Chapter 7: The Mother-In-Law’s Hidden File
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Daniel’s words stayed in my head.
*She never wanted you to be Lily’s mother.*
I looked at my own house.
The place where Lily took her first steps.
The place where Noah built blanket forts in the living room.
The place where Daniel and I had painted the nursery at two in the morning because neither of us knew what we were doing.
A home.
My home.
And Diane had been quietly building a case against me inside it.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“I’m here.””
“What exactly did she collect?””
There was a pause.
A long one.
The kind of pause that made me realize he had been carrying this for a long time.
“Claire…”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Tell me.””
“I found out about the file six months ago.””
My heart sank.
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The anger came instantly.
“Protect me?””
My voice rose.
“You let me leave my children with her.””
“I know.””
“You let me thank her.””
“I know.””
“You let me think she was helping us.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I know, Claire.””
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I wanted to scream.
I wanted to throw the phone.
Because fear wasn’t enough anymore.
Everyone kept telling me they were protecting me.
Diane.
Rachel.
Daniel.
But somehow, I was always the last person to know the truth.
“What file?”” I asked.
Daniel exhaled.
“My mother has a folder.””
“A folder?””
“Yes.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
The word made my stomach twist.
“What’s inside?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“You’re telling me she has a file about me and you don’t know everything?””
“I only saw parts of it.””
“Then tell me what you saw.””
Silence.
Then:
“Notes.””
I frowned.
“Notes?””
“About you.””
I felt cold.
“What kind of notes?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Things you said. Things you did. Times you cried. Times you were tired.””
I stared at nothing.
“She was documenting me being a normal human being?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she was trying to create a pattern.””
The word made my skin crawl.
“A pattern of what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
A pattern that made me look unstable.
A pattern that made me look incapable.
A pattern that made Diane look like the person who needed to step in.
I looked at Rachel.
“She’s been doing this for years.””
Rachel nodded.
“She did it with Daniel.””
My eyes moved back to the phone.
“Where is the file?””
Another pause.
“Claire…”
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer made me angry.
“You don’t know?””
“She keeps everything locked.””
Rachel suddenly stepped closer.
“I know where she hides things.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel looked nervous.
“My mother has a study.””
I frowned.
“I’ve never seen it.””
“Exactly.””
The realization hit me.
Because it was true.
Diane had visited our house hundreds of times.
But I had never once been inside her study.
“She always said it was private.””
Rachel nodded.
“Because it was.””
Daniel was still on the phone.
“Rachel?””
“She knows now.””
A pause.
“Rachel is there?””
“Yes.””
Daniel went silent.
Then:
“Claire, listen to me.””
“What?””
“Do not go to Diane’s house.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Why?””
“Because if she knows you’ve seen those videos, she’ll know you’re looking for the file.””
“So?””
“So she’ll move it.””
I stared at the phone.
“And if she moves it?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Then we may never find proof.””
Proof.
That word bothered me.
Because I suddenly realized something.
Diane wasn’t afraid of being caught.
She was afraid of being exposed.
There was a difference.
“I’m going.””
Both Daniel and Rachel spoke at the same time.
“No.””
“Claire.””
I looked at Rachel.
“You said she has a file.””
“Yes.””
“You said she has been collecting information about me.””
“Yes.””
“You said she wants my daughter.””
Rachel’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Then I need to see what she has.””
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Claire, don’t do this alone.””
“I’m not alone.””
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
“I’m coming.””
The line went silent.
Then Daniel said:
“I should have told you.””
The anger in me softened slightly.
Not disappeared.
Just changed.
“Why didn’t you?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because I thought if I ignored her, she would stop.””
I closed my eyes.
“And did she?””
“No.””
I looked toward the stairs.
At the place where Noah had gone.
At the room where Lily slept.
“No more ignoring.””
Daniel exhaled.
“You’re right.””
“Where are you?””
“I’m on my way home.””
My heart jumped.
“From work?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m at my mother’s.””
Everything stopped.
“You’re where?””
“I went there after she called me.””
“When?””
My face went pale.
“Daniel, leave.””
“I’m trying.””
“What do you mean?””
I heard movement on his end.
A door closing.
Then his voice lowered.
“She locked the study.””
My stomach dropped.
“You’re inside?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel.””
“I found the file.””
The world went silent.
“You found it?””
“Yes.””
“What’s in it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His breathing changed.
Like he was scared.
“I found something else.””
“What?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Claire, there are documents here from before Lily was born.””
“What kind of documents?””
“I don’t know.””
“Read them.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because they aren’t about Lily.””
My heart pounded.
“Then what are they about?””
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Then Daniel whispered:
“They’re about Noah.””
I felt my entire body go cold.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Noah?””
“Yes.””
“What does she have about Noah?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I could hear him breathing.
Then:
“Photos.””
My blood ran cold.
“Photos of what?””
“Claire…”
“Tell me.””
“She took pictures of him.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Doing what?””
Another pause.
“Crying.””
The anger that filled me was almost unbearable.
“She took pictures of my son crying?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Because she wrote notes underneath them.””
I felt sick.
“What notes?””
He was quiet.
Then he read them.
“‘Evidence of emotional instability.’”
I couldn’t breathe.
My son.
My sweet, sensitive, kind little boy.
The child who cried when he thought he failed.
The child who cared too much.
She had taken his emotions…
and turned them into weapons.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Get out of there.””
“I’m trying.””
“Now.””
“I found something else.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.
“A letter.””
“From who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“It’s from Diane.””
“What does it say?””
Silence.
Then:
“It says she knows Lily isn’t the only child she can take from us.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Before Daniel could answer, another sound came through the phone.
A door opening.
Someone entering the room.
Daniel went silent.
“Daniel?””
No response.
“Daniel?””
Then I heard a woman’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“Looking for something, son?””
My blood turned to ice.
Diane.
I grabbed the phone.
“Daniel?””
Still nothing.
Then Diane spoke again.
But this time, she wasn’t talking to him.
She was talking to me.
Because somehow…
she knew I was listening.
“Claire.””
My hand shook.
“Did you really think you could search my house and I wouldn’t notice?””
The call went quiet.
Then Diane whispered:
“You should have asked yourself one question before you opened that door.””
I couldn’t move.
“What question?””
Her answer came softly.
“Why do you think Noah was the one who found the first video?””
My heart stopped.
Because suddenly…
I realized something.
May you like
Noah hadn’t just discovered Diane’s secret.
Someone had wanted him to.
