Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW MESSAGE

I stared at those words until the letters seemed to blur.

You think this is over? You have no idea what you started.

My heart began to thud harder. I checked the number—no name attached. Unknown. Untraceable.

Sophia was in police custody. She couldn’t have sent this. Could she? Unless… unless she had someone else holding her phone. Or maybe she had sent it earlier, timed it to arrive now. Or maybe it wasn’t from her at all.

I stood up slowly, my legs stiff from sitting on the floor. I walked quietly down the hall and slipped into the guest room so I wouldn’t disturb Emily. I locked the door behind me and sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the screen again.

The message had been sent just three minutes ago. While Sophia was being booked at the station.

My fingers trembled as I typed a reply.

**“Who is this?”**

I watched the screen. Waited. One minute. Two. Five. No answer.

I walked to the window and looked out into the dark front yard. The streetlights cast pale orange pools on the pavement. No one stood outside. No car idled at the curb. Everything looked normal. But the message burned in my pocket, a cold, silent warning.

If it wasn’t Sophia… who was it?

I thought back over everything Sophia had said tonight. Her final words before the police took her away—*“You’ve no idea what you’ve done.”* She had said it with such certainty. Such menace. As if she had been waiting for me to make this exact choice. As if she wanted me to choose Emily.

A cold suspicion began to creep through me. Had she been goading me all along? Was tonight never really about a fight between her and Emily? Was it something else entirely?

I pulled up the video again on my phone—saved, backed up, copied to cloud storage. I watched it frame by frame. Sophia’s expression. Her glances toward the hallway before she fell. The way she had looked at me when I walked in.

And then I saw it. Just for a moment, before she turned to her “victim” act—when she realized I was pulling out my phone to call the police—she hadn’t looked scared. She had looked… satisfied. Almost relieved.

Why would she be relieved to get arrested?

My phone buzzed again. Another message. Same unknown number.

**“Keep protecting your wife, Daniel. It’s exactly what we want.”**

We.

My blood turned to ice.

I didn’t answer. I didn’t reply. I stood perfectly still in the darkened guest room, holding my phone, realizing with absolute clarity that Sophia was not working alone. There was someone else. Someone standing just out of sight, pulling strings. Someone who wanted me to choose Emily. Someone who wanted this conflict to blow apart exactly the way it had.

Why? What did they gain?

I walked back out into the hallway. Stopped outside our bedroom door. Leaned close. Silence inside. Emily and Mason were sleeping. Safe. For tonight.

But I knew now—tonight was not the end. It was the beginning. Whatever game Sophia and this unknown partner were playing… I had just walked right into the opening move exactly as they had planned.

I went back to the guest room, sat on the bed, and pulled up the police non-emergency line. I needed to know exactly what was happening with Sophia. And I needed to know who might be visiting her, calling her, or standing beside her while she sat in that holding cell.

When the officer answered, I identified myself and asked about my sister’s status.

“Mr. Carter,” the officer said, “your sister has been formally charged. She’s being held awaiting bail hearing tomorrow morning.”

“Has she had any visitors?” I asked. “Any calls? Anyone been in contact with her since she arrived?”

“One moment while I check.” A pause. Then the officer’s voice came back, slower. “Sir—she made one phone call. Approximately twenty minutes ago. To a number registered in your household.”

My breath caught. “My house?”

“Yes, sir. And… there’s something else. She declined legal aid. Said she already has representation. A lawyer was already waiting for her when she arrived. Called ahead, arranged to represent her before she even walked through the doors.”

My grip tightened on the phone. “What lawyer?”

“Let me see… the name is Julian Thorne.”

The name hit me like a physical blow. Julian Thorne. The most expensive, ruthless defense attorney in the county. A man who didn’t take cases unless there was something very valuable at stake. And Sophia—she worked part-time at a bookstore. She could never afford Julian Thorne. Not in a hundred years.

“Mr. Carter?” the officer asked.

“He’s there now?”

“He’s with her in the consultation room as we speak.”

I ended the call without saying goodbye. I sank back onto the bed, the room spinning.

Sophia had a high-priced lawyer waiting for her. Before she was even arrested. Someone had known exactly what would happen tonight. Someone had planned it. And that someone was pulling every string.

My phone buzzed a third time.

**“Sleep well, brother-in-law. The real show begins tomorrow.”**

I stood up and walked back to the bedroom door. I pressed my forehead against the wood. Emily was safe inside. She didn’t know any of this. She thought tonight was about a jealous sister and a foolish husband. She had no idea that we had just walked onto a stage—that there was an audience watching, and a script being followed, and a purpose far darker than anything we had imagined.

I whispered through the door, so quietly she might not even hear it.

“I will keep you safe, Emily. No matter who is behind this. No matter what they do. I will fix this. I promise.”

There was no answer from inside. But I heard movement. The soft shift of bedclothes. She was awake. She had heard me.

And somewhere out there, Julian Thorne was sitting in a police station consultation room with my sister. And someone else—someone who texted from unknown numbers—was watching, waiting, ready for Act Two.

Tomorrow the bail hearing would happen. And I knew, with absolute certainty, that tomorrow everything would change. The truth I had fought so hard to reveal tonight was about to be twisted, attacked, and torn apart. And I would be standing there alone, fighting for my family, against enemies I hadn’t even seen yet.
