Chapter 3: The Woman Who Had the Key
I didn't sleep that night.
Neither did Emily.
At six in the morning, I stood outside the hospital cafeteria holding a paper cup of coffee that had gone cold.
My mind kept returning to one question.
Why would a woman threaten to take a child who wasn't hers?
Mara had always seemed generous.
She had helped Emily through difficult periods of our marriage. She had babysat Lily. She had even stayed with us for several days after Lily's birth.
I had never seen her behave violently.
But Sophie had been living behind our walls.
And Emily was afraid of her.
I returned to the pediatric ward.
Sophie was awake.
A nurse was helping her eat oatmeal.
She held the spoon with both hands, as though someone might take it away.
"Good morning," I said.
She looked up.
Then she immediately put the spoon down.
"Am I in trouble?""
"No, sweetheart.""
I pulled a chair beside her bed.
"How's breakfast?""
She glanced at the bowl.
"Good.""
"Would you like some more?""
She nodded cautiously.
The nurse smiled.
"She's been asking for Lily.""
"I'll bring her later.""
Sophie looked at me.
"Will she come?""
"Yes.""
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
I watched her take another bite.
Then I asked the question that had been eating at me.
"Do you know Mara's last name?""
She nodded.
"Mara Bell.""
I swallowed.
"Did she tell you who I am?""
Sophie looked at the blanket.
"She said you were my daddy.""
"Did she tell you why you couldn't come out?""
"She said you didn't want me.""
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt more than I expected.
"That's not true.""
Sophie looked at me carefully.
"She said you had a new family.""
"I didn't know about you.""
"She said Mommy Emily knew.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Did Mara come into the little room?""
Sophie nodded.
"Sometimes.""
"How?""
"She has a key.""
"What key?""
Sophie lifted her hand and made a small turning motion.
"She opens the wall.""
I leaned forward.
"Did she bring you food?""
"Sometimes.""
"What happened when you asked to leave?""
Sophie's fingers tightened around the spoon.
"She got angry.""
"What did she do?""
"She took my blanket.""
I looked at the thin white hospital blanket covering her legs.
"Anything else?""
Sophie nodded.
"She said Lily was my replacement.""
My blood turned cold.
"What does that mean?""
Sophie looked toward the door.
"She said if I didn't behave, she'd keep Lily instead.""
I stood up.
The nurse glanced at me.
"Sir?""
"Excuse me.""
I walked into the corridor and called Emily.
She answered immediately.
"Ryan?""
"Where are you?""
"At home. The police are here.""
"Is Mara there?""
A pause.
Then Emily whispered:
"No.""
"Did she contact you?""
Another pause.
"She called twice.""
"What did she say?""
Emily began crying.
"She wants to know where Sophie is.""
I looked through the glass at the little girl in the bed.
"Don't tell her anything.""
"I haven't.""
"Emily, listen carefully. Don't open the door to anyone. Don't let Lily out of your sight.""
"Ryan, I'm scared.""
"So am I.""
I ended the call.
Officer Daniels was standing near the nurses' station.
He had apparently heard enough to understand that something had changed.
"Problem?""
I told him what Sophie had said.
He didn't interrupt.
When I finished, he took out his phone.
"Mr. Carter, I need you to understand something. If Mara Bell has been entering your property without permission, and if she's threatening children, we're going to investigate.""
"She has a key.""
"To your house?""
"Apparently.""
Daniels made a call.
Then he turned toward me.
"Do you have security cameras?""
"Front door, driveway, garage, backyard.""
"Good. I want the footage from the last six months.""
"Six months?""
"Start there.""
He lowered his voice.
"And don't confront her.""
I almost laughed.
The idea of confronting Mara had been the only thing keeping me from losing my mind.
But I nodded.
At 8:35, I returned home with Officer Daniels.
Two uniformed officers were already inside.
Emily sat on the living room sofa with Lily beside her.
Lily was coloring a picture.
When she saw me, she ran across the room.
"Daddy!""
I picked her up.
"Hey, princess.""
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
"Where's my friend?""
"Sophie is at the hospital.""
"Is she better?""
"She's getting better.""
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered something into my ear.
"Can I give her another sandwich?""
My throat tightened.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Emily watched us.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was uncombed, and her eyes were swollen.
I put Lily down and approached my wife.
"We need to talk.""
She nodded.
Officer Daniels remained nearby.
"Start from the beginning," I said.
Emily glanced at the officer.
Then at me.
"Four years ago, Mara told me she was pregnant.""
I frowned.
"With my child?""
"She said she was.""
"How?""
Emily swallowed.
"She told me you had been seeing her before we got married.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"She showed me messages. Photographs. Medical documents.""
"That's ridiculous.""
"I know that now.""
"Did you believe her?""
Emily lowered her head.
"At first.""
I felt something break inside me.
"You believed I had an affair with your best friend?""
"She showed me a photograph of you outside her apartment.""
"I was there because you asked me to pick up your birthday gift!""
Emily covered her mouth.
"I know.""
I took a step back.
