Chapter 1: The Empty Chair
“I want to sit with Daddy.””
Zoe said it softly, but Vanessa heard every word.
The little girl stood in the hallway wearing a yellow party dress with tiny white flowers sewn around the collar. Her shoes were slightly too big, and the straps clicked against the marble floor every time she moved.
In both hands, she carried a small pink plate.
On it sat three pieces of chicken, a spoonful of mashed potatoes, and a strawberry Grace had saved for dessert.
Upstairs, the family dinner had already begun.
Zoe had been waiting all afternoon for it.
Her father had promised.
Just that morning, Marcus had crouched beside her before leaving for work and straightened the ribbon in her hair.
“Tonight is family dinner,” he had said, smiling.
“You’re sitting next to Daddy.””
“Really?””
“Really.””
Zoe had hugged his neck.
Now she looked toward the dining room stairs.
Vanessa stepped in front of her.
The sound of her heels stopped sharply.
“What are you doing?”” Vanessa asked.
Zoe blinked.
“Daddy said I could sit with him.””
Vanessa glanced at the plate.
Then at the little yellow dress.
Her expression hardened.
“Your father says a lot of things.””
Zoe lowered her eyes.
“I want to sit with Daddy.””
“I heard you.””
Vanessa reached down.
Her fingers closed around Zoe’s wrist.
“Come on.””
Zoe stumbled.
“My plate—”
“Take it.””
Zoe hurried after her, clutching the plate against her chest with one hand while Vanessa pulled her toward the back staircase.
The warm smell of roast beef faded behind them.
The kitchen grew colder.
The elegant dining room upstairs had crystal glasses, polished silverware, and candles glowing against the dark windows.
Down here, there was only fluorescent light, stainless steel counters, and the low hum of a refrigerator.
Grace was standing near the sink when Vanessa pushed open the kitchen door.
She turned immediately.
“Mrs. Cole?””
Vanessa did not answer.
She pulled Zoe toward the small chair beside the servants’ counter.
“Sit.””
Zoe looked around.
“Where?””
“Here.””
“But Daddy—”
Vanessa shoved the chair backward with one hand.
“Sit down.””
Zoe sat.
Her feet did not reach the floor.
The little plate shook in her hands.
Vanessa pointed toward the leftovers.
“You eat where you belong.””
Grace froze.
“Mrs. Cole, dinner is still being served upstairs.””
Vanessa turned slowly.
“And?””
Grace swallowed.
“Mr. Cole asked for Zoe.””
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“Then tell him she was tired.””
Zoe looked up.
“I’m not tired.””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“Did I ask you?””
Zoe pressed her lips together.
“No.””
“Then eat.””
Vanessa walked away.
Her footsteps disappeared toward the pantry.
Zoe stared at the food on her plate.
The chicken was cold.
The mashed potatoes had formed a dry skin across the top.
A tiny tear rolled down her cheek and landed on the edge of the plate.
Grace hurried over.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
She knelt beside Zoe.
“Don’t cry.””
“I want Daddy.””
“I know.””
“He promised.””
Grace looked toward the doorway.
“I know he did.””
Zoe wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“Am I bad?””
Grace’s face tightened.
“No.””
“Then why can't I sit there?””
“You did nothing wrong.””
Vanessa suddenly called from across the kitchen.
“Grace.””
Grace stood.
“Yes, ma’am?””
“Those dishes aren't going to wash themselves.””
Grace looked at Zoe.
Zoe looked back.
For a second, neither moved.
Then Grace walked to the sink.
Zoe picked up her spoon.
She tried to eat.
The first bite was cold.
She swallowed anyway.
Upstairs, Marcus laughed at something his brother had said.
Then he glanced toward the empty chair beside him.
His smile faded.
“Where’s Zoe?””
Vanessa’s mother, who sat across from him, shrugged.
“I thought she was with you.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa calmly lifted her wineglass.
“She wanted to eat downstairs.””
Marcus frowned.
“Downstairs?””
“She was being difficult.””
“She asked to sit with me.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Marcus, she's tired. I didn't think interrupting dinner was necessary.””
Marcus pushed his chair back.
“I'll check on her.””
Vanessa reached for his arm.
“You don't need to.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why not?””
“She’s fine.””
Marcus pulled his arm away.
“I asked where my daughter is.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Grace’s footsteps sounded faintly from below.
Marcus was already moving toward the stairs.
Vanessa stood quickly.
“Marcus—”
He ignored her.
He took the steps two at a time.
The kitchen door swung open.
And he stopped.
Zoe was sitting beside the servants’ counter in her yellow dress.
Her little plate was in front of her.
She was crying silently.
Grace stood nearby with a towel in her hands.
Marcus stared.
For one long second, nobody moved.
Then his voice came out dangerously quiet.
“Zoe?””
The little girl looked up.
Her face crumpled.
“Daddy!””
She slid off the chair and ran to him.
Marcus dropped to his knees.
He caught her against his chest.
“What happened?””
Zoe buried her face in his shirt.
“I wanted to sit with you.””
“I know.””
“Vanessa said…”
Marcus looked toward his wife.
Vanessa was already walking toward them.
“She wanted to eat here,” Vanessa said smoothly.
“I didn't make her do anything.””
Zoe lifted her wet face.
“No.””
Vanessa stiffened.
Zoe pointed at her.
“She grabbed me.””
Marcus slowly stood.
His jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
“She is upset,” Vanessa said.
“She doesn't know what she's saying.””
Grace finally stepped forward.
“She does.””
Vanessa snapped her head toward her.
“Grace.””
Grace's voice trembled.
“I saw what happened.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What happened?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“There is no reason to turn this into some dramatic misunderstanding.””
Marcus did not look away from Grace.
“Tell me.””
Grace opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Her eyes shifted toward the corner of the kitchen.
Marcus followed her gaze.
A small black camera was mounted above the pantry door.
He stared at it.
Then back at Vanessa.
“The kitchen camera.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus walked toward the monitor on the wall.
His fingers hovered over the controls.
“You forgot something,” he said quietly.
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus pressed a button.
The screen lit up.
May you like
And there, frozen in the recording, was Zoe in her yellow dress—
with Vanessa’s hand wrapped tightly around her wrist.
