Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO VANISHED

The journal slipped from my hands and hit the floor with a heavy thud.
Clara. Mark’s mother.
Not Evelyn.
I sank onto an old wooden chest, staring at the photographs. The baby in the picture was unmistakably Mark. Same eyes. Same shape of face. And the woman holding him—Clara—looked nothing like Evelyn.
Evelyn had never once mentioned Clara. She had always told me she was Mark’s only mother. That she had raised him from birth. That his real mother had died when he was very small. A tragic accident.
But according to this journal… Clara had not died in an accident. She had been pushed out. Destroyed. And then she had vanished.
I picked up the journal again, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold it.
I read every word, page after page, until my eyes burned.
Clara had been Mark’s biological mother. She had married Evelyn’s husband long before Evelyn ever came into the picture. And when Evelyn entered their lives—wealthy, powerful, ruthless—she decided she wanted everything. The husband. The name. The fortune. And the child.
She systematically destroyed Clara. Isolated her. Turned everyone against her. Forged documents that stripped her of her rights. And then, one stormy night twenty-four years ago, Clara walked out of the house and was never seen again.
Her body was never found. The police called it an accidental drowning. A tragic suicide.
But Evelyn’s journal told a very different story.
*She threatened to tell everyone. To expose everything. I gave her a choice. Leave quietly and never come back. Or lose everything. She chose to fight. So I made certain she could not fight anymore.*
The words were written calmly. Coldly. As if Evelyn were writing about weather or dinner.
*She will not return. No one will ever know what truly happened that night. And the boy will be mine. He will grow up believing I am his mother. He will love me. He will obey me. And one day, he will do exactly as I say.*
I closed the journal. My stomach churned.
Evelyn had stolen Mark. She had stolen his life. His identity. His entire history. And she had raised him to be exactly like her—obedient, cold, willing to do whatever she ordered.
And now she was doing the exact same thing to me. To Lily.
She had forged my signature. She had prepared false documents. She was sending Mark to kick me out, to take my daughter, to erase me from Lily’s life—just as she had erased Clara.
The pattern was identical.
But then… who was the person sending me the messages? Who knew enough about what happened to Clara to warn me?
I looked deeper into the filing cabinet. Beneath the journal, I found a single letter. Handwritten. Tucked inside an envelope without a stamp.
Dated six months ago.
*I know what you did. I have kept quiet for twenty-four years. But I cannot watch you do it again. Not to another mother. Not to an innocent child. What you are planning to do to Ava is wrong. Stop it. Or I will tell the truth.*
The handwriting was not Evelyn’s.
May you like
And at the bottom, in the same handwriting, was a single name.
*Clara.*