"How long did this go on?""
"Months.""
"And you never asked me?""
"I was pregnant with Lily. I was terrified.""
I looked at Officer Daniels.
He was writing something.
Emily continued.
"Mara told me the baby was yours. She said she had discovered the pregnancy too late to terminate it. She begged me not to tell you because she didn't want to destroy our marriage.""
I stared at her.
"So what did you do?""
"I agreed to help.""
"Help how?""
"She told me she would place the baby with another family. She said she couldn't raise a child alone.""
"Did you meet Sophie?""
Emily nodded.
"At the hospital.""
"When?""
"After she was born.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Emily's voice cracked.
"Because Mara told me you would leave me.""
I shook my head.
"That was her decision to make, not yours.""
"I know.""
"Then what happened?""
Emily wiped her cheeks.
"She disappeared for several months. Then she came back with the baby.""
"And?""
"She said the adoption had fallen through. She said she needed somewhere to keep Sophie temporarily.""
I stared at her.
"Temporarily?""
Emily nodded.
"She told me she'd found a family willing to take her. She needed a few weeks.""
"And you let her hide a baby in our house?""
"No. Not at first. She brought her to the house while you were away. She said she'd only be there for an hour.""
Emily looked toward the hallway.
"Then I heard crying behind the wall.""
My hands curled into fists.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Mara said the child wasn't safe anywhere else. She told me people were looking for her.""
"Who?""
Emily shook her head.
"I never knew.""
"Then why did you keep protecting Mara?""
Emily looked at Lily.
"Because she threatened to tell you I had helped her.""
I stared at my wife.
"You did help her.""
"I know.""
The room went silent.
Then Officer Daniels spoke.
"Mrs. Carter, when was the last time Mara entered this house?""
Emily looked at the floor.
"Last Friday.""
I turned sharply.
"What?""
"She said she wanted to check on Sophie.""
"She came here last Friday?""
Emily nodded.
"Did you let her in?""
"Yes.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"While Lily was here?""
Emily began crying again.
"Ryan, I didn't know what else to do.""
Officer Daniels closed his notebook.
"Do you have any messages from Mara?""
Emily nodded.
"On my phone.""
"May I see them?""
She handed it over.
He scrolled through the conversations.
Most were ordinary.
Pictures of Lily.
Questions about dinner.
A message asking whether Emily had bought a particular brand of coffee.
Then one conversation from the previous Friday caught his attention.
MARA: Did she behave?
EMILY: Yes.
MARA: Did she ask about her father?
EMILY: No.
MARA: Good. Keep it that way.
The officer continued scrolling.
A second message appeared.
MARA: If Ryan finds out, remember what we agreed.
EMILY: I can't keep doing this.
MARA: You promised me.
EMILY: She's a child.
MARA: And Lily is yours. Think carefully about what you want to lose.
Daniels looked up.
"Mrs. Carter, what does this mean?""
Emily's face went white.
Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
One of the uniformed officers moved toward the front window.
He looked outside.
Then turned back.
"There's a woman at the door.""
Emily stood so quickly that Lily's crayons scattered across the floor.
I looked through the glass.
A familiar blonde woman stood on our front porch.
She wore a cream-colored coat, dark sunglasses, and carried a large leather handbag.
Mara Bell.
She was smiling.
Like someone arriving for Sunday brunch.
Officer Daniels approached the door.
"Don't open it," I said.
He nodded to the other officer.
Then he spoke through the closed door.
"Ma'am, police. Please step away from the entrance.""
Mara removed her sunglasses.
Her smile disappeared.
"Where's Emily?""
"Please step away from the door.""
"I need to speak with my friend.""
"Not right now.""
She glanced past him through the narrow glass panel.
Then she saw me.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Mara raised one hand.
She waved.
I felt Emily grip my arm.
"Ryan, don't let her inside.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
Emily's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because she doesn't know Sophie is gone.""
I stared at her.
"She knows. She called you twice.""
Emily shook her head frantically.
"No. She thinks Sophie is still there.""
I looked back at the door.
Mara had taken out her phone.
A second later, Emily's phone vibrated.
She looked down.
Her hands began shaking.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
I took the phone.
A new message from Mara filled the screen.
I know you opened the wall.
Another message arrived.
You shouldn't have touched her.
Then a third.
I told you what would happen if Ryan found out.
I looked through the glass.
Mara was no longer smiling.
She was staring directly at me.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through.
Not Mara's.
It was older, controlled, and strangely familiar.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Dr. Evelyn Price. I was the attending physician when your daughter was born.""
I glanced at Emily.
She had gone completely still.
The woman continued.
"There's something in Sophie's birth records that your wife has not told you.""
"What?""
A pause.
Then she said:
"Mr. Carter, Sophie isn't the only child Mara has been hiding.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"How many children?""
The doctor took a breath.
"Two.""
I looked at Emily.
She was crying silently.
May you like
Then Dr. Price delivered the words that made the entire house feel unfamiliar.
"And according to the original hospital records, Lily was supposed to be the one who disappeared.""
