Chapter 6: The Files She Thought No One Would Find
The first thing Adrian heard was Caleb’s voice.
Small.
Confused.
Afraid.
The recording showed a different room.
Not the backyard.
Not the living room.
A corner of the house he rarely entered.
The storage room beside the garage.
The timestamp appeared at the bottom of the screen.
*March 12 — 6:32 PM*
Adrian leaned closer.
His heart was already warning him.
He pressed play.
The camera angle was hidden high in the corner, facing the room.
Caleb stood near a shelf, holding a toy car.
Vanessa stood in front of him.
Her back was toward the camera.
“Tell me why you’re here.””
Caleb looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You always say sorry.””
The boy squeezed the toy car.
“I didn’t do anything.””
Vanessa turned.
Even through the blurry recording, Adrian could see her expression.
Cold.
Controlled.
Not the face she showed everyone else.
“Are you calling me a liar?””
Caleb immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why are you arguing?””
“I’m not.””
“Caleb.””
The boy flinched.
Adrian stopped the video.
He couldn’t watch another second.
Not because he didn’t want the truth.
Because he already knew enough.
His son had been living in fear inside his own home.
He looked at the laptop screen.
The folder contained dozens of videos.
Dozens.
Not one mistake.
Not one bad day.
A collection.
A record.
Vanessa had been documenting it.
For some reason, she had been keeping evidence against herself.
Adrian clicked another file.
*April 8 — Responsibility Training*
The title alone made him sick.
He opened it.
This time, Caleb was sitting at the kitchen table.
A plate of food sat in front of him.
Vanessa stood nearby.
“Why aren’t you eating?””
“I’m not hungry.””
“You don’t decide that.””
“I don’t feel good.””
“Excuses.””
Caleb touched his stomach.
“It hurts.””
Vanessa leaned down.
“Do you know what happens when children don’t appreciate what they have?””
Caleb shook his head.
“They lose privileges.””
“I’m sorry.””
Again.
That word.
Again.
Adrian closed his eyes.
His son apologized constantly because someone had taught him that existing was something he needed to apologize for.
A sound behind him made him turn.
Caleb stood in the hallway.
Holding his stuffed bear.
Adrian immediately closed the laptop.
“Buddy.””
The little boy looked at the screen.
“Were you watching those?””
Adrian hesitated.
He didn’t want to lie.
“Yes.””
Caleb’s face changed.
Fear.
Not curiosity.
Fear.
“Is Vanessa mad?””
Adrian stood and walked toward him.
“No.””
“But she said I wasn’t supposed to tell.””
Adrian knelt down.
“Tell me what?””
The boy looked at the floor.
“About the videos.””
Adrian froze.
“She told you about the videos?””
Caleb nodded.
“She said they were to show Daddy what kind of kid I was.””
Adrian felt anger rise again.
But he pushed it down.
He needed Caleb to feel safe.
“Did she ever show me one?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Caleb shrugged.
“She said you would get upset.””
Adrian looked toward the laptop.
The hidden recordings.
The secret folder.
The proof Vanessa had created herself.
“Caleb.””
The boy looked up.
“You’re not in trouble.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Adrian gently held his shoulders.
“I need you to really know.””
The boy stared at him.
“You’re not the reason people are upset.””
A small tear rolled down Caleb’s cheek.
“I tried to be good.””
Adrian’s heart broke.
“I know you did.””
“I tried really hard.””
“I know.””
“Was it enough?””
Adrian pulled him into a hug.
“Yes.””
His voice cracked.
“You were always enough.””
The next morning, Adrian made the decision.
He called his attorney.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Not because he wanted to destroy Vanessa.
Because he needed to protect Caleb.
The attorney, Daniel Brooks, listened quietly while Adrian explained everything.
The footage.
The messages.
The recordings.
When Adrian finished, Daniel asked one question.
“Are the files still on the original device?””
“Yes.””
“Don’t change anything.””
“I won’t.””
“Do not delete, edit, or move them.””
“Okay.””
Daniel paused.
“Adrian, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Documentation matters.””
Adrian looked at the laptop.
“I know.””
“No. I mean everything matters. The dates.
The original files. The way they were created.””
