Chapter 6: The Secret My Own Family Hid

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The message remained glowing on Rebecca’s phone.

Three words.

*Ask your mother.*

I read them again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to understand them.

My mother.

Not Eleanor.

Not Daniel’s family.

Mine.

The person who sent the message wanted me to believe my own family was connected to this.

But that was impossible.

My mother had been gone for years.

She wasn’t part of my life anymore.

She wasn’t part of the Whitmore family.

She wasn’t part of anything.

I looked at Jonathan.

“That’s a mistake.””

He didn’t answer.

“Jonathan.””

His eyes stayed on the phone.

“Ava…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“They’re trying to scare me.””

Rebecca slowly picked up her phone.

“They know something.””

I looked at her.

“How would they know about my mother?””

Nobody answered.

And that was the answer.

Someone knew.

Someone knew more about me than they should.

The room suddenly felt unsafe again.

Every wall.

Every door.

Every shadow.

It felt like the entire world had become a place where secrets were waiting to hurt me.

Jonathan walked toward the window and looked outside.

“We need to leave.””

I stared at him.

“Again?””

“Yes.””

“I’m tired of running.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But I couldn’t stop.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up one day and realize your entire life was built on things people hid from you.””

Jonathan didn’t argue.

Because he understood.

Maybe not my pain.

But the feeling of betrayal.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Ava.””

I looked at her.

“Daniel didn’t want you to know these things because he wanted to protect you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My hand moved over my stomach.

“But nobody asked what I wanted.””

Silence.

That was the truth I had been avoiding.

Daniel loved me.

I knew that.

But love could still hurt when it came wrapped in secrets.

I looked at the envelope Rebecca brought.

“What’s inside?””

She hesitated.

“Something Daniel found.””

“About my mother?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

“You don’t know?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“He told me not to open it.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because he said the information inside belonged to you.””

My heart beat faster.

Daniel had left me another piece of the puzzle.

Another secret.

Another choice.

I took the envelope.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

But there was no doubt.

The handwriting belonged to Daniel.

My Ava.

Just those two words almost broke me.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not a document.

Not a contract.

A photograph.

I looked down.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of my mother.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was a man.

A man I had seen before.

Only once.

At Daniel’s funeral.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Jonathan took the photo.

His face changed.

“You know him?””

I asked.

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Jonathan looked at me.

“That’s Richard Whitmore.””

Daniel’s father.

My breathing stopped.

“Daniel’s father died five years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is he in a photo with my mother?””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no easy answer.

The world I knew was breaking apart piece by piece.

My mother.

The Whitmores.

Daniel.

All connected.

But how?

Rebecca sat down.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“Of course there is.””

She accepted the bitterness in my voice.

“Daniel spent months researching the history between your family and his.””

“My family?””

She nodded.

“He believed the connection started long before he met you.””

I looked at the photo again.

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at Jonathan.

Then back at me.

“Because Daniel discovered your mother and his father knew each other.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“My mother never mentioned him.””

“Maybe she had a reason.””

I stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“My mother wasn’t like that.””

I stopped.

Because the sentence sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

I had said the same thing about Eleanor.

My mother was kind.

My mother was honest.

My mother would never hide something important from me.

But the truth was…

I didn’t really know.

Not anymore.

My mother died when I was twenty-three.

After that, I buried myself in work.

Then Daniel came into my life.

He became my home.

My family.

I had spent years avoiding the empty spaces my mother left behind.

Maybe because I was afraid of what I would find there.

Jonathan placed the photo on the table.

“Daniel wanted to meet with your mother.””

My head lifted.

“What?””

“Before he died.””

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

“Did he?””

Jonathan looked down.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because she refused.””

The room went silent.

My mother refused to meet my husband.

Why?

Rebecca opened her bag again.

“There’s another reason Daniel wanted to speak with her.””

She pulled out a small notebook.

“He found this in his father’s old office.””

I recognized the cover immediately.

“Where did he get that?””

“From the Whitmore archives.””

Jonathan opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Names.

Dates.

And one name repeated over and over.

My mother’s.

I stared.

“What does it say?””

Jonathan flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“Ava…”

“What?””

He turned the notebook toward me.

There was one sentence written clearly.

A sentence that looked like it had been written years ago.

*The child must never know the truth about her father.*

My heart stopped.

“The child?””

I whispered.

Jonathan looked at me.

“Yes.””

Rebecca’s voice was quiet.

“Daniel believed it was about you.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

The word barely came out.

“No, that’s impossible.””

But nobody said it was.

Nobody comforted me.

Because they knew.

The evidence was there.

My entire life had a missing chapter.

A chapter someone had worked very hard to erase.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Again.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something inside me told me I needed to.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only breathing.

Then a woman spoke.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

A voice I never thought I would hear again.

“Ava?””

My hand covered my mouth.

“Mom?””

Jonathan and Rebecca froze.

The voice on the phone trembled.

“My God…”

I could hear tears.

“You finally found out.””

I couldn’t speak.

My mother was alive.

Or at least…

Someone who sounded like her was.

“Where are you?”” I whispered.

A long pause.

Then:

“I don’t have much time.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

Another pause.

Then my mother said:

“Daniel was right to be afraid.””

I felt the room spin.

“What are you talking about?””

Her voice became desperate.

“Ava, listen to me carefully.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who is Richard Whitmore?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirms everything.

Then my mother whispered:

“He was the man who destroyed our family.””

My breathing stopped.

“And Daniel?””

Her voice broke.

“He was the man who finally discovered the truth.””

A noise came from her end of the call.

A door opening.

Someone entering.

My mother gasped.

“Ava, you need to leave—”

The call cut off.

I stared at the phone.

“Mom?””

Nothing.

I called again.

No answer.

Then a message appeared.

Not from my mother.

From the same unknown number.

*You were warned.*

May you like

A second message followed.

*Now you’ll learn why Daniel never told you who your father was.*
