Chapter 7: The Friend Who Helped Build The Lie
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started to hurt.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I did.
That was the worst part.
The image was clear.
Too clear.
Grayson standing outside a small café downtown.
His hand holding another woman’s hand.
And that woman was not a stranger.
Not someone I had never met.
Not someone I could easily dismiss.
It was Olivia.
My best friend.
My maid of honor.
The woman who had helped me choose my wedding dress.
The woman who cried beside me while I wrote my vows.
The woman who stood behind me as I promised to love Grayson forever.
I sat on the edge of the bed, holding my phone.
The room was dark.
Grayson was asleep on the other side of the wall.
Or pretending to be.
I no longer trusted anything.
Not words.
Not smiles.
Not memories.
I opened the photograph again.
There was no timestamp.
No location.
Just the image.
A warning.
A message.
*If you want the truth about Grayson, meet me tomorrow. Come alone.*
I should have ignored it.
Every logical part of me said that.
It could be another trap.
Another person trying to manipulate me.
But after everything I had discovered, I knew one thing.
The truth was always hidden behind the people I trusted most.
So I replied.
*Where?*
The answer came seconds later.
*The old bookstore on Franklin Street. Noon.*
No explanation.
No name.
Just a meeting.
I put my phone down and looked at my wedding ring.
Three days ago, that ring represented a promise.
Now it felt like evidence.
The next morning, Grayson acted like nothing happened.
That almost impressed me.
Almost.
He walked into the kitchen wearing a gray sweater and smiled.
“Coffee?””
I looked at him.
“You’re making coffee?””
He smiled.
“Trying to be a good husband.””
A good husband.
The phrase felt almost insulting.
I watched him move around the kitchen.
He looked relaxed.
Comfortable.
Like he hadn’t spent the night knowing his wife discovered his secret plans.
Like he hadn’t been exposed.
“How did you sleep?”” he asked.
“Not well.””
His expression softened.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost asked:
Are you sorry because I’m hurt?
Or because I found out?
Instead, I took the coffee.
“Thank you.””
He sat across from me.
“Emma.””
“Yes?””
“I’ve been thinking.””
That sentence always meant trouble.
“About what?””
“Us.””
I waited.
“I don’t want this to become a fight.””
Interesting.
Not:
“I want to explain.””
Not:
“I want to fix this.””
A fight.
That was how he saw it.
A disagreement.
Not betrayal.
“I don’t either,” I said.
“Good.””
He reached across the table.
“I think we both said things we didn’t mean.””
I stared at him.
I hadn’t said anything.
He had.
But he needed me to share the blame.
People like Grayson hated standing alone.
“I need honesty,” I said.
“You have it.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“Do I?””
His hand stopped.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then he smiled sadly.
“Emma, if this is about my phone…”
“It is.””
“I already told you.””
“You gave me an explanation.””
“Yes.””
“You didn’t give me the truth.””
His jaw tightened.
I saw the anger.
Small.
Controlled.
But there.
“I don’t know what you want from me.””
I looked at him.
“I want you to stop acting like I’m the problem for asking questions.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
The conversation was over.
Not because we solved anything.
Because he realized I wasn’t going to stop.
At 11:45, I left the apartment.
“I’m meeting Olivia,” I said.
Grayson looked up.
A little too quickly.
“Olivia?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question was casual.
But his eyes weren’t.
“I need to talk to her.””
“About what?””
I smiled.
“Girl stuff.””
A weak answer.
But it was enough.
He laughed.
“Okay.””
I grabbed my coat.
As I walked toward the door, he said:
“Emma.””
I turned.
“Be careful.””
The words sounded caring.
But I heard the warning underneath.
Be careful.
Not because he cared.
Because he didn’t know what I knew.
The old bookstore on Franklin Street had barely changed in twenty years.
Dusty wooden shelves.
Old paper smell.
A bell above the door that sounded too loud whenever someone entered.
I arrived five minutes early.
I sat at the back table.
Waiting.
At noon exactly, someone walked in.
Not Olivia.
An older man.
I didn’t recognize him.
He looked around.
Then walked toward me.
“Emma?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
“My name is Robert Hale.””
He placed an envelope on the table.
“I was your grandmother’s attorney.””
My heart stopped.
“My grandmother’s attorney?””
He nodded.
“She asked me to contact you if certain conditions were met.””
“What conditions?””
He looked at me carefully.
“Your husband attempting to access protected assets.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
“We suspected.””
“How?””
He sat down.
“Your grandmother was very careful. She had concerns about your uncle.””
“Daniel.””
He nodded.
“She knew he was searching for ways to gain control over the family trust.””
“And Grayson?””
Robert looked at the envelope.
“Your grandmother didn’t know his name.””
That surprised me.
“Then how?””
“She knew someone might eventually be brought into your life.””
A chill moved through me.
“She planned for this?””
“She planned for the possibility.””
He pushed the envelope toward me.
Inside was a copy of a document.
A private investigation report.
My hands shook as I read.
The report listed dates.
Names.
Connections.
And there it was.
Grayson’s name.
But not the way I expected.
It wasn’t a recent connection.
It went back years.
Before he met me.
Before the charity event.
Before Daniel introduced us.
I looked up.
“How?””
Robert sighed.
“Your uncle had been monitoring potential opportunities.””
“Opportunities?””
He hesitated.
“People with access to valuable assets.””
I felt sick.
“He chose me.””
“Yes.””
“Because of my grandmother.””
“Yes.””
The room felt cold.
Then Robert said:
“There’s more.””
He removed another paper.
A photograph.
Not the one I received.
An older one.
Grayson.
Daniel.
And Olivia.
Together.
My fingers went numb.
“Olivia knew?””
Robert nodded.
“She was involved earlier than we realized.””
I looked at the photograph.
“How long?””
“Before your engagement.””
The words hit harder than anything.
Before my engagement.
Before I thought I was loved.
Before I believed I had found my future.
My best friend was already part of the plan.
“But why?””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know the full reason.””
I stared at him.
“Then find out.””
He looked surprised.
“You’re willing to investigate?””
I almost laughed.
“I think I deserve answers.””
For the first time in days, someone looked at me differently.
Not like a victim.
Not like a problem.
Like someone fighting back.
Robert nodded.
“I can help.””
I folded the documents carefully.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Olivia.
The timing was almost cruel.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice came immediately.
“Emma, where are you?””
I looked at Robert.
“I’m out.””
“You need to meet me.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Olivia whispered:
“Because Grayson is planning something tonight.””
I stood up.
“What?””
“He knows you’re suspicious.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How do you know?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because I was there when he told your uncle.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t speak.
Olivia’s voice cracked.
“Emma, I need you to listen to me.””
I closed my eyes.
The person who betrayed me was now asking me to trust her.
“I made a mistake.””
I said nothing.
“Emma, please.””
“What did you do?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I helped them create the plan.””
My breath caught.
“But I didn’t know how far they would go.””
I looked at the documents in front of me.
The photographs.
The evidence.
The years of lies.
“Why should I believe you?””
Her voice became desperate.
“Because tonight, Grayson is going to transfer the apartment documents.””
I froze.
“He thinks you’re too emotional to fight.””
A pause.
“And Emma…”
“Yes?””
“He’s not just trying to take the apartment.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
Her answer came quietly.
“He’s trying to make sure you can never challenge him afterward.””
The call ended.
I stood there, frozen.
Because suddenly the apartment didn’t matter.
The money didn’t matter.
The trust didn’t matter.
May you like
The real question was much darker.
What exactly was Grayson planning to do to make sure I stayed silent?
