Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Carried
The sentence stayed in my mind long after the paper fell from my hands.
*“If anything happens to me, don’t trust Daniel.””*
My father’s name.
Written by my mother.
The person who tucked me into bed.
The person who held my hand at the hospital after Mom died.
The person who told me we would always be a family.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It felt like the entire house was waiting for my father to explain something.
Anything.
But he didn’t.
He just stared at the paper.
Like he had never seen those words before.
Like they had hurt him too.
“Maya,” he whispered.
I stepped back.
I hated that I did.
I hated that my body moved away from him before my mind could decide.
His face changed.
He noticed.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
“Why would Mom write this?”” I asked.
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
Dad opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa looked at him carefully.
“Daniel?””
He looked at her.
“Don’t.””
The single word was sharp.
For the first time, I saw fear in my father’s eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
“I don’t know what this is,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
The moment the words left my mouth, I wished I could take them back.
Not because I knew he was innocent.
Because I had never spoken to him like that before.
But I had never been in a moment like this before.
My father sat down slowly.
He looked older than he had that morning.
“I loved your mother.””
I didn’t answer.
“I loved her more than anything.””
“Then why did she write that?””
He looked at the paper again.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That’s what everyone says when they don’t want to admit something.””
Dad turned toward her.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“I’m not judging you. I’m telling Maya what your wife believed.””
Dad stood up.
“And you knew this for years?””
The room went silent.
Vanessa didn’t look away.
“Yes.””
My father’s expression broke.
“How long?””
“Since before you married me.””
He stared at her.
“You knew my wife was afraid of me?””
“No.””
“Then what did you know?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“That she was afraid of someone.””
“Someone.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Dad shook his head.
“You’re telling me you kept this secret for years, let me raise my daughter without knowing, and now you’re saying you don’t know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of making things worse.””
I watched them argue.
Two adults who both seemed to be holding pieces of a puzzle.
And somehow, I was the person standing in the middle of it.
The child everyone kept trying to protect.
But nobody had thought to tell the truth to.
I looked at the journal.
“Can I read it?””
Both of them turned toward me.
Dad immediately shook his head.
“Maya, maybe not.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s complicated.””
I looked at him.
“Everything about my life is complicated now.””
He went quiet.
“I deserve to know what my mom wrote.””
That was the first time nobody argued.
Dad handed me the journal.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The pages smelled old.
Like paper that had been hidden away too long.
My mother’s handwriting filled every page.
Beautiful.
Careful.
The handwriting of someone who believed she still had time.
I read the first entry.
*March 14*
*Something feels wrong. I don’t know if I’m being paranoid, but I can’t ignore this feeling anymore.*
I swallowed.
I turned the page.
*Daniel says I’m imagining things. He says I’m stressed because of Maya and work. Maybe he’s right. But I know what I saw.*
My heart started beating faster.
“What did she see?”” I whispered.
Dad looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
I continued.
*I found the papers hidden in his office. Documents about Maya. Documents about custody.*
I looked up.
Dad looked shocked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“What papers?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked back at the journal.
*He says he was only preparing for the worst. He says every parent should protect themselves. But why would he need papers that could take Maya away from me?*
The room became silent.
My fingers tightened around the journal.
“Dad…”
He rubbed his face.
“I can explain.””
I closed the journal.
“Then explain.””
He looked at me.
“When your mother and I were having problems—”
“Problems?””
He stopped.
“Yes.””
I waited.
“What problems?””
He sat down again.
“Your mother and I were arguing a lot before she died.””
I felt my chest tighten.
I had never known that.
To me, my parents had always been happy.
Even after Mom got sick.
Even after everything changed.
“You never told me.””
“You were eight.””
“I’m eight now.””
He looked away.
“That’s different.””
“No, Dad.””
My voice shook.
“That’s exactly the problem.””
He looked at me.
“I keep finding out things about my own family from other people.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, he continued.
“Your mother thought I was trying to leave her.””
“Were you?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I was angry. I was scared. But I never wanted to leave you.””
“Then why were there custody papers?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Mom?””
“No.””
He took a deep breath.
“Of losing you.””
I didn’t understand.
“You thought Mom would take me?””
He shook his head.
“Your mother was sick. She was struggling. I was scared something would happen and I would have no way to protect you.””
I looked at the journal.
“But Mom thought you were trying to take me away.””
His face fell.
“I never wanted her to think that.””
“But she did.””
He had no answer.
Because she had.
The next few pages were harder to read.
My mother wrote about arguments.
About fear.
About feeling alone.
But then something changed.
A name appeared again.
Marcus Hale.
*March 27*
*Marcus called again. He says he found something about Daniel. I don’t want to believe him. I don’t want my daughter growing up thinking her father is dangerous.*
I stopped.
Dad noticed.
“What?””
I turned the journal around.
He read the entry.
His face changed.
“Marcus lied to her.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he hated me.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Why?””
Dad looked at her.
“You know why.””
“No, I don’t.””
He laughed bitterly.
“You knew him before me.””
Vanessa went quiet.
“Tell me.””
Dad looked at the floor.
“Marcus blamed me for your mother leaving him behind.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Your mother chose Daniel.””
The room froze.
“She left Marcus?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“And nobody told me?””
Nobody responded.
I looked at my father.
“Was Mom happy with you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But certain.
“She loved you,” he said.
I looked down.
The journal slipped slightly in my hands.
Then I found another entry.
One that changed everything.
*April 2*
**I found out Daniel was right about one thing. Someone has been lying. But it isn’t Marcus.
It isn’t Daniel. The truth is much closer than I thought.**
I stopped reading.
“What does that mean?””
Dad leaned forward.
I turned the page.
The next section was ripped out.
A whole page missing.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You removed this.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Someone did.””
Dad grabbed the journal.
He flipped through the pages.
The missing section was obvious.
A piece of the truth had been taken away.
Then something fell from the back cover.
A small photograph.
I picked it up.
It was a picture of my mother.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was a young woman.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone I had seen every day for years.
My fingers went cold.
Because the person standing beside my mother wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t my father.
It was Vanessa.
And written on the back of the photograph were five words:
*“She knows what happened.””*
I looked up.
Vanessa was staring at the picture.
May you like
And for the first time…
She looked completely terrified.
