Chapter 2 - THE RECORDING AND THE FALLOUT

Julian spun around. The pen clattered to the floor.

Eleanor paled, but recovered fast, straightening to her full height. “This is a private family matter. Leave, or I will have security remove you.”

“Security is already outside,” Sarah said, walking steadily toward my bed. “And everything you have said since you walked in… is recorded. Every threat. Every demand. The slap. The admission of conspiracy. It is all there.”

I saw the color drain from Julian’s face. He looked at the pillow, at the faint outline of my phone beneath it. “You recorded us?”

“I recorded everything,” I said, my cheek throbbing, my voice growing steadier by the second. “Every word. Every lie. Every threat against me and my daughter.”

Victoria grabbed the coat tighter around herself. “This… this is entrapment! None of it counts!”

“It counts,” Sarah said coolly, reaching beneath my pillow and retrieving the phone. She placed it into the evidence bag with practiced ease. “In this state, one-party consent is all that is required. And given what I just heard… I have more than enough to begin criminal proceedings. Conspiracy to commit fraud. Coercion. Elder abuse provisions apply even to postpartum incapacity. And assault.” She glanced at Eleanor. “That slap alone could cost you dearly.”

Eleanor’s mouth twisted, but for once she had no retort. Julian looked from Sarah to me, his eyes hardening into something ugly now that pretense was useless.

“You think this wins?” he said, his voice dropping low. “You are in a hospital bed, Genevieve. You cannot move. You cannot care for Hazel. The courts will look at your condition and decide exactly who is fit to raise her and manage your affairs.”

“Try me,” I said. “I built everything you hold. I know every law, every loophole, every person on the board. And now I know exactly who stands beside me… and who stands against me.”

Sarah turned to the three of them. “Leave. All of you. If any of you attempt to speak with Genevieve or Hazel without my presence, or attempt to remove, alter, or access any property, account, or document belonging to Genevieve Vance… you will be served with temporary restraining orders before you reach the hospital exit. Do not test me.”

For a long moment no one moved. Then Eleanor grabbed Julian’s arm. “We go,” she hissed. “We fight this properly. Not here.”

They turned and walked out—Julian stiff with rage, Victoria hiding her face behind a hand, Eleanor marching like an empress whose throne had been challenged. When the door clicked shut, Sarah pulled a chair beside my bed and took my hand.

“I heard everything, Gen. Every second. They have walked straight into their own trap.”

“But Julian is right,” I said, staring at Hazel, who had quieted but still whimpered in her sleep. “I cannot move. If he petitions for guardianship… he could still take everything legally.”

Sarah’s expression softened, but her voice remained firm. “He will try. But he made one fatal mistake: he gave me all the proof I need to show he is unfit. And there is something else… the timing of this is too perfect. He learned you would be paralyzed, and hours later he was here with papers prepared in advance. Gen… someone told him. Before you even knew.”

A coldness settled through me, heavier than the paralysis in my legs.

May you like

“Who?” I whispered.

Sarah leaned closer. “That is what we are going to find out. Because if someone inside your circle leaked medical information to Julian… there is a traitor much closer than any of us realized.”
