Chapter 16 - THE WITNESS

While the police searched for Ryan, we pushed forward with Diane’s case. She had kept records—detailed, handwritten journals in which she had recorded every step of the plan, every meeting, every bribe, every lie. She had written them, she told investigators, because she had always feared Ryan might turn on her, or that something might go wrong, and she intended to hold leverage over everyone involved. Those journals became the strongest evidence we had. They confirmed the switch, the forgery, the plot to steal Noah’s inheritance, and Ryan’s full knowledge of everything that had happened.

But there was one passage that stopped me cold. Dated six months earlier, long before I had discovered anything:

*Ryan hesitates. He has grown attached to the boy. He speaks of telling Emily the truth, of walking away before it is too late. I have reminded him of what is at stake. If he speaks, we lose everything. Worse—there are men who will not care about the law. They care only about the money. If we fail, they may take matters into their own hands. Ryan understands now. Silence is his only protection.*

Men. Plural. Not just Diane. Not just Ryan. There were others. People they owed. People waiting for the payout.

I took the journal to Margaret and Julian immediately.

“This changes everything,” Julian said, his face hard. “Diane and Ryan were not working alone. They borrowed money. Invested it. Promised a return once the inheritance became accessible. If those lenders believe they have been cheated… they will come for what they are owed.”

“Through Ryan,” I said, my heart sinking. “Or through Noah.”

We went back to Diane. Faced with the journal entry and the threat to my son, she finally admitted the rest. She and Ryan had partnered with a private investment group—shadowy, aggressive people who had provided the funds needed to bribe hospital staff, forge records, and arrange the legal filings. In exchange, they were promised a substantial share of Noah’s inheritance once the six-year deadline passed and the fortune was accessed.

“They do not care who is right or wrong,” Diane said, her voice tight with fear. “They care about being paid. If Ryan is gone… they will look for the asset. They will look for Noah.”
