Chapter 3: The Secret My Wife Buried
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Harrison, don’t trust your wife.*
Then the second line appeared.
*She didn’t tell you everything about what happened that night.*
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The kitchen around me became strangely quiet.
The refrigerator hummed.
The clock above the sink ticked.
My father stood across from me with a cold expression I had never seen before.
Meredith stood beside the counter, pale and frozen.
And somehow, in the middle of all that chaos, the phone in my hand felt heavier than anything else.
Because one question kept repeating in my head.
*What night?*
I looked at Meredith.
Not my father.
Her.
She saw the question in my eyes before I said a word.
“Harrison…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
That was all it took.
Not an answer.
Not a confession.
Just the sound of fear in her voice.
My father noticed too.
His eyes moved between us.
“Who sent that?””
I didn’t answer.
“Who sent the message?””
Still nothing.
Richard stepped closer.
“Harrison, listen to me. Someone is trying to create a problem.””
I looked at him.
“A problem?””
My voice came out colder than I expected.
“My daughter has bruises on her body.””
His jaw tightened.
“And now you’re getting anonymous messages.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re going to believe some stranger over your own father?””
I stared at him.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
For a moment, his face softened.
Then I finished.
“I’m going to believe my daughter.””
The softness vanished.
My father looked away.
That small movement told me everything.
Meredith suddenly spoke.
“Harrison.””
I turned.
“Can we talk upstairs?””
I looked at her.
“Now?””
She nodded.
“Please.””
Richard let out a short laugh.
“Of course.””
We both looked at him.
He crossed his arms.
“Family meeting without me?””
I walked toward him.
Not close enough to threaten him.
Close enough for him to understand.
“You’re leaving.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“Excuse me?””
“You’re leaving this house.””
For the first time all afternoon, Richard looked genuinely surprised.
“Harrison—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
But I didn’t stop.
“You are not going anywhere near Chloe.””
The kitchen went silent.
Richard’s face hardened.
“You’re making a serious mistake.””
“Maybe.””
I held his stare.
“But it’s a mistake I can live with.””
He looked at Meredith.
Like he expected her to defend him.
She didn’t.
That seemed to hurt him more than my words.
He grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair.
At the doorway, he stopped.
“You should be careful who you trust.””
The sentence was quiet.
Almost gentle.
But it didn’t sound like advice.
It sounded like a warning.
Then he walked out.
I waited until the front door closed.
Only then did I realize my hands were shaking.
Meredith walked toward me.
“Harrison…”
“Upstairs.””
She nodded.
Neither of us spoke as we climbed the stairs.
When we reached our bedroom, I closed the door.
The same way I had closed Chloe’s.
Except this time, I wasn’t protecting a child from a secret.
I was forcing an adult to finally face one.
I turned around.
“What happened that night?””
Meredith sat down on the edge of the bed.
She looked exhausted.
“I knew you would ask.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She pressed her fingers against her forehead.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
A tear appeared in her eyes.
“I was scared.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t understand.
“Scared of what?””
She looked up.
“Losing everything.””
I stared at her.
“You mean losing your marriage?””
She looked away.
“No.””
That answer caught me off guard.
“Then what?””
She swallowed.
“Losing the family.””
I felt anger rising again.
“The family?””
I stepped closer.
“Meredith, Chloe was hurt.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew she was hurt.””
She covered her mouth.
Tears fell silently.
“I know.””
The admission landed harder than I expected.
I turned away.
Because looking at her made it worse.
“How long?””
“Since February.””
The same month Chloe said.
My chest tightened.
“You knew since February?””
“Yes.””
I looked back.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
She shook her head.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
“Every day.””
Her voice broke.
“Every day I wanted to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because of what happened that night.””
I waited.
Finally.
She took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t just hurt Chloe.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He threatened me.””
The room felt colder.
“What did he say?””
Meredith wiped her face.
“He said if I told you, he would make sure everyone knew I was the problem.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“He said you would choose your daughter, and I would lose you.””
I stared at her.
“I would never leave you because you protected Chloe.””
“I know that now.””
The words bothered me.
“Now?””
She closed her eyes.
“Back then, I wasn’t thinking clearly.””
“Meredith.””
She looked at me.
“I was scared.””
I sat down across from her.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
For a moment, she didn’t move.
Then she began.
“It was February 14th.””
Valentine’s Day.
I remembered.
That night.
The dinner reservation we canceled because Chloe had a school project.
The night Meredith said she was tired.
The night my father had come over unexpectedly.
“I was downstairs cleaning up after dinner,” she said.
“Chloe was upstairs practicing piano.””
My stomach twisted.
“Your father was here?””
She nodded.
“He said he wanted to help her practice.””
I looked away.
Of course.
He had always used kindness as a disguise.
“What happened next?””
Meredith’s voice became smaller.
“About twenty minutes later, I heard Chloe crying.””
I clenched my jaw.
“I ran upstairs.””
She stopped.
“Then?””
“Your father was in the room.””
“Doing what?””
“He was standing over her.””
My breathing changed.
“And Chloe?””
“She was on the floor.””
The room spun.
“He said she was being disrespectful.””
I stared at Meredith.
“What did you do?””
“I grabbed his arm.””
Her voice shook.
“I told him to leave.””
“And?””
“He looked at me like I was nothing.””
She paused.
“Then he said something I’ll never forget.””
“What?””
Meredith looked directly at me.
“He said, ‘You have no idea what I’m capable of.’”
A chill moved through me.
“What happened to Chloe?””
“He said she fell.””
“Did you believe him?””
She didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
I stood up.
“She told me you knew.””
Meredith started crying harder.
“I know.””
“She thought you didn’t believe her.””
“I did believe her.””
“Then why?””
“Because I was trying to find proof.””
I stopped.
“Proof?””
She nodded.
“I knew if I accused your father without anything, he would destroy us.””
“He already hurt her.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
Silence filled the room.
Then I heard a small sound.
A knock.
We both froze.
The bedroom door opened slightly.
Chloe stood there.
Her face was pale.
“How much did you hear?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me.
She walked inside slowly.
“Mom?””
Meredith stood immediately.
“Sweetheart…”
Chloe looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””
Meredith broke.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Chloe shook her head.
“You said you would protect me.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
Meredith covered her face.
“I know.””
“You promised.””
“I know.””
Chloe looked at me.
“Dad?””
I moved toward her.
“Yes?””
“Can we leave?””
I looked at my daughter.
“Leave where?””
“Anywhere.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Somewhere he can’t find us.””
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from the same unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
There was a photo attached.
A photo of my father standing outside our house.
Taken only seconds ago.
Below it was a message.
*You’re looking for the wrong person.*
Then another message appeared.
*Ask your wife what happened before Chloe got hurt.*
I looked at Meredith.
She looked at the phone.
And the color drained from her face.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
Something worse than what she had already told me.
Something she had buried.
And when she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“Harrison…”
May you like
I waited.
“What I didn’t tell you is that Chloe wasn’t the first person your father hurt.””
