Chapter 7: The Room Where The Truth Was Hidden

“Mia!””

Claire’s voice echoed through the empty auditorium.

She didn’t remember moving.

One second she was standing beside the stage.

The next, she was running.

Her shoes hit the floor hard as she pushed past chairs and decorations, searching every corner.

“Mia!””

Nothing.

Only silence.

The kind of silence that made every parent’s worst fear come alive.

Claire’s hands shook as she grabbed Principal Dawson’s arm.

“What do you mean she’s missing?””

He looked devastated.

“Mrs. Harper said Mia needed some air after everything that happened. She took her to the hallway near the music rooms.””

“And then?””

“She received a phone call.””

Claire’s face changed.

“A phone call?””

Principal Dawson nodded.

“When she turned around, Mia was gone.””

Claire felt her stomach drop.

“No.””

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

“Was anyone else there?””

A teacher answered quietly.

“The security cameras near the old music wing are being checked.””

Claire looked toward the stage speakers.

The microphone was still on.

The same microphone that had exposed Vanessa.

The same microphone that had revealed secrets nobody wanted heard.

And now…

It had captured Vanessa talking to Mia.

Claire turned slowly.

Vanessa was standing near the back of the auditorium.

Everyone was looking at her.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Claire walked toward her.

“You were talking to my daughter.””

“I was trying to help.””

“Help?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“You were asking her about her father.””

Vanessa looked away.

“That’s not what happened.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“We all heard you.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved around the room.

For once, she had nowhere to hide.

“I just needed answers.””

Claire stared at her.

“You scared a seven-year-old girl because you needed answers?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Claire said.

“I understand exactly.””

She pointed toward the stage.

“You hurt Mia because you wanted something from her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was weaker now.

Claire noticed.

“You know where she is.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Principal Dawson immediately stepped forward.

“Where is Mia?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“Then why were you speaking with her?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

Claire’s anger turned into something colder.

Fear.

Because every second mattered.

“Mia is a child,” Claire said.

“You don’t get to play games with her.””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for a moment, Claire thought she saw guilt.

But then it disappeared.

“I never wanted this.””

Claire frowned.

“Wanted what?””

Vanessa looked toward the empty stage.

“The truth coming out.””

Before anyone could ask another question, a teacher rushed into the auditorium.

“Principal Dawson!””

Everyone turned.

“We checked the cameras.””

Claire ran toward him.

“Where is she?””

The teacher swallowed.

“She went into the old music wing.””

Rachel frowned.

“The old wing is closed.””

The teacher nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire looked confused.

“Why would she go there?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because that’s where he hid it.””

Claire turned.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Your husband.””

The words made the room go still.

Principal Dawson looked toward the hallway.

“The old music wing?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“That’s where everything started.””

Claire stared at her.

“You’re coming with us.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Claire’s voice was firm.

“You know something. You’re going to help us find my daughter.””

For once, Vanessa didn’t argue.

She simply followed.

The group moved quickly through the school corridors.

The celebration decorations became distant behind them.

The bright colors and happy signs felt almost cruel now.

Because somewhere inside this building was a little girl who had already been through too much.

They reached the old music wing.

The door was covered with a faded sign.

*STAFF ONLY.*

The hallway beyond was dark.

The lights flickered as Principal Dawson unlocked it.

Nobody spoke.

Claire walked first.

Not because she wasn’t afraid.

Because she was.

But because her daughter needed her.

“Mia!””

Her voice echoed.

No answer.

They searched the first room.

Empty.

The second.

Empty.

Then Rachel stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed toward the floor.

A small pink ribbon was lying near the doorway.

Claire immediately recognized it.

“Mia’s.””

She picked it up.

Her hands trembled.

“She had this on her dress.””

Vanessa looked at the ribbon.

Her face changed.

“She was here.””

Claire looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked deeper into the hallway.

At the end was an old storage room.

The door was slightly open.

Principal Dawson frowned.

“That room has been locked for years.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Not anymore.””

Claire pushed the door open.

Inside were old instruments.

Boxes of papers.

Broken music stands.

And on the wall…

A photograph.

Claire stopped.

Because she recognized it.

Her husband.

Standing in this exact room.

Years ago.

Beside Vanessa.

Her breath caught.

“You knew him.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

“More than you told me.””

“Yes.””

Claire turned toward her.

“How?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“He was investigating something.””

Rachel looked confused.

“Investigating what?””

Vanessa walked toward an old cabinet.

“He believed someone at the school was targeting children.””

Claire stared.

“And you helped him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“At first.””

The words mattered.

At first.

Claire noticed.

“What changed?””

Vanessa’s hand stopped on the cabinet handle.

“I got scared.””

The room became quiet.

“Of what?””

Vanessa slowly opened the cabinet.

Inside were old folders.

Hidden beneath a pile of music sheets.

Claire stepped closer.

“What are those?””

Vanessa pulled out a folder.

“Records.””

Principal Dawson took it.

He opened the first page.

His face changed.

“These are complaints.””

Rachel looked closer.

“About Vanessa?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Claire.

“About the person who was controlling everything.””

Claire frowned.

“What person?””

Before Vanessa could answer, a small voice came from behind them.

“Mommy?””

Claire turned so quickly her knees almost gave out.

“Mia!””

Her daughter was standing near the back corner of the room.

Safe.

But frightened.

Claire ran to her.

She dropped down and hugged her tightly.

“Oh my baby.””

Mia held onto her mother.

“I’m sorry.””

Claire pulled back.

“Sorry? For what?””

Mia looked at Vanessa.

“I thought she knew where the second letter was.””

Claire froze.

“What second letter?””

Mia reached into her pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

The same kind of paper from the notebook.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked shocked.

“Mia…”

The little girl looked confused.

“Daddy told me.””

Claire stopped breathing.

“What?””

Mia looked down at the paper.

“He told me before he left.””

The room went silent.

Rachel whispered:

“Before he died?””

Mia nodded.

“He said if Mommy ever needed help, I should give her this.””

Claire’s hands trembled as she took the paper.

She unfolded it.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her husband’s.

But this time, the message was shorter.

Only one sentence.

*Claire, if Vanessa is asking about this letter, it means she never told you the truth.*

Claire looked up slowly.

Everyone was silent.

Even Vanessa.

Then Claire read the next line.

And her heart stopped.

*The person Vanessa is protecting is not me.*

She turned the page.

There was a name.

A name that made Vanessa step backward.

A name that explained why she had been so desperate.

A name that connected every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

Claire whispered:

“No…”

Because the name written there was someone she trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside her the entire night.

May you like

Someone who had been helping her search for the truth.

And that person was not Vanessa.
