Chapter 8: The Woman in My Name

By 7:00 a.m. Saturday, I had spoken to three lawyers, two bank investigators, and the head of security at my company.

Nobody had a simple answer.

Someone had used my identity to complete a verification process.

Someone had accessed documents that were supposed to remain private.

And someone had convinced a bank that I had personally authorized a seventy-five-million-dollar loan.

I sat in Rebecca's office while she reviewed the latest report.

“This is becoming more serious than a forged signature,” she said.

“How?””

“Because the bank believes a person appeared in connection with your identity verification.””

I leaned forward.

“Did they see me?””

“No. They have a photograph.””

She turned her laptop toward me.

The image showed a woman standing in front of a verification camera.

She wore a dark blazer.

Her hair was shoulder-length.

Her face was partially obscured by the angle.

But I recognized the necklace.

A small silver pendant shaped like a star.

My breath caught.

“That's Evelyn's necklace.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Are you certain?””

“She wore it at Christmas. I remember because Olivia asked to touch it.””

Rebecca enlarged the image.

The woman had similar height and build to Evelyn.

But the face was difficult to identify.

“Can you prove it?””

“Not yet.””

Rebecca nodded.

“We'll request the original footage.””

I stared at the screen.

“Why would Evelyn impersonate me?””

“Possibly to complete the verification process. But we need evidence before drawing conclusions.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Tell me you found something.””

“We've identified the location where the verification took place.””

“Where?””

“A private office belonging to Harper, Cole and Associates.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She immediately started writing.

“Can you obtain the visitor records?””

“I'm working on it. But Sarah, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The receptionist remembers the woman.””

“Who did she say it was?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Evelyn Mitchell.””

I closed my eyes.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Did the receptionist say Evelyn presented herself as Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“Did she have any identification?””

“She used a copy of Sarah's passport.””

I felt sick.

The passport Marcus had admitted his father took.

I looked at Rebecca.

“They used my passport.””

She nodded.

“Then we need to report the identity theft immediately.””

At noon, Evelyn called.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

“Sarah!””

Her voice sounded unusually cheerful.

“Evelyn.””

“Darling, I've been trying to reach you.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“I think we should put this unpleasant situation behind us.””

“What situation?””

“Oh, you know. The birthday party. The painting. All these unnecessary legal discussions.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She gestured for me to keep the conversation going.

“Why are you calling?””

Evelyn sighed.

“Your father-in-law is under enormous pressure. Marcus is barely sleeping. Everyone is suffering.””

I almost laughed.

“Are you calling to apologize?””

There was a pause.

Then she said, “Well, I suppose I could have handled things differently.””

“Differently?””

“I was upset.””

“You slapped me.””

“Sarah, please don't start again.””

“You destroyed an eighteen-million-dollar painting.””

“It was an accident.””

I closed my eyes.

“No, Evelyn. You stepped on it twice.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Fine. What do you want from me?””

“An explanation.””

“For what?””

“Why did you use my passport to verify a loan agreement?””

Silence.

Long, uncomfortable silence.

Then she said:

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Harper, Cole and Associates has a recording.””

Another pause.

“You've been speaking to people who don't understand our family.””

“I understand enough.””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Sarah, you need to be careful about what you accuse people of.””

“Are you threatening me?””

“I'm trying to help you.””

“Then tell me why you pretended to be me.””

She suddenly became angry.

“Because your husband was trying to save his family!””

I sat completely still.

Rebecca's eyes met mine.

I didn't speak.

Evelyn continued.

“You think you're the only person who has sacrificed something? Robert built an entire business. Marcus has spent years trying to protect it.””

“With my money?””

“With resources that should have been shared in a marriage!””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Did Marcus tell you that I had agreed to the loan?””

“He said you would understand.””

“I never agreed.””

“Well, you should have.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She wrote two words on a piece of paper.

Keep talking.

I asked, “Did Robert ask you to use my passport?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she answered.

“He said it was necessary to complete the paperwork.””

“Did you know it was illegal?””

“I didn't know anything about the details!””

“But you knew you weren't me.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was helping my son.””

“By pretending to be his wife?””

“Don't you dare judge me!””

I sat back.

“Thank you, Evelyn.””

“What?””

“For confirming what happened.””

I ended the call.

Rebecca immediately contacted the legal team.

“We have an admission,” she said.

I nodded.

But I wasn't relieved.

Because Evelyn had sounded frightened.

Not ashamed.

Frightened.

And I suspected there was something even worse behind the entire arrangement.

At 3:15 p.m., I received an unexpected visitor.

It was Robert Mitchell.

He stood outside my office with two security guards behind him.

Daniel met him at reception.

“Mr. Mitchell, do you have an appointment?””

“I don't need one.””

“Then I'm afraid you'll have to leave.””

Robert looked past him.

“Sarah!””

I walked out of my office.

“What do you want?””

He stepped forward.

“We need to talk.””

“Everything goes through my lawyer.””

“This concerns your children.””

My expression changed.

“What about them?””

He lowered his voice.

“Olivia and Noah are my grandchildren. I have every right to see them.””

“You have no right to use them to pressure me.””

Robert shook his head.

