Thinking

Chapter 8: The Man Behind My Name

The words didn’t make sense.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

“To meet the man who is.””

My father stopped.

He didn’t finish the sentence.

Maybe he couldn’t.

Maybe he knew that once the words existed, nothing would ever be the same again.

I stared at him.

“My biological father?””

He nodded slowly.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

For eighteen years, I had known one father.

The man who packed my lunches.

The man who waited outside school when I stayed late.

The man who cheered louder than anyone at my graduation.

The man who had just spent the entire day fighting for me.

And now I was being told he wasn’t the person whose blood ran through my veins.

I looked at the letter again.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

The words were hers.

But my mind refused to accept them.

“Who is he?””

My father sat down.

I had never seen him look so afraid.

Not when Mia destroyed my dress.

Not when we discovered the school records.

Not even when he found out about the letter.

This scared him.

“His name is Daniel.””

I waited.

That name meant nothing.

“Daniel who?””

My father looked down.

“Daniel Reed.””

The silence after that name felt heavy.

“Do I know him?””

“No.””

“Does he know me?””

My father hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“He knows?””

“He has always known you existed.””

I stood up.

“Then why hasn’t he ever contacted me?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was worse.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because he wasn’t allowed to.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked toward the window.

“When your mother left, there were many things happening that you didn’t know about.””

I folded my arms.

“I’m starting to notice.””

He accepted the anger in my voice.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your mother met Daniel before she met me.””

I felt a strange ache.

“Were they together?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“A few years.””

I nodded slowly.

“And then?””

“Then she met me.””

The answer was simple.

But there was pain behind it.

“She was honest with me about her past.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still married her?””

My father gave a small sad smile.

“People are not just their worst moments.””

I looked away.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still protecting someone who hurt him.

But maybe that was who he was.

Maybe that was why he had been such a good father.

“What happened with Daniel?””

My father was quiet.

“Your mother became pregnant.””

My heart stopped.

“With me.””

He nodded.

“She didn’t know at first.””

“And when she found out?””

“She was scared.””

I looked at the letter.

The words about mistakes.

The words about fear.

“She didn’t know who the father was?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Did you?””

He looked at me.

“Eventually.””

“How?””

“Your mother told me.””

I swallowed.

“What did you do?””

His eyes filled with sadness.

“What any person who loved her would do.””

I waited.

“I stayed.””

That answer hurt.

Because it explained everything.

The man sitting in front of me had chosen me.

Not because he had to.

Because he wanted to.

“But Daniel?””

My father looked down.

“He wanted to be involved.””

“And you stopped him?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

“Emma, I would never take your biological father away from you.””

“Then why don’t I know him?””

My father’s face tightened.

“Because your mother made that choice.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She believed Daniel’s life was unstable. She believed he couldn’t provide the kind of environment you needed.””

“And you agreed?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I argued with her.””

I looked at him.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“I told her that a child deserved to know both parents.””

“Then what happened?””

He looked at the letter.

“She left before we could resolve anything.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Too many pieces.

Too many missing years.

“And Mia knew?””

My father looked surprised.

“What?””

“Mia knew something.””

I explained the note.

The photo.

The letter.

His expression darkened.

“She found out about Daniel?””

“I think so.””

He stood.

“Then that’s why.””

“What?””

“That’s why she wanted you to ask why I chose you.””

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

My father walked to the desk.

He opened another drawer.

Inside was another folder.

He handed it to me.

“This is what Mia found years ago.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Old letters.

And one photograph.

A man.

A stranger.

But somehow familiar.

Dark hair.

My eyes.

My smile.

I looked away.

“That’s him?””

My father nodded.

“Daniel.””

I studied the photo.

A stranger who was somehow part of me.

A person who had existed my whole life without me knowing.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My father’s voice softened.

“Because I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From feeling abandoned.””

I looked at him.

“But I already felt abandoned.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

My father looked hurt.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

“I know.””

And that was somehow worse.

He knew.

He knew there was a hole.

And he had tried to fill it with love.

But some questions still remained.

A few hours later, Mia came downstairs.

She looked like she hadn’t slept.

She stopped when she saw the documents on the table.

“You know.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at her.

“You knew all of this?””

She nodded.

“How?””

“I found the folder.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you kept it from me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I was angry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She flinched.

“I thought if you knew Dad wasn’t your real father, you would stop loving him.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She cried quietly.

“I thought it would destroy the perfect picture you had.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted to hurt me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But then I read the documents.””

She looked at my father.

“And I realized something.””

“What?””

She looked back at me.

“Dad chose you.””

I stayed silent.

“He didn’t have to.””

Her voice cracked.

“He could have walked away.””

My father looked down.

“But he didn’t.””

Mia wiped her face.

“That made me angry.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted him to choose me like that.””

The room became quiet.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

Not the cruel things.

Not the betrayal.

But the wound underneath them.

Mia wasn’t fighting me.

She was fighting the feeling that she had been left behind.

But she had hurt me trying to prove she was hurting.

My phone buzzed.

Again.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture appeared.

My blood turned cold.

It was Daniel.

Standing outside a building.

The message underneath said:

*Emma, I know you found out. We need to talk before your father tells you the rest.*

I looked up.

My father noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I turned the phone around.

He read the message.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he recognized the place in the picture.

And whatever was inside that building…

was something he had spent eighteen years trying to hide from me.

My father whispered:

“He found you.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

His face went pale.

“Your biological father.””

A second message appeared.

May you like

This time, it was only one sentence.

*Ask David what happened the night your mother disappeared.*
