Chapter 5: The Man Who Wanted His Son Back

My father didn't speak for almost a full minute.

He stood beside the dining table, one hand resting on the back of a chair, while Vanessa sat with her fingers twisted together in her lap.

"Tyler's father," Daniel finally repeated.

Vanessa nodded.

"His name is Richard.""

"I know his name. I've met him twice.""

"Then you know why I didn't want you involved.""

"No, Vanessa. I know that you told me he moved out of state and had no interest in being part of Tyler's life.""

"He doesn't.""

"Then why does he believe you owe him thirty-five thousand dollars?""

Vanessa looked down.

I had met Richard once, at a school event when I was twelve. He was tall, well dressed, and had a cold way of looking at people that made me feel as though he were evaluating how useful they might be.

He had barely acknowledged Tyler that evening.

Later, when I asked Vanessa why Tyler's father hadn't stayed for dinner, she told me Richard had always been selfish.

Now, sitting in our kitchen, I wondered whether there had been more to that story.

Daniel pulled out a chair and sat across from her.

"Start at the beginning.""

Vanessa rubbed her hands together.

"When Richard and I separated, he promised to help with Tyler's expenses. He said he would pay child support, cover school costs, and make sure Tyler never went without.""

"And did he?""

"At first. Then the payments became irregular. Eventually, he stopped.""

"Why didn't you take him to court?""

"I didn't want a fight.""

Daniel stared at her.

"So instead, you borrowed money.""

"Yes.""

"And when you couldn't repay it, you borrowed more.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Richard contacted me last year. He said he wanted to make things right with Tyler. He offered to help me pay off the debt if I agreed to let Tyler spend more time with him.""

"That sounds reasonable.""

"Not when you know Richard.""

Daniel leaned back.

"Explain.""

Vanessa's voice grew quieter.

"Richard doesn't do anything without expecting something in return. He wanted Tyler to move in with him after graduation. He said he'd pay for college and give him a car.""

I thought of the blue sports car sitting outside.

My stomach tightened.

"Then why did you buy Tyler a car yourself?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because I didn't want Richard to have that kind of influence over him.""

"By using my money?""

She flinched.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like you wanted to buy your son's loyalty before his father could.""

"Emily," Daniel warned gently, "let her finish.""

I pressed my lips together.

Vanessa continued.

"Richard told me he would forgive the debt if I helped him prepare Tyler for a move. He wanted Tyler to see him as the parent who could provide everything he needed. I was afraid Tyler would leave me.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"So you took money from Emily to make sure Tyler stayed.""

"I didn't think of it that way.""

"How else should I think of it?""

She began to cry again.

"I was desperate.""

I watched her wipe her cheeks.

There had been a time when I would have felt sorry for her.

I remembered the nights she'd sat beside Tyler's bed when he had a fever. I remembered how carefully she'd wrapped his birthday presents, how she'd saved his drawings from elementary school, how she still kept his baby photographs in an album beside her bed.

She loved her son.

I could see that clearly.

But somewhere along the way, she had decided that loving him gave her permission to take from me.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did Richard know you were using Emily's money?""

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation was answer enough.

"Vanessa.""

"He knew I was trying to raise the money.""

"Did he know where it came from?""

She looked at her hands.

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"He's the one who told you to take it?""

"No!""

Her response was immediate.

"He didn't tell me to steal anything. He said I had to pay him by Friday or he would take legal action over the debt.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"Then you should have told me.""

"You would have said no.""

"To stealing from your stepdaughter? Yes, I would have.""

Vanessa covered her face.

I turned away, struggling to breathe normally.

For months, I had worried that my eyesight was getting worse because I wasn't sleeping enough or spending too much time on screens. I had been looking forward to the appointment because I wanted answers.

Instead, I had discovered that my stepmother had been moving my money around behind my back.

And now I was learning that another adult had known about it.

"Did Richard know about the $30,000 car?"" Daniel asked.

Vanessa nodded.

"He suggested it.""

My father went completely still.

"What?""

"He said Tyler needed a car that would make him feel confident. He said if I wanted Tyler to stay with me after graduation, I needed to show him that he wouldn't have to choose between his parents.""

Daniel stared at her.

"So Richard encouraged you to buy your son an expensive car with money that belonged to Emily?""

"He said I could replace it before anyone noticed.""

I felt as if the room were spinning.

"He said that?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I thought I could.""

I shook my head.

"You thought you could replace thirty thousand dollars before I checked my account?""

"I wasn't thinking clearly.""

"No," I said.

"You weren't thinking about me at all.""

Daniel stood and walked to the window.

He stared at the driveway for several seconds, then turned back.

"Where is the money Richard claims you owe him documented?""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"Do you have a loan agreement? Bank records? Anything showing that you borrowed thirty-five thousand dollars from him?""

She hesitated.

"Some of it was a loan.""

"And the rest?""

"He helped me with expenses.""

"How much did he actually lend you?""

"I don't know.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"You're asking me to believe that you owe your former partner thirty-five thousand dollars, but you can't tell me exactly how the debt was calculated.""

"He kept track.""

"Of course he did.""

