Chapter 7: The Woman Who Wanted Noah Forgotten

The message stayed on my screen all night.

*You have until tomorrow morning.*

Fourteen words.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just a threat.

I had spent years believing the worst thing that could happen was being rejected by Daniel’s family.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was realizing they had never been rejecting Noah because he was different.

They were afraid of him.

Afraid of a five-year-old boy who didn’t even know what he had inherited.

Afraid of the truth.

I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

The documents were spread in front of me.

Richard’s notes.

The trust papers.

The false birth record.

The evidence of financial manipulation.

Every piece of the puzzle was finally appearing.

And every piece led back to the same person.

Evelyn Hawthorne.

Michael arrived just after seven in the morning.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

“Any more messages?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

He placed his briefcase down.

“That’s usually when people like this become more dangerous.””

Sarah sat quietly across from us.

She looked exhausted.

“You need to understand something about Evelyn.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She doesn’t lose control.””

I glanced at the documents.

“She already lost it.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was low.

“She lost access to something. That’s different.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew what she meant.

People like Evelyn didn’t see family.

They saw ownership.

They didn’t see relationships.

They saw positions.

Michael opened his laptop.

“I reviewed the documents again.””

“And?””

“There are enough irregularities to challenge several actions taken by the Hawthorne estate.””

“Can Evelyn still control the assets?””

“Some.””

He paused.

“But not Noah’s trust.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Richard built protections into it.””

Michael turned the laptop toward me.

“Richard expected someone would try to challenge Noah’s claim.””

I read the notes carefully.

“Why?””

Michael looked at Sarah.

“Because he knew his own family.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Richard had known.

He knew the people closest to him might hurt the person he wanted to protect.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

This time, I answered.

But I didn’t say hello.

Neither did he.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then:

“Is Noah with you?””

The question made my expression harden.

“Yes.””

“Is he safe?””

I almost ended the call.

Almost.

“Why wouldn’t he be?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because my mother knows about the documents.””

“I know.””

A pause.

“She contacted you?””

“She threatened me.””

Daniel went quiet.

“What did she say?””

“Nothing directly.””

I looked at the message.

“But she didn’t have to.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Emily, you need to leave.””

The words surprised me.

“What?””

“Take Noah and leave the city.””

Michael looked up.

I continued listening.

“Daniel, are you telling me to run?””

“I’m telling you to protect him.””

“You mean like you protected him before?””

The silence was painful.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But Emily, you don’t understand what my mother does when she feels cornered.””

I stood.

“Then tell me.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Tell me everything.””

A long pause.

Then:

“My mother has people everywhere.””

“That’s vague.””

“I know.””

“Daniel.””

He lowered his voice.

“She doesn’t threaten people herself.””

My stomach tightened.

“She makes problems disappear.””

The room became colder.

Michael motioned for me to put the phone on speaker.

I did.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“She always did that,” she whispered.

Daniel heard her.

“Sarah is there?””

“Yes.””

Another silence.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Sarah.””

She looked at the phone.

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyes filled.

“Don’t.””

“I should have listened to you.””

“You should have listened to Emily.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

Because she was right.

Then he said,

“I need both of you to understand something.””

His voice changed.

Serious.

“Evelyn is not trying to get the money.””

Michael frowned.

“Then what?””

Daniel answered:

“She’s trying to destroy the evidence.””

I looked at the documents.

“Why?””

“Because if the truth comes out, it doesn’t just affect the trust.””

“What else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Everything.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Before Daniel could answer, the call ended.

Not disconnected.

Ended.

Michael immediately checked.

“No signal issue.””

Sarah stood.

“She did it.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Sarah stared toward the window.

“Evelyn.””

A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door.

All three of us froze.

Michael immediately stood.

“I’ll check.””

He walked toward the entrance.

I grabbed Noah’s baby monitor from the table and moved toward the stairs.

My first instinct was simple.

Protect my child.

The door opened.

And I heard a familiar voice.

“Emily.””

Evelyn.

I came back downstairs.

She stood in my doorway wearing a perfectly tailored coat.

No anger.

No panic.

No signs of guilt.

Just calm.

That frightened me more.

“Why are you here?””

Evelyn looked past me.

“Where is Noah?””

My body immediately became protective.

“Not your concern.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The reason this situation became complicated.””

I stared at her.

“You mean because I protect my son?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Because you don’t understand the world he was born into.””

I almost laughed.

“My son was born into a world where adults made him clean floors to prove he belonged.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I never intended to hurt him.””

“You watched it happen.””

Silence.

That was her answer.

Evelyn looked at Michael.

“You’re making a mistake involving yourself in this.””

Michael didn’t move.

“I represent Emily and Noah.””

Evelyn smiled slightly.

“You represent a woman who doesn’t understand what she’s fighting.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“I understand perfectly.””

For the first time, her confidence weakened.

“You think this is about money.””

“It isn’t.””

“You think you’re protecting Noah.””

“I am.””

She looked at me carefully.

“You have no idea who Noah really is.””

The sentence made my blood run cold.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here to give you a choice.””

I didn’t take it.

“What choice?””

She placed it on the table.

“Walk away.””

I stared at the envelope.

“From what?””

“From the Hawthorne family.””

I laughed.

“You mean walk away from defending my son.””

“No.””

Her voice became colder.

“Walk away from a war you cannot win.””

Michael stepped forward.

“This conversation is over.””

Evelyn ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Take Noah. Leave. Change your name if you want.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I’m offering you a chance.””

“A chance to do what?””

“To survive.””

The word hung in the air.

Then Evelyn turned toward the door.

But before she left, she stopped.

“One more thing.””

I waited.

She looked back at me.

“Ask Daniel why Adrian really died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Everyone thinks I’m the villain because it’s convenient.””

She opened the door.

“But the truth is always more complicated.””

Then she walked away.

I stood frozen.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I wondered if there was another secret.

Another lie.

Another person who had been hiding the truth.

Sarah looked terrified.

Michael looked confused.

And I looked at the envelope Evelyn left behind.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My hands shook.

It was taken five years ago.

The night Noah was born.

I recognized the hospital.

I recognized the hallway.

But I didn’t recognize the person standing beside Daniel.

The person Daniel had never mentioned.

The person holding a folder of documents.

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, there was a handwritten message.

*Ask Daniel why he was at the hospital two hours before Noah was born.*

I stared at the words.

Because suddenly I wasn’t only searching for what Evelyn had done.

I was searching for what Daniel had hidden.

And when Daniel arrived at my house thirty minutes later, the first thing I asked him was:

“Why were you at the hospital before I went into labor?””

Daniel’s face went completely pale.

May you like

Because he knew.

He knew I had finally found the one secret he never wanted me to discover.
