Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Lies
I stared at the message on my phone.
Five words.
Five words that turned the entire room upside down.
*Don’t trust Elisa either.*
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Because ten seconds earlier, I had been ready to believe her.
Not completely.
Not blindly.
But enough.
She had looked scared.
She had admitted Marcus was hiding something.
She had spoken like someone trapped.
And now, suddenly, I had to question everything.
That was the hardest part about uncovering the truth.
The lies didn’t disappear all at once.
They multiplied.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Elisa noticed.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Her expression changed.
“Daniel?””
I looked at her carefully.
“Who sent you to the office?””
She frowned.
“What?””
“Did you know I would come here?””
“No.””
“Then why did you come?””
She hesitated.
Too long.
“I heard the door.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked away.
The woman standing in front of me was my brother’s wife of seven years.
The mother of my niece.
The person who had smiled beside Marcus at family dinners.
But now I wondered how much of that smile had been real.
“I came because I wanted to talk to you,” she finally said.
“About what?””
“About Sophia.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then talk.””
Elisa looked at the closed door.
Then lowered her voice.
“You need to understand something about Marcus.””
I almost laughed.
“Funny. Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because you don’t know him the way we do.””
“I know him better than anyone.””
“No.””
The word was soft.
But firm.
“You know the version of Marcus he lets people see.””
That sentence bothered me because I knew it was true.
Everyone had a public version of themselves.
Even me.
The confident filmmaker.
The investigator.
The person who walked into difficult situations and exposed uncomfortable truths.
But my brother had always been better at hiding.
“What happened to my mother?”” I asked.
Elisa’s face changed.
There it was again.
Fear.
“She’s alive.””
The answer hit me harder than I expected.
“You know where she is?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because Marcus didn’t want you involved.””
“Involved in what?””
She didn’t respond.
I stepped closer.
“Elisa.””
Her eyes lifted.
“Your brother believed someone was manipulating Sophia.””
I looked toward the folder.
“The evaluations?””
She nodded.
“He started keeping records.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought if he went to the police without proof, nobody would believe him.””
I stared at her.
“So you’re saying Marcus installed a painful device under his daughter’s chair to investigate who was hurting her?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, Daniel. That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
She took a deep breath.
“Someone else installed the mechanism.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to understand that Marcus is not the only person hiding things.””
The words hung between us.
Then something caught my attention.
A small movement.
A shadow beneath the office door.
Someone was standing outside.
I looked at Elisa.
She saw it too.
Her face went pale.
Neither of us spoke.
The shadow remained for several seconds.
Then disappeared.
I walked toward the door.
Elisa grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if someone is listening, they already know we know.””
I looked at her hand on my arm.
She released me immediately.
“Sorry.””
I opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
But on the floor outside the office was something that hadn’t been there before.
A small envelope.
I picked it up.
No name.
No address.
Nothing.
Elisa whispered:
“Don’t open that here.””
“Why?””
“Because if it’s what I think it is…”
She stopped.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“It means someone wants you to find it.””
I looked at the envelope.
Then at her.
“And you think that’s dangerous?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever is leaving these things knows exactly what they’re doing.””
I opened it anyway.
Inside was a single photograph.
My hands froze.
It was Sophia.
Taken in this house.
She was sitting at the kitchen table.
Crying.
But that wasn’t what made my chest tighten.
It was what was written on the back.
A date.
Three months earlier.
And one sentence.
*She tried to tell you before.*
I turned the photograph over.
“What does this mean?””
Elisa stared at it.
“I don’t know.””
But she looked like she did.
I noticed.
“You’re lying.””
Her eyes filled.
“Daniel…”
“No. You know something.””
She sat down heavily.
“I know that Sophia has been afraid for a long time.””
“How long?””
“Since before summer.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Marcus said you would make things worse.””
I stared at her.
“Me?””
“He said you would investigate. He said you wouldn’t stop until you found answers.””
“And that’s bad?””
“For some people.””
The way she said it made my skin crawl.
“Who?””
Elisa didn’t answer.
Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
She unlocked it.
Her hands were shaking.
“There’s something you need to see.””
She opened a video.
The screen showed a dark hallway.
A child’s bedroom.
Sophia’s room.
The timestamp was from two months earlier.
The camera angle suggested it had been recorded secretly.
Sophia was sitting on her bed.
Holding a stuffed animal.
Then the bedroom door opened.
A person entered.
The video quality was poor.
The face was hidden.
But the voice was clear.
“Who did you tell?””
Sophia froze.
“Nobody.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I didn’t.””
The person moved closer.
The camera shook.
Then Sophia whispered:
“Uncle Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
The person on the video went silent.
Then:
“You called him?””
“No.””
“You thought about calling him.””
The person leaned closer.
And then said:
“You know what happens when people outside this family learn secrets.””
The video ended.
I looked at Elisa.
“Who recorded this?””
She swallowed.
“I did.””
“When?””
“The night I realized something was wrong.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Marcus?””
She looked at me.
And I knew.
That wasn’t the answer.
“Of who?””
Before she could respond, the office door behind us opened.
We both turned.
Marcus stood there.
He wasn’t angry.
That would have been easier.
He looked exhausted.
Almost defeated.
His eyes moved from me.
To Elisa.
To the video still playing on her phone.
Then he quietly said:
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
I stepped forward.
“Who was in Sophia’s room?””
Marcus looked at his wife.
Then at me.
And for the first time in my life, my brother looked scared.
“Daniel…”
“Answer me.””
He ran a hand over his face.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“From someone who knows our family better than you think.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me who.””
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
Then closed the office door.
When he spoke again, his voice was barely above a whisper.
“The person who has been hurting Sophia…”
He paused.
“…is someone she loves.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Elisa.
Then at Marcus.
Neither of them looked away.
May you like
And then Marcus said the one name I never expected.
“Your father.””
