Chapter 9: The Man Behind Every Secret

I didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?

For years, I believed I understood my family.

I believed Richard Hayes was my father.

I believed Sarah’s death was an accident.

I believed Victoria was simply a woman who struggled with the responsibility of raising someone else’s child.

Every belief I had built my life around was collapsing.

And at the center of it all was one person.

Richard.

My father.

The man who taught me my first business lesson.

The man who held my hand when I was afraid.

The man who told me family was everything.

And somehow, the same man had been hiding the truth from me since childhood.

At 6:00 a.m., I walked into the library.

Richard was already there.

Of course he was.

He sat in his usual chair with a cup of coffee beside him.

Like this was another normal morning.

Like my world hadn’t been destroyed.

He looked up.

“You know.””

Not a question.

A statement.

I closed the door behind me.

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then Richard sighed.

“I hoped you never would.””

I stared at him.

“That’s all you have to say?””

“What do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

His eyes hardened slightly.

“You think the truth is simple?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I think you made sure it wasn’t.””

Richard looked away.

That small movement confirmed something.

He was tired.

Not innocent.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

“Why?””

The question came out quieter than I expected.

“Why did you raise me?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Why did you give me your name?””

Silence.

“Why did you let me believe you were my father?””

Finally, he spoke.

“Because I was your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I may not have given you life.””

His voice softened.

“But I raised you.””

“That doesn’t erase the lie.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It doesn’t.””

For the first time, I saw regret.

Real regret.

But regret didn’t fix anything.

“Who was Marcus Hale?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“A mistake from the past.””

“My biological father.””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Even though I already knew.

Hearing him admit it made it real.

“Why did my mother leave him?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Because he was dangerous.””

“How?””

“He cared about power more than people.””

I almost laughed.

The irony was impossible to ignore.

“And you’re different?””

Richard looked at me.

“I tried to be.””

“Did you?””

He didn’t answer.

I found Victoria in the dining room.

She was alone.

No makeup.

No perfect smile.

For the first time, she looked human.

She looked exhausted.

“You knew about Marcus.””

She didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Sarah told me.””

I stopped.

“Sarah trusted you.””

Victoria looked down.

“She needed someone.””

“And you betrayed her.””

Her eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

Victoria took a slow breath.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Richard.””

The answer was immediate.

I studied her face.

This wasn’t manipulation.

Not this time.

“Then why help him?””

“Because I thought I could control him.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“I was wrong.””

I sat across from her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She looked toward the window.

“When I met Richard, I thought he was just an old businessman with a powerful name.””

“But?””

“But he had secrets.””

“Like me.””

She nodded.

“Like you.””

The words felt strange.

“You knew I wasn’t his son.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Richard offered me a deal.””

My stomach tightened.

“What deal?””

“He said if I married you, I would have access to your life.””

“My life?””

“Your finances. Your company. Your family.””

I stared at her.

“So it was planned.””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt less than the confirmation.

Because deep down, I already knew.

“Why Emma?””

Victoria looked away.

“Because Sarah protected everything for her.””

“The trust fund.””

“Yes.””

“And you wanted it.””

“At first.””

“At first?””

Her expression changed.

That was interesting.

“What changed?””

Victoria was silent.

Then:

“Emma.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She reminded me of Sarah.””

I didn’t expect that.

“She hated me,” Victoria whispered.

“Who?””

“Sarah.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew who I was.””

Victoria looked down.

“She knew I wasn’t like her.””

The room was quiet.

Then she continued.

“When Emma was born, Sarah created protections around her. Legal protections. Financial protections.””

“The guardianship.””

“Yes.””

“You were trying to break them.””

“Yes.””

“By making her depend on you.””

Victoria nodded.

The honesty was almost worse.

“You made a child clean floors.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I know.””

“You scared her.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because Richard told me if I didn’t prove I was in control, he would destroy me.””

I stared at her.

“Destroy you how?””

“He had information about my past.””

“What past?””

She looked at me.

“The kind of past people use when they want someone silent.””

I didn’t ask more.

Because I already knew the pattern.

Everyone around Richard had something to fear.

Everyone had a reason to obey.

Everyone except me.

Maybe that was why he kept me close.

Daniel arrived with the original guardianship document.

He placed it on the table.

“The truth is here.””

I opened it.

The first page looked normal.

Then I saw the difference.

The purpose.

*Emergency Protection Agreement.*

Not transfer.

Not removal.

Protection.

I kept reading.

The agreement stated that if Sarah died under suspicious circumstances, Emma’s custody would temporarily be reviewed by an independent guardian.

Not Victoria.

Not Richard.

Someone outside the family.

A person Sarah trusted.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

He pointed to the final page.

A name.

My heart stopped.

“Claire Morgan.””

Sarah’s friend.

The woman who called me.

The woman who disappeared.

“She was supposed to protect Emma.””

Daniel nodded.

“But someone changed it after Sarah died.””

“Richard.””

“Yes.””

Everything connected.

The floor cleaning.

The lies.

The control.

The fear.

Richard didn’t just want money.

He wanted access.

He wanted Emma under his influence.

But one question remained.

“Why did Sarah die?””

Nobody answered.

Until Daniel looked at his phone.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A video file.

Attached.

I opened it.

The video showed a hospital hallway.

Three years earlier.

The night Sarah died.

My heart pounded.

The camera angle was poor.

But the voices were clear.

Sarah was standing with someone.

Arguing.

Then she said:

“You can’t do this to him.””

The other person replied:

“You don’t understand what’s at stake.””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“If he finds out, he’ll hate you.””

The person answered:

“He’ll understand eventually.””

I leaned closer.

The figure turned slightly.

Not enough to see clearly.

But enough.

I knew the voice.

I knew that voice.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood.

The person Sarah was arguing with that night…

Wasn’t Richard.

Wasn’t Victoria.

It was someone else.

Someone I had trusted even more.

Someone who had spent years pretending to help me uncover the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

*I’m sorry you had to find out this way.*

The sender’s name appeared.

May you like

And my blood ran cold.

*Daniel Cross.*
