Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
I looked down at the photograph again.
Nia was younger in it. Her hair was shorter, and she wore the blue coat I remembered buying her during our first winter together.
The baby was wrapped in a white hospital blanket.
I turned the photograph over.
Four years earlier.
My wedding year.
I looked at Nia.
"Explain.""
She wiped her cheeks with both hands.
"Marcus, there's something you don't understand.""
"Then help me understand.""
Jordan shifted uncomfortably beside the dresser.
"I think you should sit down.""
I turned toward him.
"Don't tell me what I should do.""
He nodded and stepped back.
Nia reached for the photograph.
I pulled it away.
"No. You don't get to take this from me.""
"Marcus, please.""
"Was this before or after our wedding?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Before.""
"How long before?""
"Three months.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Three months before our wedding, you had a baby?""
"No.""
"Then whose baby is that?""
Nia pressed her lips together.
I felt my hands beginning to shake.
"Was the baby yours?""
She nodded.
The room seemed to tilt.
I took a step backward and grabbed the doorframe.
"You're telling me you had a child three months before marrying me?""
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
Her silence answered.
I stared at her.
We had spent four years building a life together. We had discussed children, bought furniture, planned vacations, and argued about which school district would be best when we eventually became parents.
I had told her everything about my past.
My mistakes.
My debts.
My fears.
But apparently, she had built our marriage around a secret.
"Where is the child now?"" I asked.
Nia started crying harder.
"Marcus, she's safe.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Jordan finally spoke.
"She's with her grandmother.""
I turned toward him.
"Why are you answering questions about my wife?""
He swallowed.
"Because I know what happened.""
I looked at Nia.
"How long has he known?""
She said nothing.
"How long?""
"Since before the wedding.""
My chest tightened.
Jordan had known.
He had known about the child while standing beside us at our wedding reception, smiling as I promised to love Nia for the rest of my life.
I remembered that evening.
Jordan had been there.
He had even raised a glass during the speeches.
I had shaken his hand.
I had thanked him for coming.
And all that time, he knew.
"You both watched me make a fool of myself," I whispered.
Nia stepped forward.
"That's not fair.""
"Not fair?""
"I was scared!""
"Of what?""
"Of losing you!""
I stared at her.
"So you decided to marry me without telling me you had a child?""
She covered her face.
"I didn't know how to explain it.""
I placed the photograph on the dresser.
"Start with the truth.""
Nia took a shaky breath.
"Her name is Lily.""
The name hit me harder than I expected.
Lily.
A real child.
A little girl who existed somewhere in the world while I had been planning a future with her mother.
"How old is she?"" I asked.
"Four.""
I closed my eyes.
Four years.
She was almost exactly the age of our marriage.
"Who is her father?""
Nia looked at Jordan.
That was enough to make my stomach turn.
"Don't look at him. Look at me.""
She did.
Then she whispered, "I don't know.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean you don't know?""
"I mean... I wasn't sure.""
Jordan rubbed his forehead.
"Marcus, there's more.""
I turned toward him.
"Of course there is.""
He pulled out his phone.
"I have messages.""
Nia rushed toward him.
"Jordan, don't!""
He raised the phone above her reach.
"Stop protecting yourself for one minute, Nia.""
I looked between them.
"What messages?""
Jordan unlocked his phone and scrolled.
Then he handed it to me.
The conversation was dated six months before my wedding.
Nia: I can't keep pretending everything is normal.
Jordan: You need to tell him.
Nia: I can't lose Marcus.
Jordan: He deserves to know about Lily.
Nia: If he finds out, he'll leave.
Jordan: Then he has the right to decide.
I scrolled further.
The next message was from Nia.
There's another possibility. What if we just let things stay the way they are?
I read it again.
Then again.
"What does that mean?""
Nia sat on the edge of the bed.
"It was a difficult time.""
"That's not an answer.""
Jordan took a breath.
"She wanted to keep the baby secret and start over with you.""
I looked at him.
"And you agreed?""
"No.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
His eyes dropped.
"Because I made a mistake too.""
I handed the phone back.
I was beginning to understand that the two people standing in front of me had been making decisions about my life for years.
Without me.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the streetlights were coming on. A couple walked past our house, laughing as they carried grocery bags.
Ordinary people.
Ordinary lives.
I envied them.
Behind me, Nia spoke softly.
"Marcus, I love you.""
I turned around.
"Did you love me when you stood beside me at the altar?""
"Yes.""
"Did you love me when you hid Lily?""
She started crying again.
"Yes.""
"Did you love me when you continued talking to Jordan after promising you wouldn't?""
She didn't answer.
I pointed at the photograph.
"Did you ever intend to tell me?""
Nia looked down.
"I was going to.""
"When?""
"After we had children.""
I stared at her.
"After we had children?""
She nodded.
"I thought once we had a family of our own, it would be easier to explain.""
I felt sick.
"You planned to wait until we had children together before telling me about the child you already had?""
She began sobbing.
I turned away.
Then Jordan's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What's wrong?"" I asked.
He hesitated.
"It's a message from Lily's grandmother.""
I froze.
"What about Lily?""
Jordan looked at Nia.
Then at me.
"She's in the hospital.""
Nia jumped up.
"What?""
Jordan showed her the message.
I watched her face collapse.
"What happened?"" she whispered.
Jordan read aloud.
"Nia, you need to come immediately. Lily keeps asking for her father. I don't know how much longer I can keep explaining why he isn't here.""
Nia grabbed her handbag.
"I'm going.""
I stepped aside.
"Go.""
She stopped at the bedroom door.
"Marcus, please come with me.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because she's your family too.""
I almost laughed.
Four years of marriage, one hidden child, and suddenly I was family.
But something about that sentence bothered me.
Not because I didn't want to help a sick child.
Because I wanted to understand why Nia believed I belonged in that hospital.
I looked at Jordan.
"Why does Lily keep asking for her father?""
He swallowed.
"Because she's been told he's coming back.""
"Who told her that?""
Neither of them answered.
Then Jordan finally whispered:
"Someone who promised Lily that he would never abandon her.""
I looked at Nia.
Her face had gone completely white.
May you like
And I realized the biggest secret in our marriage might not be the child.
It might be the identity of the man who had promised to be her father.
