Chapter 8: The Sister From the Shadows

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The voice on the phone was calm.

Too calm.

Like someone who had spent years preparing for this conversation.

Charlotte.

My father’s first daughter.

My sister.

A person I never knew existed.

A person my family had erased.

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“That’s the first question you ask?””

My jaw tightened.

“What do you want?””

Silence.

Then:

“I want what was taken from me.””

The words carried years of anger.

Years of pain.

I looked around the old estate.

At the documents scattered across the desk.

At Sarah.

At Alexander.

Everyone was watching me.

Waiting.

“Charlotte, if you’re my sister, why didn’t you come to me?””

Her voice softened.

“Because your father made sure you would never believe me.””

I looked at Alexander.

He lowered his eyes.

“She’s telling the truth,” he whispered.

I turned away.

“Tell me everything.””

Charlotte was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

“My father was a brilliant man.””

The way she said it made me uneasy.

“Brilliant?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Brilliant at making people believe he was a good man.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the trees moved in the wind.

“Where is Thomas?””

Charlotte didn’t answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice changed.

“He’s closer than you think.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’ve been living inside his lie your entire life.””

I looked at Alexander.

“What happened five years ago?””

Charlotte sighed.

“That was when I found the documents.””

The same documents everyone kept mentioning.

The ones that had destroyed everything.

“I discovered my father had stolen the company from Alexander’s family.””

She continued.

“I discovered he had hidden money, changed records, and erased people who stood in his way.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“And then?””

“He found out I knew.””

A long silence followed.

“What did he do?””

Charlotte’s voice became quieter.

“He tried to make a deal with me.””

“What kind of deal?””

“He offered me money.””

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Money.

The answer Thomas Whitmore had always used.

“And when you refused?””

“He threatened me.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Charlotte…”

Everyone heard the name.

Everyone knew this was real now.

Charlotte continued.

“He told me nobody would believe me.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Because who would believe the daughter who appeared after twenty years?””

I closed my eyes.

Because she was right.

That was exactly how my father operated.

He controlled the story before anyone else could tell it.

“What happened after that?””

“I disappeared.””

My eyes opened.

“Did he hurt you?””

“No.””

A pause.

“But he made everyone think he did.””

The room became silent.

“He used my disappearance to create a story.””

“What story?””

“That I had abandoned him.””

I frowned.

“He told people you left?””

“Yes.””

The same thing he had done to Sarah.

The same thing Victoria had done.

A pattern.

A family built on disappearing people.

Charlotte continued.

“Then he faked his own death.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because someone was coming for him.””

“Who?””

Charlotte didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked:

“Did you ever wonder why your father’s funeral was so private?””

I thought back.

The small ceremony.

The limited guests.

The rushed burial.

At the time, everyone said it was because he wanted privacy.

Now it felt different.

“Who attended?””

“People loyal to him.””

“And?””

“And one person who wanted him gone.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Charlotte whispered:

“Your mother.””

The words hit me.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I stepped away from the phone.

“No.””

Charlotte’s voice remained calm.

“Daniel, your entire family history is built on lies.””

I looked at Alexander.

He looked away.

“You knew?””

Alexander nodded slowly.

“Some of it.””

My anger returned.

“You all knew pieces.””

Nobody answered.

“And nobody told me.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I looked at everyone.

“You all made decisions about my life.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Victoria.

My father.

Richard.

Alexander.

Everyone thought they were protecting something.

And everyone destroyed something instead.

Charlotte spoke again.

“There’s a reason I called you tonight.””

I brought the phone back to my ear.

“What reason?””

“Because Thomas knows you found the documents.””

My blood went cold.

“How?””

“He has people watching.””

I looked toward the dark windows.

The feeling of being watched returned.

“What does he want?””

Charlotte answered:

“What he has always wanted.””

A pause.

“Control.””

Before I could respond, a sound came from outside.

A car.

Then another.

Headlights appeared through the trees.

Sarah looked toward the window.

“Daniel.””

I saw them.

Three vehicles.

Approaching the estate.

Alexander immediately stood.

“We have to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Who are they?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Charlotte spoke urgently through the phone.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Take the documents.””

I looked at the desk.

“Why?””

“Because they are the only thing keeping you alive.””

The call suddenly cut.

I stared at the phone.

“Charlotte?””

Nothing.

The vehicles stopped outside.

Doors opened.

People stepped out.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, we need to go.””

But before we could move, the front door of the estate opened.

Not forced.

Not broken.

Opened.

Someone had a key.

A man entered.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

A familiar smile.

A Whitmore smile.

My blood froze.

Because I knew that smile.

I had seen it my entire life.

The same confidence.

The same calmness.

The same expression my father wore in every photograph.

The man looked at me.

“Daniel.””

Nobody moved.

Alexander stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

“I see you finally learned the truth.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because every part of me already knew.

But my mind refused to accept it.

“Dad?””

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed whatever remained of my certainty.

Thomas Whitmore was alive.

He looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

Sarah grabbed my hand.

Victoria’s words echoed in my mind.

He was supposed to be dead.

Thomas looked around the room.

At the documents.

At Alexander.

At Sarah.

Then his eyes stopped on the photograph of Emma.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You found her.””

I stared.

“Found who?””

Thomas looked at me.

Then quietly said:

“My granddaughter.””

The room went silent.

I stepped forward.

“Emma?””

Thomas nodded.

“But not the one you think.””

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at the documents on the table.

Then at me.

“Daniel, everything you discovered tonight is only half the truth.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

“Then tell me the other half.””

My father looked toward the door.

Toward the darkness outside.

And for the first time, the man who had controlled everything looked afraid.

“Because if Charlotte is alive…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Thomas whispered:

“Then the person who tried to kill her is still alive too.””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Then he looked directly at me.

“And they are coming for Emma.””
