Thinking

Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Tried to Bury

The room stopped feeling like a room.

It became a courtroom.

The papers on the desk became evidence.

The people standing around me became witnesses.

And the person I trusted most became someone I no longer recognized.

I stared at the handwritten note.

Three words.

*Richard knew everything.*

My father’s name looked different on the page.

Not like the name of the man who used to carry me on his shoulders.

Not like the man who held my hand at the hospital after my mother died.

It looked like the name of someone who had a secret.

Someone who had been protecting himself.

I slowly looked up.

“Is this true?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked at the floor.

That was the answer.

My heart sank.

“Daddy.””

His eyes lifted.

I had called him that without thinking.

The same way I had called him my whole life.

But now the word felt painful.

“Tell me.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Richard, don’t.””

My head turned toward her.

“You knew too?””

Her face remained still.

But her silence gave her away.

Daniel took the document from my hands carefully.

“Everyone needs to sit down.””

Nobody moved.

Because some truths make people too afraid to breathe.

The document was old.

The paper had yellowed around the edges.

But the signatures were clear.

Daniel placed it under the light.

“This is a transfer agreement.””

I looked at him.

“What does it mean?””

He looked at my father.

“It means Claire discovered someone was attempting to change control of the estate.””

“Who?””

Daniel pointed at the signature.

“Thomas Reed.””

Vanessa’s father.

The same man from the photograph.

“The agreement shows Thomas attempted to create a claim over parts of the property,” Daniel continued.

I frowned.

“But why?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father spoke.

“Because he wanted control.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was quiet.

“He believed the house was wasted on a child.””

My stomach tightened.

“A child?””

My father nodded.

“He thought Lily was too young to inherit something this valuable.””

Daniel added:

“And according to these documents, Thomas wanted Richard to approve the transfer.””

I looked at my father.

“Did you?””

My father closed his eyes.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Almost desperately.

“No, Lily.””

I waited.

Because I needed more than a word.

“I refused.””

“Then why did Mommy write that you knew everything?””

My father looked destroyed.

“Because I knew Thomas was trying.””

“Did you know Vanessa was involved?””

Silence.

A long one.

Then my father whispered:

“I suspected.””

The room went cold.

I stepped back.

“You suspected?””

My father looked at me.

“I didn’t know how much she knew.””

“But you let her stay here.””

“I thought I could protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody protected me.””

My father looked away.

That hurt more than if he had argued.

Because he knew.

He knew I was right.

Daniel picked up another page from the document.

“There’s more.””

My father looked nervous.

“What?””

Daniel turned the page.

“At the bottom, Claire added a condition.””

“What condition?””

Daniel read carefully.

“If any person connected to the attempted transfer gains influence over Lily’s living situation or inheritance, the trust will immediately place the estate under independent legal protection.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She understood before anyone else.

That was why she was afraid.

Because the moment she tried to push me away…

The protection clause activated.

Daniel continued.

“Lily being removed from her own home today is exactly the type of event Claire prepared for.””

Vanessa laughed.

A cold, bitter laugh.

“You’re all making this sound worse than it is.””

I looked at her.

“How is locking a child outside not bad?””

Her eyes moved to mine.

For a second, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“Because you don’t understand the situation.””

“No.””

I held the letter tighter.

“I understand enough.””

Vanessa walked toward my father.

“You’re really going to let this happen?””

Richard stared.

“Let what happen?””

“Your daughter turning against you.””

My father’s expression changed.

“She isn’t turning against me.””

“Really?””

Vanessa pointed at me.

“Look at her.””

I flinched.

“She looks at you like you’re a stranger.””

My father became silent.

Because that was true.

And Vanessa knew it.

She had spent years creating that distance.

But then something unexpected happened.

My father stepped away from her.

“I should have listened to Claire.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“I should have seen what was happening.””

Her face hardened.

“Richard.””

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“I spent years telling myself I was protecting Lily.””

He looked at me.

“But I was protecting my own comfort.””

Nobody spoke.

My father wiped his face.

“I was afraid of losing everything again.””

I stared at him.

“Mommy?””

He nodded.

“After she died, I couldn’t accept that she was gone.””

His voice shook.

“And Vanessa was there. She helped me manage the house. The paperwork. Everything.””

He looked at the documents.

“But I stopped asking questions.””

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He stepped away to answer.

“Yes?””

His expression changed within seconds.

“What?””

Everyone noticed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“There’s a problem.””

My stomach dropped.

“What problem?””

“The bank records I requested tonight.””

“What about them?””

“They were altered.””

My father stood.

“Impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“Possible.””

The room became silent.

“Someone accessed the old estate files after Claire’s death and changed specific records.””

My eyes moved around the room.

Someone.

Again.

Always someone.

“Who?””

Daniel looked serious.

“I don’t know yet.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“So this proves nothing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Actually, it proves something.””

“What?””

“That someone is still trying to hide the truth.””

Later that night, Daniel asked me to stay in my room while he and my father reviewed the documents.

But sleep was impossible.

I sat beside the window.

The mansion stretched below me.

A place I thought I knew.

But every hallway seemed to hold another secret.

I looked at the garden.

The place where I sat alone in my birthday dress.

The place where I thought I had lost my home.

Now I understood something.

I hadn’t lost the house.

I had lost the people who were supposed to make it a home.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

I turned.

My father stood outside the door.

This time, he didn’t enter.

He waited.

“Can I come in?””

I looked at him.

A few months ago, I would have said yes immediately.

Now I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

He sat on the edge of the chair.

Not my bed.

Like he knew he didn’t have the right.

“I found something.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

A small key.

Old.

Silver.

He placed it on the table.

“Your mother gave this to me.””

I stared.

“Then why do you have it?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because she asked me to protect it.””

“What does it open?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“The basement.””

I frowned.

“We have a basement?””

“Yes.””

“Why have I never seen it?””

My father looked down.

“Because I sealed it after your mother died.””

“Why?””

His answer was barely a whisper.

“Because that’s where Claire kept the final evidence.””

I stood up.

“What evidence?””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of the answer.

“The evidence that shows who really tried to steal your inheritance.””

The key sat between us.

A piece of the truth.

A piece my father had hidden for years.

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the metal, a loud crash came from downstairs.

We both froze.

Then we heard a voice.

Vanessa.

Shouting.

“Richard!””

My father ran toward the door.

I followed.

When we reached the hallway, we saw Vanessa standing near the staircase.

In her hand was a piece of paper.

Her face was pale.

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“I know who Lily’s real legal guardian was supposed to be.””

Daniel stepped out of the study.

“What did you find?””

Vanessa slowly lifted the paper.

Her hands were shaking.

“Claire changed the guardianship agreement before she died.””

My father froze.

“Who did she name?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Someone who was never supposed to let Richard raise Lily alone.””
