Chapter 6: The Night Everything Was Taken From Me

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*You should have never taken him back.*

My fingers went numb around the phone.

Not because someone had threatened me.

Because whoever sent it knew something impossible.

They knew I had taken Evan back.

They knew he was with me.

They knew the one thing I had spent nine years hiding.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

Evan watched me carefully.

He was already afraid.

I didn’t want to add another fear to the ones he carried.

“Emma,” Daniel said.

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

His face changed instantly.

The confusion disappeared.

What replaced it was something I had rarely seen from him.

Protectiveness.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“You said Marcus knows what’s happening?””

“Yes.””

“Call him.””

I grabbed my phone.

But before I could dial, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire house went dark.

Lily gasped.

“Mommy?””

I moved immediately.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

The words came out automatically.

The same words every parent says when they’re trying not to panic.

Daniel grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer.

“Stay with the kids.””

I nodded.

Evan stood frozen near the table.

The darkness seemed to make him smaller.

More like the child I imagined he had been all these years.

Alone.

Scared.

Waiting for someone to come.

I walked toward him.

“It’s okay.””

He looked at me.

“No, it’s not.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked toward the windows.

“This is what happened before.””

My heart tightened.

“What happened before?””

“When my dad died.””

The room went silent.

“Tell me.””

Evan swallowed.

“The lights went out.””

I felt a chill.

“And then?””

“He told me to hide.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was outside.””

Daniel returned from the hallway.

“There’s no one outside.””

Evan shook his head.

“There was.””

Daniel looked at me.

I could see the doubt in his eyes.

Not about Evan.

About the impossible situation we were trapped in.

“Evan,” I said gently, “what happened that night?””

The boy gripped his backpack.

“My dad was sick.””

He stared at the floor.

“He knew something was going to happen.””

“What did he do?””

“He gave me the bracelet.””

My breath caught.

“He told me if anything happened, I had to keep it.””

“Did he say why?””

Evan nodded.

“He said my mother needed to find me.””

The words nearly knocked the air out of me.

My mother.

Not a stranger.

Not someone.

Me.

“What else did he say?””

Evan’s eyes filled.

“He said he was sorry.””

My chest hurt.

“Sorry for what?””

“For not finding you sooner.””

I covered my mouth.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Thomas hadn’t abandoned Evan.

He had been trying to bring him back to me.

And I had spent nine years believing I was the only one who had lost him.

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaking.

Everyone froze.

Daniel raised the flashlight.

“Stay here.””

“No,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“I’m not leaving you.””

Those words should have comforted me.

Instead, they reminded me how much I had risked losing.

Not just my marriage.

My family.

My entire life.

Daniel moved slowly toward the stairs.

The flashlight beam crossed the hallway.

Nothing.

He walked up.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Then he stopped.

“What is it?”” I called.

He didn’t answer.

My heart started pounding.

“Daniel?””

He turned around.

His face was pale.

In his hand was an envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

The same handwriting.

My handwriting.

I walked toward him.

“Where did you find that?””

“On the floor outside our bedroom.””

I took it.

My hands shook.

“How did someone get inside?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew the answer.

Someone had been inside our house.

Recently.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

You made the same mistake twice.

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Then I saw something else.

A photograph.

A hospital photograph.

My hands froze.

It was from nine years ago.

A picture of me holding newborn Evan.

But I wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing beside my hospital bed.

Someone I had never noticed.

Someone looking directly at the camera.

Rebecca Hall.

And Marcus Vale.

Together.

My heart raced.

Why were they both there?

Why had nobody told me?

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

And a sentence.

*The child was never supposed to leave with you.*

I felt sick.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

I handed him the picture.

He stared.

“Who are they?””

“The doctor.””

“And the other man?””

“Marcus.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would Marcus be there?””

I didn’t know.

But I suddenly realized something.

Marcus had told me he tried to stop me from signing the papers.

But he had never told me why he was there.

He had never told me what his connection was.

A knock interrupted us.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from the front door.

Daniel moved in front of us.

“Who is it?””

No answer.

Another knock.

Evan grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open it.””

His fear was immediate.

“How do you know?””

“Because that’s how they did it before.””

The words sent a chill through me.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is ‘they’?””

Before I could answer, a voice came from outside.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Emma.””

I stopped breathing.

No.

It couldn’t be.

The voice spoke again.

“You know who I am.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I knew.

After nine years.

After all the questions.

After all the secrets.

The person standing outside my door was the last person I wanted to see.

Dr. Rebecca Hall.

“Emma,” she called.

“I think we need to talk.””

Daniel looked at the door.

Then at me.

“What is she doing here?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse than I imagined.

Rebecca Hall wasn’t just connected to Evan.

She was connected to the reason I lost him.

I walked closer to the door.

“Why are you here?””

A pause.

Then her voice softened.

“Because you found him.””

My hand froze on the lock.

“How do you know that?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I’ve been looking for him for nine years.””

My heart pounded.

“You were looking for him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because Evan is not the child you think he is.””

I stepped back.

Every instinct told me not to listen.

But I needed answers.

“What does that mean?””

A long pause.

Then Rebecca said:

“It means Thomas lied to you.””

I looked at Evan.

The boy who had spent his whole life carrying a bracelet.

The boy who believed his father protected him.

The boy who might have been the victim of a story nobody had told me.

“What are you saying?””

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“I’m saying the night you gave up your son…”

The lights flickered again.

“And the night Thomas took him away…”

The entire house went silent.

“They were not the same night.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Behind me, Evan whispered.

“That’s not true.””

Rebecca continued.

“Emma, open the door.””

I stared at the lock.

Because suddenly, the biggest question was no longer who was telling the truth.

It was this:

May you like

If Rebecca Hall was lying…

Why did Evan believe her?
