Chapter 6: The Ally I Never Questioned

The voice came from behind me.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost amused.

“Margaret, you’re finally asking the right questions.””

I turned slowly.

And for a moment, I wished I had been wrong.

Daniel stood near the fireplace.

The same Daniel who had defended me.

The same Daniel who had uncovered Rachel’s lies.

The same Daniel who had spent the entire night standing beside the truth.

The man I had trusted for twenty-two years.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel looked at him.

Then at me.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You,” she whispered.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward her.

“Be careful, Rachel.””

The warning was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Richard stood.

“What is going on?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

“I suppose this is the moment where you tell everyone you suspected me.””

I studied his face.

“I did.””

The room reacted immediately.

Emily looked at me.

“Grandma…”

I raised a hand.

“Not now.””

Daniel gave a small nod.

“That’s why you are difficult to fool.””

The words sounded like a compliment.

They weren’t.

I looked at the man who had handled my family’s secrets, my business affairs, and my legal documents for decades.

“How long?””

Daniel’s expression remained calm.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been involved?””

A silence followed.

A normal person would have denied it immediately.

They would have been offended.

They would have raised their voice.

Daniel did none of those things.

That was what frightened me.

“I think,” he said slowly, “the better question is when did you stop trusting me?””

I looked at him.

“When I realized you always arrived exactly when I needed you.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You noticed.””

“Yes.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Of course she noticed.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“You really thought you were the only person she was watching?””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You should be quiet.””

“No.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Not anymore.””

Her anger was different now.

Before, she was fighting to protect herself.

Now, she was fighting because she had realized she was not the biggest player in the room.

“You used me,” Rachel said.

Daniel looked at her.

“You were useful.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

Rachel’s face changed.

“You knew?””

Thomas looked between them.

“Knew what?””

Rachel ignored him.

“You knew everything I was doing.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Thomas took a step back.

“You two were working together?””

Daniel finally looked at him.

“Not exactly.””

Thomas laughed.

“Not exactly?””

His voice rose.

“You let us destroy ourselves while you watched?””

Daniel remained calm.

“I let people reveal who they were.””

I stared at him.

“That sounds familiar.””

His eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

The answer disturbed me more than a denial would have.

Because Daniel had always understood me.

He knew how I thought.

He knew my methods.

And he had used that knowledge against me.

Emily moved closer to me.

“Grandma, what is happening?””

I looked at her.

“I’m not sure yet.””

Daniel walked toward the table.

“Actually, you are.””

He picked up the forged estate document.

“You figured it out weeks ago.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“You knew Rachel was searching for control of the estate.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Thomas was desperate for money.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone had access to the legal records.””

“Yes.””

Daniel placed the document down.

“But you never considered the person protecting those records.””

The room went cold.

Because everyone understood.

The person who guards a door also knows how to open it.

Richard stared at Daniel.

“You changed the records.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

The confession was simple.

No hesitation.

No excuse.

James looked shocked.

“Why?””

Daniel glanced at the family.

“Because the Ashford estate was already collapsing.””

I almost laughed.

“Collapsing?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“You built something impressive, Margaret. But you refused to accept that time changes everything.””

My expression hardened.

“Do not pretend this was about helping me.””

Daniel was quiet.

Because he knew I was right.

“This was about control.””

“Yes.””

His honesty was almost worse.

Daniel walked slowly around the room.

“Do you know what happens when powerful people refuse to step aside?””

Nobody answered.

“They become surrounded by people waiting for them to fail.””

He looked at Rachel.

“She wanted money.””

He looked at Thomas.

“He wanted status.””

Then he looked at me.

“But you…”

A pause.

“You wanted to believe loyalty still existed.””

The words hurt because they were close to the truth.

Close.

Not completely.

“You’re wrong,” I said.

Daniel looked surprised.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

I placed my hand on the armrest of my wheelchair.

“I never believed loyalty was automatic.””

The room became quiet.

“I believed it had to be earned every day.””

Daniel stared at me.

“And you believed you had earned mine.””

“Yes.””

For the first time that night, something changed in his expression.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

Rachel pointed at him.

“You sent the message.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The family reacted.

“The message?”” Emily asked.

“The one saying I was looking in the wrong direction,” I answered.

Rachel laughed.

“So you wanted her to know?””

Daniel nodded.

“I wanted to see what she would do.””

I looked at him.

“You were testing me.””

“Yes.””

“And if I failed?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That answer was enough.

Thomas moved toward him.

“You almost got Margaret killed.””

Daniel’s face changed slightly.

“I didn’t push her.””

“No.””

Thomas’s voice was filled with anger.

“But you knew we were planning something.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You planned an accident.””

Thomas went silent.

“You created the situation.””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You’re blaming us?””

“I’m stating facts.””

Rachel laughed.

“You are unbelievable.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Margaret, the truth is that I never wanted you harmed.””

I looked at him.

“Then what did you want?””

A long pause.

Then:

“The estate.””

The room became silent.

Not the kind of silence caused by shock.

The kind caused by understanding.

Daniel continued.

“You spent your life protecting this place. But you never prepared it for what came after you.””

“That was my decision.””

“Yes.””

His voice softened.

“And that was the problem.””

I watched him carefully.

“You believe you deserved it.””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, he seemed less like a lawyer.

More like a man who had spent years convincing himself of something.

“I spent decades building this family’s legal foundation.””

“And I paid you.””

“Yes.””

“You were not my partner.””

The words landed.

Daniel looked back at me.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were my employee.””

Nobody expected me to say it.

Especially not him.

His expression hardened.

“And that is exactly why you lost everything.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood beside me.

Not behind me.

Beside me.

“You’re all talking about money and power like people don’t matter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re young.””

“Yes.””

She didn’t back away.

“But I know betrayal when I see it.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And this time…

He looked surprised.

A real reaction.

A message had arrived.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?”” Rachel asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

I noticed his hand tighten around the phone.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Slowly, he turned the screen toward us.

A message appeared.

Not from an unknown number.

From a saved contact.

A contact that belonged to Daniel himself.

The message read:

*You were never the one in control. You were only another piece on the board.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

And for the first time that night…

The person who had manipulated everyone looked afraid.

Because someone had been manipulating him.

I looked around the room.

Rachel.

Thomas.

Daniel.

All the people who thought they understood the game.

They were wrong.

Because they had all been looking at the estate.

The money.

The documents.

The power.

But none of them had asked the most important question.

Who started the game?

And as Daniel slowly lowered his phone, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The person behind everything was still inside the mansion.

And they had been close enough to watch us all along.
