Chapter 5: The Truth She Buried for Fourteen Years

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the part Marcus couldn’t understand.

Not the accusation.

Not the secret daughter.

Not even the payments.

The silence.

A person who had nothing to hide would fight.

They would explain.

They would defend themselves.

But Vanessa just stood there, frozen, as if every possible answer would make things worse.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel was still on the line.

“Marcus?””

He looked down at the screen.

“I’ll call you back.””

“Please don’t wait too long,” Daniel said quietly.

“Emma deserves to know what happens next.””

Marcus ended the call.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The parking lot was full of ordinary sounds.

Cars starting.

Shopping carts rolling.

People laughing as they walked by.

But for Marcus, everything felt unreal.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Get in the car.””

She swallowed.

“Marcus—”

“Get in the car.””

His voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Vanessa walked toward the passenger seat.

Nia followed slowly.

Marcus opened the back door for her.

“You can sit here.””

Nia looked at him.

“Are you mad at me?””

The question stopped him.

Marcus’s expression softened immediately.

“No.””

“But I told you.””

“Yes.””

“And now everything is bad.””

Marcus crouched down so they were eye level.

“Nia, listen to me.””

She looked at him.

“You telling me the truth did not make anything bad.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want to ruin your marriage.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You didn’t.””

“But if I didn’t say anything, maybe—”

“No.””

He gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

“You don’t carry responsibility for someone else’s choices.””

Nia looked down.

“I just wanted shoes.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“I know.””

Those two words carried more pain than anything else.

Because he knew.

His daughter had never asked for much.

She had just learned not to.

Inside the car, nobody spoke for several minutes.

Vanessa sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window.

Marcus drove home slowly.

Not because he was calm.

Because he needed time.

Time to understand.

Time to stop himself from saying something he couldn’t take back.

When they arrived, Nia went upstairs.

Marcus watched until she disappeared.

Then he closed the front door.

The house felt different.

Same walls.

Same furniture.

Same pictures hanging in the hallway.

But everything looked like a stranger’s home.

Vanessa stood in the living room.

“Marcus.””

He didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

He turned around.

“You think I’m just angry?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t know what else to call it.””

“I don’t either.””

He walked toward the kitchen.

“The woman I married had a child.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“She gave up custody.””

“Yes.””

“She hid it from me.””

“Yes.””

“And she took money from our account every month to pay someone connected to that secret.””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Tears fell down her face.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

He pointed toward the stairs.

“Mistakes are buying the wrong size shoes.””

His voice cracked.

“This is fourteen years of decisions.””

Vanessa sat down.

“I was young.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Being young explains why you were scared. It doesn’t explain why you kept running.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

“How were you going to fix fourteen years?””

“I don’t know.””

That honesty surprised him.

For once, she wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t changing the subject.

She was just admitting she didn’t know.

Marcus sat across from her.

“Tell me what happened.””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“The truth.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“You want everything?””

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“Then you need to know who I was before I met you.””

Marcus waited.

“When I was nineteen, I had Emma.””

She looked toward the window.

“I thought I was ready.””

“You weren’t?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I loved her. I did. But I was scared all the time.””

Marcus listened.

“My mother helped me. She said I needed to finish school and get stable.””

“And you agreed?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“Emma’s father left before she was born.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“So you were alone.””

“Yes.””

“But that still doesn’t explain custody.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled again.

“Because I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

She took a shaky breath.

“I chose to leave.””

The words sounded painful even for her.

Marcus stared.

“You chose?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because I met someone.””

Marcus felt something cold move through him.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus already knew.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa nodded.

The room went silent.

“You left your daughter because of another relationship?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa stood.

“I didn’t leave because of him.””

She walked toward the window.

“I left because I thought I was giving Emma a better life.””

Marcus watched her.

“My mother had money. Stability. A house. Everything I didn’t have.””

“And you?””

“I thought I was the problem.””

The anger in Marcus’s face softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

Just changed.

Vanessa continued.

“I was nineteen. I was struggling. I was depressed.

I was working two jobs. I couldn’t give her the childhood I wanted.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“So you signed custody over.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

“Nia.””

Marcus followed her gaze.

“What does Nia have to do with this?””

“When I met you, I wanted a fresh start.””

Marcus looked hurt.

“A fresh start where your daughter didn’t exist?””

Vanessa flinched.

“I know how it sounds.””

“Because it sounds like you erased her.””

“I didn’t erase her.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa had no answer.

The silence returned.

Marcus looked away.

“What about Daniel?””

Vanessa sat back down.

“Daniel was involved because…”

She stopped.

“Because what?””

“He was Emma’s father.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

Marcus felt like he had been hit again.

“Daniel is Emma’s father?””

“Yes.””

“Does he know?””

“Yes.””

“And you still stayed in contact with him?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

Vanessa started crying again.

“Yes.””

Marcus stood.

He walked away.

He needed distance.

Because suddenly the payments made sense.

The secrecy made sense.

But understanding something didn’t make it hurt less.

“You had so many chances.””

“I know.””

“So many.””

“I know.””

“And every time, you chose not to tell me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I was afraid you would leave.””

Marcus turned back.

“And now?””

She looked at him.

“Now I don’t know.””

The honesty was painful.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Nia was standing there.

She had heard enough.

Her face was pale.

Vanessa stood quickly.

“Nia—”

But Nia interrupted.

“Does Emma hate you?””

Nobody moved.

The question was unexpected.

Vanessa stared at her.

“I don’t know.””

Nia walked down slowly.

“Does she know you have another daughter?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Does she know about us?””

“No.””

Nia looked confused.

“Then why did you choose me?””

The question broke Vanessa.

“What?””

Nia’s voice trembled.

“You chose Dad and me.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“But you didn’t choose Emma.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He knew Nia was asking the question everyone was thinking.

Vanessa had no easy answer.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was wrong.””

Nia looked at her.

“That’s it?””

Vanessa started crying.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“That’s not all.””

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Nia.

“There is something else.””

Marcus went still.

“What?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Her hands trembled.

“The reason I lost custody…”

She swallowed.

“It wasn’t just because I was young.””

Marcus waited.

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“Emma’s grandmother didn’t take her from me.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“I gave her up because…”

Her voice broke.

“Because Emma got hurt while she was with me.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Nia covered her mouth.

May you like

Vanessa whispered the words that had been hidden for fourteen years.

“And I was afraid everyone would know it was my fault.””
