Chapter 6: The Deal Behind the Betrayal
The name stayed in the air long after Marcus said it.
Vivian’s father.
Not just some wealthy man.
Not just an influential businessman.
The man who had been trying to buy Marcus’s company.
The man who had quietly appeared in Marcus’s life at the exact moment my husband started changing.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Vivian.
Then back at Marcus.
And suddenly every confusing piece of the last year began moving into place.
The late nights.
The secret meetings.
The sudden business trips.
The way Marcus stopped talking about his company problems with me.
The way he started saying things like, “You wouldn’t understand.””
I had thought he was shutting me out because he was stressed.
But maybe he was shutting me out because he was building a future where I didn’t exist.
“What deal did you make with him?”” I asked.
Marcus’s face hardened.
“There was no deal.””
I almost smiled.
It was strange how quickly I recognized that answer now.
Not because it was true.
Because it was exactly what he said when he had something to hide.
“No deal?””
I held up my phone.
“Your mistress’s father paid for a secret paternity test on our child.””
My voice shook.
“And you expect me to believe there was no deal?””
Vivian stepped forward.
“Don’t call me that.””
I looked at her.
“What should I call you?””
Her expression tightened.
“I was not the reason your marriage fell apart.””
I stared at her.
“No?””
“No.””
She pointed toward Marcus.
“Ask him why he came to me.””
Marcus immediately said, “Vivian, stop.””
But she ignored him.
“Ask him why he told me he felt trapped.””
My heart tightened.
I turned slowly toward Marcus.
“Did you say that?””
Silence.
“Marcus.””
He looked away.
And again.
That was enough.
I laughed softly.
“You really did.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emma, our marriage was complicated.””
I stared at him.
“Complicated?””
“Yes.””
“Seven years together is complicated?””
“No.””
“Building a family is complicated?””
“No.””
“Fighting through infertility is complicated?””
His eyes lowered.
I nodded.
“Then what was complicated?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the answer was something he didn’t want to say.
He wanted the comfort of being the victim without admitting he created the damage.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“Tell her everything.””
His jaw tightened.
“Mom, this is my marriage.””
“No.””
Her voice was cold.
“This stopped being only your marriage when you involved your child, your family trust, and another family’s money.””
The words hit him.
Marcus looked defeated.
For the first time, I saw something close to regret.
But I didn’t know if I could trust it anymore.
“I met Vivian through a business meeting,” he said.
I listened.
“Her father, Richard Cross, was interested in investing in my company.””
Of course.
Richard Cross.
The name I had heard many times.
The billionaire investor.
The man whose companies appeared in every business magazine.
Marcus continued.
“At first, it was just business.””
Vivian looked down.
A tiny sign of guilt.
“Then things changed.””
“How?””
My voice was quiet.
Marcus hesitated.
“I was struggling.””
I almost laughed.
“You were struggling?””
“Yes.””
“Do you remember who was there?””
His eyes met mine.
I didn’t need to say it.
He knew.
“You.””
I nodded.
“Exactly.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“When your company was failing, I was the one who stayed awake with you.””
His face tightened.
“When you couldn’t afford office rent, I covered expenses.””
“I know.””
“When investors rejected you, I told you they were wrong.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me why the person you ran to when things got difficult wasn’t me.””
Silence.
That question hurt him.
Good.
Because I needed him to feel something.
Not guilt for being caught.
The pain of what he chose.
“I don’t know,” he whispered.
And somehow that was worse.
Because he didn’t even have an answer.
Vivian crossed her arms.
“He felt like you only saw him as a father and a provider.””
I looked at her.
“You really believe you know my husband better than I do?””
She didn’t respond.
I continued.
“You knew him during his weakest moment.””
I pointed between them.
“You met the version of him who wanted someone to admire him.””
Marcus looked hurt.
But I continued.
“I knew the version who had nothing.””
The room went quiet.
Because that was the difference.
Vivian knew his success.
I knew his struggle.
And he still chose her.
Evelyn looked at the folder.
“There is something everyone needs to understand.””
She removed another document.
“Richard Cross was not just helping Marcus’s company.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Mom.””
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“He was positioning himself to control it.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“His investment came with conditions.””
“What conditions?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Voting control.””
I stared at him.
“So he wanted your company.””
“Yes.””
“And you agreed?””
“I didn’t have a choice.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“There is always a choice.””
He looked at me.
“Not when you’re about to lose everything.””
I felt anger rise.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s the excuse you keep using.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You had choices.””
I pointed at Vivian.
“You chose her.””
Then at the documents.
“You chose secret agreements.””
Then at my stomach.
“You chose to question our baby.””
My eyes met his.
“You had choices.””
Marcus looked away.
Evelyn sighed.
“Richard Cross knew about the trust.””
My attention shifted.
“What?””
She nodded.
“That was the leverage.””
The room became still.
“He knew Marcus would lose access to family assets if he left Emma before the baby was born.””
I felt cold.
“So he used it.””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“Control.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
Because he couldn’t.
I turned toward Vivian.
“Your father wanted my husband’s company.””
She didn’t answer.
“And you wanted my husband.””
Her expression changed.
“I loved him.””
I studied her face.
Maybe she believed that.
Maybe that was the most dangerous part.
People could convince themselves of anything when they wanted something badly enough.
“You loved him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you help him destroy his family?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For once.
Nothing.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
I stared at the screen.
This time, there was a photo attached.
My blood ran cold.
It was a picture of Marcus and Vivian.
Not at a restaurant.
Not at a hotel.
Not somewhere they could claim was business.
It was taken outside a courthouse.
The date was visible.
Almost a year earlier.
Before I was pregnant.
Before I knew anything.
The message underneath said:
*He didn’t meet Vivian when you think. Ask him about the day he filed paperwork without telling you.*
I looked up.
“Marcus.””
His face changed.
“What?””
I turned the phone toward him.
“What paperwork?””
Nobody spoke.
Vivian’s expression disappeared.
Evelyn looked confused.
But Marcus?
Marcus looked terrified.
“What paperwork?”” I repeated.
He took a step back.
“Emma…”
My heart started pounding.
Because I had seen that expression before.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Fear.
The fear of someone whose biggest secret had just been discovered.
“You went to the courthouse.””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
I looked at the photo.
“Yes, you did.””
Marcus swallowed.
“I can explain.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“I’m done hearing explanations after the damage is done.””
I walked closer.
“What did you file?””
He looked at me.
And then, slowly, his eyes moved toward my stomach.
The same place he had looked when he first told me things had changed.
The same place he looked when he said he wanted certainty.
And that was when I realized.
Whatever he filed…
was connected to my baby.
Marcus finally whispered:
“I filed for emergency guardianship.””
The world went silent.
I stared at him.
“Before our baby was born?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
May you like
Because the man I married had been preparing to take my child away from me…
long before I ever knew I was fighting for custody.
