Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN TRUTH

I stayed in Noah’s room that night. I dragged an armchair beside his bed and sat there through the darkness, never closing my eyes, listening for the slightest sound from outside. Vanessa remained in the guest wing of the house. I heard no doors open, no footsteps approach. But that silence felt heavier than any threat.
Just before dawn, I reached for my laptop. I plugged the USB drive into the port, my hand trembling slightly.
A single folder appeared on the screen, password protected.
I tried every date I could think of. Claire’s birthday. Our wedding anniversary. Noah’s birthday. The date she died. None worked.
I sat back, staring at the password prompt. Claire had known someone might come looking for this. She had hidden it inside Noah’s bear and locked it away behind a wall of encryption. She had been protecting something. Or protecting me.
Then I typed the name of the park where we had gotten engaged.
The folder opened.
Inside were documents. Bank statements. Email records. Scanned letters. And a single video file, dated three days before Claire passed away.
My breath caught. I clicked play.
Claire sat at her desk in our study, looking pale, her hair pulled back, her eyes tired but intensely serious. She looked directly into the camera lens.
“If you are watching this, then I am gone,” she began. Her voice was steady, but I could hear the tremor beneath it. “And someone has found the bear. Which means they know this exists. Adrian, listen to me very carefully. Do not trust the people I once called friends. Do not trust the partners I worked with. And above all else… be careful who you let into our home after I am gone.”
My throat tightened. I leaned closer to the screen.
“The company is in danger,” she continued. “Not from the outside. From within. There are men who have been siphoning funds, falsifying reports, using our name to cover deals that are dangerous and illegal. I found the records. I tried to speak to you about it, but they found out first. They know what I have.”
She paused, swallowing hard.
“They have threatened Noah, Adrian. They told me if I exposed them, they would take what matters most to me. So I hid this. I did not give it to the lawyers. I did not leave it in a safe. I hid it where no one would think to look—inside the one place they would never harm to search. Our son’s bear.”
Tears blurred my vision.
“If I die suddenly,” she said, her voice breaking, “do not believe it was natural causes. Do not accept any explanation that makes it seem like an accident. I was healthy. I was strong. And I was about to expose men who are very wealthy, very powerful, and completely without conscience. This drive contains everything. Names. Dates. Transactions. Evidence enough to bring them all down.”
She leaned forward, staring straight at me through the recording.
“Protect our son. Expose the truth. And Adrian… if a woman named Vanessa enters your life… be very careful. She is connected to them. She was sent to watch you. To find what I hid.”
The video ended.
I sat motionless for a very long time. Vanessa. Sent to watch me. Claire had known. She had suspected everything, even at the very end. She had left me this warning, buried inside a toy, knowing it might save our lives one day.
Vanessa hadn’t accidentally learned about the drive. She had been searching for it all along. Every moment of our relationship had been a lie. The romance. The engagement. The kindness she had pretended to show Noah. It had all been a ploy to get close, to find what Claire had hidden.
And she had grown impatient. That was why she had torn the bear apart. That was why she had locked Noah in the cage. She had stopped pretending.
I looked up as a soft sound came from the bedroom doorway. The handle turned slowly. Locked, from the inside.

A shadow moved beneath the door.
Vanessa stood out there. She had been listening.