His tone made Vanessa look up.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

"It means that someone who claims you owe him money should be able to show you the records. And if he's threatening legal action, we need to understand what he's claiming before you hand him another dollar.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You don't understand Richard. He can make things difficult.""

"Then we will get proper advice.""

"You can't protect me from him.""

Daniel paused.

"I'm not sure I can. But I can stop you from making this worse by taking more money from Emily.""

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that he wasn't going to rescue her by pretending nothing had happened.

A sharp knock sounded at the front door.

We all turned.

Daniel checked the time.

"Are you expecting someone?""

Vanessa went pale.

"No.""

He walked into the hall and looked through the glass panel.

A man stood on the porch in a charcoal coat, holding a slim leather folder. He was in his late forties, with neatly combed dark hair and an expression that looked almost friendly.

When Daniel opened the door, the man smiled.

"Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

"I'm Richard Hayes. Vanessa said we should talk.""

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, "Oh, God.""

Richard stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.

His gaze moved over the hall, the staircase, and finally me.

"Emily," he said pleasantly.

"You've grown up.""

I didn't respond.

He looked at Daniel.

"I understand there have been some financial misunderstandings.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"How do you know about them?""

Richard opened his leather folder.

"Because Vanessa called me this morning.""

My father glanced toward his wife.

She looked as though she wanted the floor to swallow her.

Richard placed a document on the hall table.

"Let's not make this more complicated than it needs to be. Vanessa owes me money. I offered to help her settle things with Tyler, but now she tells me you've decided to involve lawyers.""

Daniel didn't touch the document.

"How much does she owe you?""

"Thirty-five thousand dollars.""

"Can you provide a record of the debt?""

Richard smiled.

"Of course.""

He tapped the folder.

"It's all here.""

Daniel looked at the folder, then at Richard.

"Did you know that Vanessa transferred $30,000 out of my daughter's savings account without her permission?""

Richard's smile faded slightly.

"I knew she was arranging financing for the car.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Richard adjusted his cuff.

"I don't involve myself in family disagreements.""

"You involved yourself when you encouraged Vanessa to use money that wasn't hers.""

"I never told her where to get the money.""

"But you knew she didn't have it.""

Richard's expression cooled.

"Daniel, I suggest you focus on your own household. My relationship with Vanessa is separate from yours.""

He glanced toward Tyler's room.

"I'm here because I want to talk to my son.""

Daniel moved slightly, blocking the staircase.

"Tyler isn't part of this conversation.""

"He's my son.""

"And this is my home.""

Richard gave a small, humorless laugh.

"You've been playing father to him for years, Daniel. That doesn't change the fact that I'm his biological parent.""

Vanessa rose from her chair.

"Richard, please don't do this.""

He looked at her.

"Don't do what? Tell the truth?""

Then he turned back to Daniel.

"I've offered Tyler a place to live after graduation. A car, college tuition, and a fresh start. All I want is for Vanessa to stop standing in the way.""

I stared at the red ribbon outside.

The sports car was no longer simply a gift.

It was a bargaining chip in a contest between two parents who both claimed to love the same boy.

Daniel's voice remained steady.

"And how does Emily's stolen money fit into your fresh start?""

Richard's eyes flicked toward me.

For the first time, I saw irritation beneath his polished expression.

"She'll recover financially. She's young.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"That's easy for you to say.""

Richard raised his eyebrows.

"Excuse me?""

"You didn't save the money. My mother did. You didn't lose it. I did.""

He regarded me for a moment, then turned back to Daniel.

"This is precisely why adults should handle these matters privately.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"No. This is precisely why adults should stop making decisions that hurt children and then telling them to stay quiet.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

He picked up the document from the hall table and held it out.

"Sign this acknowledgment of Vanessa's debt, and I'll give her more time to repay me. We can settle the rest between ourselves.""

Daniel took the document but didn't sign it.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression changed.

"What is this?""

Richard's voice remained smooth.

"A debt acknowledgment.""

Daniel turned another page.

"This says Vanessa owes you $35,000 and agrees to transfer her interest in certain household assets if she defaults.""

Vanessa gasped.

"I never agreed to that!""

Richard turned toward her.

"You agreed to repay me.""

"Not with my home!""

Daniel looked at the document again.

Then he asked the question that made Richard's composure crack.

"Why does this agreement list an asset that Vanessa doesn't own?""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Daniel tapped a line near the bottom of the page.

It referenced a property interest belonging to Daniel Carter.

My father.

Richard slowly closed the folder.

"That is a standard clause.""

"No," Daniel said.

"It isn't.""

He set the document on the hall table.

"You have just attempted to make my wife responsible for transferring an asset that belongs to me. Explain that.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

For the first time since entering our house, he looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Vanessa stared at him.

"Richard, what did you do?""

He ignored her.

Instead, he looked at Daniel and spoke in a voice stripped of its earlier friendliness.

"Perhaps you should ask your wife why she agreed to use your financial information when she applied for the loan.""

My father went silent.

Vanessa made a small, broken sound.

I looked from one adult to the other, suddenly aware that the stolen savings were only one part of something much larger.

Then Richard reached into his folder and removed another document.

May you like

He placed it in front of Daniel.

"Because if we're going to discuss financial responsibility," he said, "you should see the application Vanessa submitted using your name.""
