the door.
He used a key.
The room erupted.
“A key?””
“He had access to the house?””
My father’s hands tightened.
Vanessa looked terrified.
The video continued.
Michael walked through the mansion like he knew exactly where he was going.
Then he entered the living room.
That was when Vanessa appeared.
The two of them spoke.
The camera had no sound, but their body language told a story.
Michael looked angry.
Vanessa looked desperate.
Then she removed the diamond ring.
The same ring she later claimed had been stolen.
My father closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might collapse.
Because the truth was worse than believing a lie.
The truth meant he had invited someone dangerous into our home.
He had trusted the wrong person.
And because of that, he had hurt the one person who trusted him most.
Me.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“How long?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“How long has he been coming here?””
Vanessa said nothing.
My father’s voice grew sharper.
“How long?””
“A few weeks.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“A few weeks?”” he repeated.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know.””
The anger in my father’s face returned.
“So you lied to me.””
“I was scared.””
“You lied to me, brought a stranger into my house, gave him my ring, and then blamed my daughter?””
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn’t mean for it to go that far.””
Those words made me look at her.
Not because I understood everything.
But because I finally understood something important.
She knew.
She knew exactly what she had done.
My father noticed too.
His face changed.
“You didn’t mean for it to go that far?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
“You watched a seven-year-old child cry in front of everyone.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice shook.
“No, you don’t get to say my name like this is just a misunderstanding.””
The room became silent.
Then Michael’s face appeared again on the screen.
Mrs. Ellis looked at the footage.
“Mr. Blackwood…”
“What?””
“There is one more thing.””
She zoomed in.
Everyone leaned closer.
Michael had been holding something when he entered the house.
A folder.
He handed it to Vanessa.
My father frowned.
“What is that?””
Mrs. Ellis paused the video.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Turn it off.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately tried to recover.
“I mean… there’s no need to watch private conversations.””
My father stared at her.
“Private?””
He pointed at the screen.
“You brought someone into my house and involved my daughter in this.””
His voice lowered.
“I think we’re far beyond privacy.””
Mrs. Ellis pressed play.
The footage moved forward.
Michael gave Vanessa the folder.
She opened it.
Then she looked around to make sure nobody was watching.
She removed a document.
The camera wasn’t close enough to read the words.
But it caught the top corner.
A logo.
My father recognized it instantly.
His face went pale.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
He walked closer to the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Daniel…”
He turned around slowly.
“What did you steal from me?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door of the mansion suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A security guard stood there holding a tablet.
“Mr. Blackwood?””
My father looked over.
“What is it?””
The guard hesitated.
“I found something in the driveway.””
He walked into the room.
On the tablet was a photo.
A photograph of Michael’s car.
And beside the car…
was a second person.
Someone who had been waiting outside the entire time.
The guard looked at my father.
“Sir, there’s something else.””
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“The person in the car left this behind.””
He handed over a small envelope.
My father opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Vanessa.
Standing beside Michael.
But the date printed on the back was not from a few weeks ago.
It was from years earlier.
Before Vanessa ever met my father.
My father stared at the picture.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
May you like
And his voice became almost a whisper.
“Who are you really?””
