Chapter 15 - THE PRICE OF TRUTH

The weeks that followed were a blur of statements, hearings, and legal proceedings.

Julian was formally charged. Kidnapping. Extortion. Fraud. Conspiracy. Evidence tampering. And ultimately… manslaughter in the death of Richard. The ledger, the letters, and Clara’s testimony made conviction certain. He would spend the rest of his life in prison.

David spent those days in quiet exhaustion. He visited Elena every morning. He sat with her, held her hand, listened as she told him stories about his real family—her parents, her childhood, the life they might have shared if Julian had never stolen him away.

Margaret visited too. She and Elena had begun building a relationship—slow, careful, rooted in shared love for David. There was no jealousy now. Only relief. And gratitude.

One afternoon, David and I walked through the garden at the mansion. The same garden where everything had begun—where Rachel had let go of Margaret’s arm, where the truth had begun to unravel.

David stopped near the fountain. He looked up at the study window.

"He never told me," David said quietly. "Richard. He never told me any of it. He never said I wasn’t his."

"He couldn’t," I said. "Julian threatened Margaret. He threatened all of you. Richard stayed silent to protect the people he loved."

David nodded slowly.

"He wrote it all down instead. Hoping I would understand one day." He turned to me. "I do understand. He was weak. He made terrible choices. But he tried to fix it. In the end… he tried to fix it."

"He gave you the tools to save everyone," I said. "That is how he loved you."

David took my hand. He rested it gently on my stomach.

"I hope our child never has to face anything like this," he said. "I hope they never have to choose between family and truth."

"They will be strong," I said. "Like their father."

David managed a faint smile.

"Like their mother."

He looked out across the lawn.

"Elena wants to move back here. To the mansion. She says it feels like home. Even after everything."

"And Margaret?"

"Margaret said yes. She said this house has held too many secrets for too long. It is time to fill it with people who tell the truth." David squeezed my hand. "She wants Elena to have everything. The house. The company. The trust. Exactly as Richard wrote in the will."

"And you?" I asked.

David looked at me.

"I will stay. And I will help them. I will run the company. But I will not take what is not mine. Richard made that clear." He took a breath. "Everything belongs to Elena. She is the one who suffered. She is the one who was robbed. She deserves to be restored."

"And you?" I asked again.

May you like

David smiled.

"I have what matters. I have two mothers who love me. I have a family that was returned to me. I have you. And soon… a child." He pulled me close. "That is enough. More than enough."