“I'm not threatening you.””

“Then explain why you're here.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Can we speak privately?””

“No,” I replied.

He exhaled.

“Fine. Your husband is in trouble.””

“I know.””

“No, Sarah. You don't understand. Victor has become dangerous.””

“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before involving him in my marriage.””

Robert's face hardened.

“You have no idea what we were dealing with.””

“Explain it.””

He looked around.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Mitchell Lifestyle Holdings was facing bankruptcy. We had borrowed heavily to finance several developments. When the market collapsed, we lost most of our available cash.””

“And you decided to use my assets.””

“We thought the loan would solve everything.””

“Without asking me.””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“Marcus made a mistake.””

“Your son made several.””

He stared at me.

“Sarah, if the loan is cancelled, Victor will come after us.””

“That's your problem.””

“He has people who can make things difficult.””

I stepped closer.

“Are you telling me Victor has threatened my children?””

Robert looked away.

That was enough.

I turned to Daniel.

“Call security.””

Robert raised his hand.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“Did you arrange for someone to approach my children?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Did you ask anyone to follow them?””

“No.””

“Then why are you afraid of what Victor might do?””

Robert took a breath.

“Because he knows where they go to school.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Mitchell, explain yourself.””

Robert shook his head.

“I didn't tell him anything.””

I stared at him.

“Who did?””

He didn't answer.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face went pale.

He answered.

“Victor?””

A man's voice came through.

Robert turned away.

“Not now.””

I watched his expression change.

Then he said, “No. She hasn't agreed.””

A pause.

“I told you I would handle it.””

Another pause.

Robert looked at me.

Then he whispered:

“You said you wouldn't involve the children.””

The call ended.

I stepped toward him.

“What did he just say?””

Robert put his phone away.

“Nothing.””

“Robert!””

He finally looked at me.

“Victor wants you at the Monday meeting.””

“I know.””

“He wants you to sign the acquisition agreement.””

“I will never sign it.””

Robert swallowed.

“Then he says he will expose something about your company.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He claims your company has been involved in illegal transactions.””

I stared at him.

“That's a lie.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you worried?””

Robert's expression became grim.

“Because he has documents.””

That evening, Rebecca and Daniel met me at my home.

We sat around the dining table.

Daniel had brought the company's financial records.

Rebecca had obtained preliminary copies of the disputed verification footage.

I watched the video again.

The woman entered the law office at 10:14 a.m.

She removed her coat.

She handed over an identification document.

Then she signed several pages.

It was Evelyn.

There was no doubt.

“Can we use this?”” I asked.

“Yes,” Rebecca replied.

“It's important evidence.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“There's also a connection between Blackridge Partners and an old acquisition.””

I looked at him.

“Which one?””

“Your first major property portfolio.””

I remembered it immediately.

The Riverside development.

It had transformed my company.

I had purchased the distressed properties, renovated them, and eventually sold several buildings to institutional investors.

Daniel continued.

“Victor Hale's investment group attempted to acquire part of that portfolio before you did.””

I frowned.

“I remember the offer.””

“He was rejected.””

“Why?””

“Because the title records were incomplete.””

Daniel turned another page.

“Sarah, we discovered something. A portion of the original land was transferred through a company linked to Robert Mitchell.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your father-in-law had a financial interest in the property before you acquired it.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She nodded slowly.

“This could explain why Robert was interested in your business long before your marriage.””

Daniel continued.

“There's a possibility the Mitchell family knew the Riverside portfolio would become extremely valuable.””

I leaned back.

“Are you saying they deliberately introduced Marcus to me because of that property?””

“We can't prove that yet.””

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

I opened it.

The document was an old photograph of me at the Riverside acquisition signing.

Standing beside me was a man I recognized immediately.

Robert Mitchell.

But I had never remembered meeting him at that event.

I enlarged the photograph.

On the back of the scanned image was a handwritten note.

Phase One completed. Sarah has acquired the Riverside assets. Phase Two begins after the wedding.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Rebecca leaned over.

“Sarah?””

I pointed at the note.

She read it.

Then she looked at Daniel.

Neither of them spoke.

Another email arrived.

This one contained a message.

You think the Mitchell family chose you because you were wealthy. They chose you because of what you inherited.

I stared at the screen.

“What did I inherit?””

Daniel looked confused.

“Your father left you the original Riverside development rights.””

I slowly turned toward him.

“What?””

He opened his laptop.

“Sarah, your father owned a controlling interest in the original land company before he died. You inherited the rights through his estate.””

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

“My father never told me.””

“He may not have known how valuable they would become.””

Rebecca examined the old photograph again.

“Who sent this email?””

I checked the sender.

There was no name.

Only a temporary address.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke immediately.

“Sarah, my name is Daniel Foster.””

The former business partner's name.

The man whose wife had died.

“I've been trying to reach you for three years.””

I sat down.

“Why?””

“Because I finally found the person who arranged the original fraud.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

He answered:

“Your father-in-law didn't simply want your money. He wanted the Riverside land your father left you.””

I stared at Rebecca.

May you like

Daniel Foster continued.

“And I have the original contract proving your marriage was part of the acquisition plan.””