A silence followed.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did Vanessa know the cameras existed?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know the files were saved?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s voice became serious.
“Find out.””
When Vanessa came home that afternoon, she seemed different.
Calmer.
Almost too calm.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“You found something.””
She placed her purse on the table.
“I found out you’ve been talking to people about me.””
Adrian didn’t respond.
“You called a lawyer.””
Still nothing.
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“So that’s how this is going to be?””
Adrian looked at her.
“How what is going to be?””
“You and everyone else against me.””
“No.””
His voice was steady.
“This is about Caleb.””
“Everything is always about Caleb.””
The sentence hung in the air.
Adrian stared at her.
Because she said it like it was a problem.
Like loving his son was an unfair advantage.
Vanessa walked closer.
“You think you’re protecting him.””
“I am.””
“You’re teaching him that whenever something is difficult, he can run to Daddy.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I’m teaching him that when he’s scared, someone will listen.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“That’s your problem.””
“What?””
“You think love fixes everything.””
Adrian looked at her.
“And you think fear does.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
She looked toward the hallway.
“Where is Caleb?””
“With me.””
“He needs school tomorrow.””
“I’ll handle it.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You can’t just take him away.””
Adrian stayed silent.
That silence bothered her.
Because she realized he wasn’t asking permission anymore.
“You’re serious.””
“Yes.””
“You’re ending this marriage over a misunderstanding?””
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m questioning a marriage because of what my son experienced.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“Maybe.””
He picked up the laptop.
“But I know what I saw.””
For the first time, panic appeared in her eyes.
“You watched them?””
Adrian stopped.
There it was.
Not denial.
Confirmation.
He turned slowly.
“The recordings.””
Vanessa went still.
“You knew about them.””
She didn’t answer.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“How long?””
“What?””
“How long have you been recording him?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That he was difficult.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You created evidence to prove a five-year-old was the problem.””
“He needed correction.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“He needed a mother who loved him.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You think you know everything.””
“No.””
He held up the laptop.
“But I know enough.””
That night, Adrian reviewed the files again.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he needed to understand.
There were recordings from months before.
Some were harmless.
Others showed a pattern.
Caleb crying.
Caleb apologizing.
Caleb trying to explain.
Vanessa correcting.
Controlling.
Punishing.
But then he found something different.
A file from the week before.
No title.
No description.
Just a date.
He opened it.
The camera angle was from the hallway.
Caleb was walking toward his room.
Vanessa followed behind.
The audio was quiet.
But then Adrian heard something.
Something that made him sit upright.
Vanessa’s voice.
“If you tell your father, things will get worse.””
Caleb stopped walking.
“Why?””
“Because nobody likes children who cause problems.””
“I don’t want problems.””
“Then be quiet.””
Adrian’s hands shook.
He watched as Caleb entered his room.
Then the video continued.
Vanessa stayed outside the door.
And whispered something Adrian almost missed.
Something he replayed three times.
Because he couldn’t believe what he heard.
“Your father always chooses you now.””
A pause.
Then:
“Soon he won’t.””
The video ended.
Adrian sat frozen.
Then his phone rang.
Daniel.
Adrian answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
The attorney’s voice was urgent.
“Adrian, I need you to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“I checked the file information you sent.””
“And?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“The recordings weren’t created by accident.””
Adrian looked at the laptop.
“What do you mean?””
“They were organized.””
“How?””
“By date.””
“Okay.””
“And by subject.””
Adrian frowned.
“Subject?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Adrian…”
“What?””
“There’s a folder you haven’t mentioned.””
Adrian looked back at the laptop.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
Daniel continued:
“The folder is hidden.””
A chill moved through him.
“What’s inside?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Adrian, the folder is named after you.””
Adrian slowly moved the mouse.
The hidden files appeared.
One folder.
One name.
*ADRIAN — OBSERVATIONS*
He opened it.
And the first document inside wasn’t about Caleb.
It wasn’t about Vanessa.
It was a detailed record of Adrian’s behavior.
His schedule.
His conversations.
His habits.
May you like
And at the top of the page was a sentence that made his blood turn cold:
*Plan: Remove Adrian’s influence before Caleb becomes too attached.*
