Chapter 8 - THE VANISHING WITNESS AND THE BANK RECORDS

The next seventy-two hours passed in a blur.

Elena worked through contacts, pulled bank records, traced transactions. I stayed with Clara and Sophie, never letting my daughter out of sight, never answering the door to anyone but Elena.

On the morning of the second day, Elena called me. Her voice was tight.

“I have the records. Peter received seventy thousand dollars in two payments. The second deposit came from an account tied to the shell company that bought your land. The same company Corrigan controls. That proves they paid him to participate. But we still cannot prove forgery or murder without Peter himself.”

“Then we find him,” I said. “If they haven’t killed him yet… he must be somewhere they can keep him quiet but still produce him if needed.”

I thought of everything Peter had ever told me. Places he went when he needed to think. Safe houses. Family properties.

“There’s a cabin,” I said suddenly. “Deep in the woods on the far edge of the old property. Peter helped restore it years ago. He always said it was where he would go if he ever needed to disappear.”

Elena hesitated.

“If he is there… Evan or Corrigan will be watching him. It could be a trap.”

“Maybe. But it is our only lead.”

We drove out that afternoon, Elena following in her own car, me driving Clara’s vehicle with Sophie safe at Clara’s house. We reached the access road and parked. The cabin sat a mile deep in the trees, quiet and remote.

We approached on foot. No smoke rose from the chimney. No car sat outside. But as we drew close, I saw something through the window. A half-empty coffee mug on the table. A familiar wool coat draped across a chair.

Peter was here.

Elena motioned me back. She drew her concealed carry license and weapon, stepped forward, and kicked the door open.

“Police! Hands up!”

We rushed inside.

Empty.

But Peter’s phone lay on the table. Charging cables ran from the wall. Food sat on the counter. He had been here. Recently. And they had taken him away in such a hurry they left everything behind.

Elena picked up the phone.

“Password protected. But I can get someone to crack it.”

She turned it over. Something fell out—a folded scrap of paper tucked behind the case.

Elena unfolded it. Handwriting. Peter’s.

*They are moving me tonight. To a safe house across the state. Corrigan says I know too much. He will make sure I never testify. Lila—if you find this—KNOW THIS. Evan did not act alone. Corrigan ordered everything. The accident. The marriage. The forgery. And there is another. A fourth partner. I do not know his name. But I heard them call him THE SILENT ONE. He signs nothing. Appears nowhere. But he takes half of everything. And he is more dangerous than all of them combined.*

My blood ran cold.

A fourth partner. The Silent One.

Elena tucked the note carefully into an evidence bag.

“This changes everything. If there is someone else… someone even Corrigan fears… we are fighting a shadow. And shadows are very hard to catch.”

“We have to find Peter before tonight,” I said. “If they move him… we lose him forever.”

Elena looked at her watch.

“We have hours. I call in favors. Track cell tower pings. Highway cameras. Every resource I have. But Lila… if this Silent One exists… he may already know we are here. He may be watching us right now.”

I looked out the cabin window into the deep, dark woods.

“Let him watch. Because we are done running. Tomorrow in court… we show the money trail. We show the note. And we tell Judge Rivera everything. If Corrigan wants to silence us… he will have to come into the open and try.”
