Chapter 6: The Enemy Who Was Already Inside
The words stayed in the air long after Dominic stopped speaking.
*The daughter is next.*
Three words.
But they carried twenty years of fear.
My father’s death.
My mother’s silence.
The strange offer from Sterling.
The rushed wedding.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
And I hated that I was starting to see the shape of it.
Because the shape looked like me.
I was not an accident.
I was a target.
Everett moved first.
“Lock down the estate.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Dominic nodded immediately.
“Already started.””
“Search every entrance.””
“Done.””
“Check the security footage from the last forty-eight hours.””
Dominic hesitated.
“Everett.””
“What?””
“The person who entered the archives knew exactly where to go.””
A silence followed.
Everett’s expression changed slightly.
“They had inside information.””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“So someone here helped them.””
Neither man answered.
They didn’t need to.
I looked around the study.
The beautiful furniture.
The expensive paintings.
The quiet halls.
A house full of people who smiled while hiding knives.
“Everyone here works for you?””
Everett looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then how do you know who to trust?””
His answer came quietly.
“I don’t.””
That surprised me.
The most powerful man in the room admitted he trusted nobody.
Not his employees.
Not his family.
Maybe not even himself.
Dominic walked toward the desk.
“There’s something else.””
Everett looked up.
“What?””
“The file wasn’t the only thing missing.””
My heart sank.
“What else?””
Dominic reached into his jacket and pulled out a small plastic bag.
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
Everett took it.
His eyes scanned the writing.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the message was clear.
*Ask your wife what her father really left behind.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Everett stared at me.
“I don’t know.””
But I knew he was lying.
Not completely.
Just enough.
“You know something.””
He looked away.
“Willa.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You keep saying you want honesty, but you’re doing the same thing everyone else does.””
His eyes returned to mine.
“What?””
“You protect me by keeping me in the dark.””
The room became quiet.
Dominic slowly looked away.
Because even he knew I was right.
Everett studied me for a long moment.
Then he said:
“You’re right.””
I wasn’t expecting that.
He walked to the window.
“Your father was not only an accountant.””
I waited.
“He was also a collector.””
“A collector?””
“Information.””
The word sent a chill through me.
“He kept records.””
“About the stolen money?””
“About everyone.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel Hayes believed powerful people survived by hiding their mistakes.””
Everett looked at me.
“And he believed one day someone would try to erase him.””
My fingers touched the paper.
“Did he leave something for me?””
Everett didn’t answer.
Again.
That silence.
That unbearable silence.
“Everett.””
He closed his eyes briefly.
“There is a possibility.””
“What possibility?””
“That your father didn’t trust anyone enough to leave the evidence with the Kanes.””
I understood.
“Because he thought someone inside your family was involved.””
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“Then where did he hide it?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dominic suddenly looked at me.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“The letter.””
I looked down.
“What about it?””
“Your father wrote it twenty years ago.””
“Yes.””
“But Sterling only discovered you recently.””
I frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Dominic pointed at the paper.
“Your father knew one day you might marry Everett.””
The room went still.
I felt cold.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if he knew something about Kane family traditions.””
Everett’s face changed.
“Dominic.””
“What?””
“You’re thinking what I’m thinking?””
Dominic nodded slowly.
“Maybe.””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Everett took the letter.
“Old Kane family agreements include something called a bloodline protection clause.””
“That sounds terrifying.””
“It’s not what it sounds like.””
“What is it?””
“A legal condition created by my grandfather.””
He paused.
“If a Kane heir marries, certain family records become accessible.””
I stared.
“What records?””
Everett looked at my wedding ring.
“The family archives.””
My breath caught.
“Why?””
“Because the spouse becomes legally protected.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if someone wanted the spouse to discover the truth.””
The room became colder.
I looked at my ring.
The simple gold band suddenly felt different.
Not a symbol of a marriage.
A key.
“You’re saying Sterling didn’t force me to marry you because he wanted your company.””
Everett’s eyes met mine.
“He wanted you to unlock something.””
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone turned.
One of Everett’s guards entered.
“Mr. Kane.””
“Yes?””
“We found something in the archive room.””
Everett immediately moved.
“What?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“A hidden compartment.””
Dominic straightened.
“Where?””
“Behind the old family portrait.””
Everett froze.
“What was inside?””
The guard hesitated.
“A recording.””
My heart started beating faster.
“From who?””
The guard looked at me.
“Your father.””
The hidden room beneath the Kane estate was nothing like I expected.
I imagined some secret underground vault.
Instead, it was a small archive room filled with old boxes, documents, and photographs.
A room frozen in time.
Dust covered everything.
Except one object.
A small recording device sitting on a wooden table.
Waiting.
My father had left a message.
For me.
Everett stood beside me.
Dominic stood near the door.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
This was a moment that belonged to me.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice I had not heard in twenty years.
“Willa.””
My knees almost gave out.
“Sweetheart, if you are hearing this…”
A shaky breath.
“Something has gone terribly wrong.””
Tears blurred my vision.
My father.
It was really him.
“I don’t know how old you are when this message reaches you.””
His voice cracked.
“But I hope I am there to explain this myself.””
A pause.
“I’m sorry if I’m not.””
I covered my mouth.
Everett looked down.
Even he struggled hearing it.
“Your mother will want to protect you.””
My mother.
“She will tell you to stay away from the Kane family.””
Another pause.
“But if you are listening to this, then that means you are already close to them.””
My hands trembled.
My father continued.
“Willa, there are good people in the Kane family.””
My eyes moved to Everett.
“But there are also people who believe power gives them the right to destroy anyone who stands against them.””
Static.
Then:
“I found proof of what Sterling Kane did.””
The room froze.
Dominic looked at Everett.
Everett’s face became stone.
My father continued.
“He was not working alone.””
My breathing stopped.
“There is someone above him.””
Someone above Sterling?
Impossible.
Sterling already controlled so much.
“Someone who has been guiding him for years.””
The recording crackled.
“Someone inside the Kane family.””
Then my father said something that made Everett go completely still.
“The person who ordered my death is the same person who ordered Everett Kane’s accident.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
No one moved.
Then Everett whispered:
“No.””
It was the first time I heard fear in his voice.
Not anger.
Fear.
I turned to him.
“What?””
He stared at the device.
“My father.””
“What about him?””
“He had a brother.””
I frowned.
“Your uncle?””
Everett nodded slowly.
“Everyone thought he died twenty-five years ago.””
A chill moved through me.
“Thought?””
Everett looked toward the darkness beyond the archive room.
“Because there was never a body.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
A second later, every door in the archive room locked automatically.
Dominic reached for his weapon.
“Everyone stay still.””
A sound came from the speakers above us.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Older.
Familiar.
“Everett.””
My blood froze.
Everett stared upward.
Because he recognized the voice.
The voice said:
“You took longer to wake up than I expected.””
A pause.
“And you married my enemy’s daughter exactly as planned.””
Everett’s face went pale.
“Uncle Richard.””
The voice laughed softly.
Then the final words echoed through the dark room.
May you like
“Welcome back, nephew.””
A gunshot exploded outside.
