Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back From the Past

For five years, Daniel Whitmore had carried the weight of a dead woman’s name.

Lauren.

I had heard it only once before.

A name hidden behind silence.

A name that appeared whenever Daniel talked about his past but disappeared whenever I asked questions.

I always thought it was because grief was painful.

I never imagined it was because the person he lost was still alive.

I stood in my kitchen holding the phone, unable to move.

“Lauren?””

The voice on the other end was quiet.

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“You died.””

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

“That’s what Richard wanted everyone to believe.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because if Richard knows I contacted you, he’ll try to stop me.””

I looked toward the window.

The street outside was empty.

But after everything that happened, empty no longer meant safe.

“You’re saying Richard knew you were alive?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

Another silence.

That silence hurt.

“Daniel knows.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that everyone seemed to know except me.

“When can I meet you?””

“Tonight.””

“Where?””

She gave me an address.

A small cabin outside the city.

Then she said something that made my heart stop.

“Emily, before you come, I need you to understand one thing.””

“What?””

“Daniel is not the man you think he is.””

I looked at the phone.

“You’re too late.””

“What?””

“I already know that.””

I ended the call.

But I didn’t feel relieved.

I felt exhausted.

Because every answer seemed to create three more questions.

That evening, Daniel came home earlier than usual.

The first thing he did was look at me.

He knew.

I could see it.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Then I said:

“I spoke to Lauren.””

The color left his face.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

He sat down slowly.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“I need the truth before I hear another explanation.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She contacted you.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Then she knows.””

“Knows what?””

His silence was unbearable.

“Daniel.””

He finally looked at me.

“Lauren didn’t die.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I turned away.

I felt anger.

But underneath the anger was something worse.

Disappointment.

“How long?””

“Since before Noah was born.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“So while I was building a life with you, you were hiding that your dead fiancée was alive?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

Daniel stood.

“Emily, please.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say please anymore.””

He stopped.

“I need to understand how many versions of reality you had while I only had one.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I was trying to protect Noah.””

“From what?””

“From Richard.””

I stared at him.

“Everything always comes back to your father.””

“Because it was always him.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He didn’t answer.

And that answer hurt.

Because once again, fear won.

I walked past him.

“I’m meeting Lauren tonight.””

Daniel immediately followed.

“No.””

I turned.

“No?””

“You can’t go alone.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s dangerous.””

I almost smiled.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The woman who was supposedly dead is dangerous, but the people who made my son eat on the floor are not?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“That’s not what I mean.””

“Then tell me what you mean.””

He didn’t.

I grabbed my coat.

“Emily.””

I looked back.

“I need the truth.””

Then I left.

The cabin was surrounded by trees.

The kind of place where people went when they wanted to disappear.

I parked outside and sat there for several minutes.

Part of me wanted to leave.

Part of me wanted to believe this was another trap.

But I had already spent years living inside other people’s lies.

I wasn’t going to run from the truth now.

I knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

And there she was.

Lauren.

She looked nothing like the woman I imagined.

She wasn’t glamorous.

She wasn’t dangerous.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden alone.

“Emily.””

I nodded.

“Lauren.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Inside the cabin, there were photographs everywhere.

Old photographs.

One caught my attention.

Daniel.

Young.

Happy.

Standing beside Lauren.

My chest tightened.

“You loved him.””

Lauren looked at the picture.

“Yes.””

“Do you still?””

She was quiet.

Then:

“I loved who he was before his family changed him.””

That answer surprised me.

I sat down.

“Tell me everything.””

Lauren took a deep breath.

“Richard found out I was pregnant before I told Daniel.””

I froze.

“Pregnant?””

She nodded.

“I was carrying Daniel’s child.””

The room became silent.

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

“Richard came to me.””

“What did he want?””

She looked away.

“He wanted me gone.””

I felt sick.

“He threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with pain.

“He told me the Whitmore family would destroy me if I stayed.””

I looked down.

“And you left.””

“I had no choice.””

“There’s always a choice.””

Lauren looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No?””

I thought about Noah.

“I understand what it feels like when powerful people think they can decide your life.””

That made her look at me differently.

She nodded.

“Richard arranged everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“He created a story.””

My stomach tightened.

“He told everyone I died.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

“Because my child threatened everything.””

I stared at her.

“Your child?””

She nodded.

“The baby survived.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Lauren reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a photograph.

A young boy.

Around five years old.

I looked at the picture.

My hands became cold.

Because the child had Daniel’s eyes.

“His name is Lucas.””

I stared at her.

“Daniel has another son?””

Lauren nodded.

“He does.””

I couldn’t speak.

Then the question came.

The one I was afraid to ask.

“What does Lucas have to do with Noah?””

Lauren looked at me.

“Everything.””

She placed another document on the table.

“This is the original trust agreement.””

I looked at it.

“The one Richard hid?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

There was a section I had never seen.

A section that changed everything.

*In the event that Daniel Whitmore has more than one biological child, the inheritance shall be divided equally among all children.*

I looked up.

“Lucas.””

Lauren nodded.

“Richard didn’t want Noah to exist because Noah wasn’t the only threat.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Richard wanted the entire company controlled by his own descendants.””

I stared at her.

“Victoria’s children.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel’s children would prevent that.””

“Yes.””

Everything connected.

The cruelty.

The secrets.

The lies.

They weren’t just trying to remove Noah.

They were trying to erase every child who stood between Richard and control.

A child like Noah.

A child like Lucas.

I looked at Lauren.

“Why come back now?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Lucas found out the truth.””

My heart sank.

“He knows?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He found old documents.””

She looked at me.

“He learned his grandfather abandoned him.””

I looked at the picture.

Another child hurt by the same family.

Another child who had been made to feel unwanted.

“Where is he?””

Lauren hesitated.

“Safe.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She looked at me.

“Richard knows he exists.””

The room felt colder.

“And?””

“He’s trying to get custody of him too.””

I stood immediately.

“No.””

Lauren nodded.

“That’s why I contacted you.””

“Why me?””

“Because you’re the only person who fought back.””

I looked at her.

“I’m not special.””

Lauren shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“You’re a mother.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I looked at the screen.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Daniel?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emily, where are you?””

I didn’t respond.

Then he said:

“I know about Lauren.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I know she showed you the documents.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because I was the one who asked her to contact you.””

I looked at Lauren.

She looked away.

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Because there’s one thing I never told you.””

A pause.

“Richard wasn’t the person who changed Noah’s records.””

I felt the air disappear.

“Then who was?””

Daniel answered quietly.

May you like

And the truth was worse than anything I imagined.

“Me.””
