Chapter 7: The Third Child

The sound of breaking glass echoed through the entire house.

For one second, nobody moved.

Not the woman standing in the doorway.

Not Evelyn.

Not Lauren.

Not me.

Then instinct took over.

I grabbed my daughter tighter and stepped away from the window.

The woman in front of us looked toward the hallway.

"She's here.""

My skin prickled.

"Who?""

The woman didn't answer.

Instead, she walked quickly into the study and shut the door behind her.

"Turn off the lights.""

Lauren stared at her.

"Why should we listen to you?""

The woman looked at her.

Because somehow, even after everything, she still had an authority that made the room feel smaller.

"Because if you don't, you'll learn the truth from someone who wants you dead.""

Nobody argued.

The lights went out.

The only illumination came from the snow reflecting through the window.

I could hear my own breathing.

Emma shifted in my arms.

I whispered softly.

"It's okay, baby.""

But I wasn't sure if I was saying it for her or myself.

The woman stood beside the door.

Waiting.

Listening.

Then she whispered:

"She knows we're here.""

Evelyn's voice was cold.

"How?""

The woman looked at her.

"Because you brought Claire.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

The woman didn't look away.

"It means everything started moving the moment you came back.""

I stepped forward.

"I need answers.""

She nodded slowly.

"You deserve them.""

"Then tell me who you are.""

A pause.

Then:

"My name is Diane.""

The name meant nothing.

But Evelyn reacted.

Her face went pale.

"Diane Carter.""

The woman looked at her.

"You remember.""

"You're dead.""

Diane gave a sad smile.

"So everyone keeps saying.""

My stomach twisted.

Another person who was supposed to be dead.

Another lie.

"Who are you?"" I demanded.

Diane looked at the folders on the desk.

"I was your grandmother's assistant.""

I frowned.

"Assistant?""

"More than that.""

She looked down.

"I helped her.""

The confession made the room colder.

"Helped her do what?""

Diane closed her eyes.

"Everything.""

Lauren stepped forward.

"You knew?""

"Yes.""

"You knew about Lily?""

"Yes.""

"You knew about Claire?""

Diane looked at me.

"Yes.""

My heart pounded.

"Then why?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Outside, snow hit the window.

Soft.

Steady.

Almost peaceful.

Finally, Diane spoke.

"Because your grandmother believed she was saving the family.""

I laughed quietly.

"Saving?""

I looked at the files.

"She destroyed lives.""

Diane nodded.

"I know.""

"Then why help her?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I was a coward.""

The honesty surprised me.

I expected excuses.

A lie.

Anything except that.

Diane continued.

"When your grandmother lost the ability to have children, she became obsessed with legacy.""

"That doesn't explain stealing babies.""

"No.""

She looked at me.

"It doesn't.""

She walked toward the desk.

"She didn't originally plan to take you.""

I felt my body go still.

"What?""

Diane opened a drawer.

Inside were more documents.

"Your grandmother wanted Lily.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Of course.""

"Why Lily?""

Diane looked at her.

"Because Lily was Evelyn's daughter.""

I didn't understand.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It does to your grandmother.""

Diane touched one of the files.

"She believed Evelyn's family carried something special.""

"What?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why take her?""

"Because she thought she could control the future.""

My stomach turned.

"That's insane.""

Diane didn't disagree.

"Yes.""

The simplicity of her answer made it worse.

"Then what happened?""

Diane looked at me.

"Your grandmother made one mistake.""

"What?""

"She underestimated how much your mother loved you.""

I looked toward the hallway.

"Margaret?""

Diane nodded.

"Your mother was never supposed to raise you.""

My breath caught.

"Then who was?""

Diane looked at Evelyn.

"Nobody.""

Silence.

"What?""

"Your grandmother planned to move Lily into the Bennett family.""

"But Lily wasn't there.""

"No.""

Diane swallowed.

"Because the plan failed.""

"How?""

"Evelyn survived.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"She was supposed to die?""

Evelyn's face hardened.

"That's what they wanted.""

My chest tightened.

Diane continued.

"The hospital records were changed. The nurse was paid. The paperwork was altered.""

"By my grandmother?""

"Yes.""

"And my father?""

Diane looked away.

That was answer enough.

I felt sick.

"But why did they take me too?""

Diane's expression changed.

Regret.

Deep regret.

"Because when your grandmother realized Lily was gone...""

She paused.

"She needed a replacement.""

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"A replacement?""

Diane nodded.

"She chose you.""

Evelyn whispered:

"Because you looked like Lily.""

My hand moved protectively over Emma.

I understood then.

The photographs.

The files.

The obsession.

I wasn't a granddaughter to my grandmother.

I was a substitute.

A stolen piece.

A reminder of the child she failed to keep.

Lauren stared at the folders.

"Then what am I?""

Everyone looked at her.

She laughed once.

A painful sound.

"Seriously.""

She pointed at the files.

"Everyone has been talking about Claire and Lily.""

Her voice cracked.

"But nobody is explaining why my name is in here.""

Diane looked at her.

"I was hoping you wouldn't find that file.""

Lauren stepped closer.

"Too late.""

Diane sighed.

"Lauren was part of the reason everything fell apart.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Diane looked at me.

"Your grandmother didn't just take babies.""

The words came slowly.

"She studied them.""

A chill moved through me.

"Studied?""

"She wanted to prove something.""

"What?""

"That family wasn't blood.""

I didn't understand.

Diane continued.

"She believed love could be manufactured.""

Nobody spoke.

"She wanted to raise children connected to different families and see what happened.""

Lauren looked horrified.

"That's why she watched us.""

Diane nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at the files.

The notes.

The photographs.

My entire childhood reduced to an experiment.

Then I saw something.

A document beneath Lauren's folder.

A medical report.

My eyes moved across the page.

And stopped.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at me.

I picked it up.

"What is this?""

Lauren came closer.

"What?""

I handed her the paper.

She read it.

Her face changed.

"No.""

"What?""

She looked at Diane.

"Tell me this isn't true.""

Diane didn't speak.

Lauren's voice shook.

"Tell me.""

Finally, Diane whispered:

"It is.""

I looked between them.

"What is it?""

Lauren handed me the paper.

My eyes scanned the words.

*DNA TEST RESULTS.*

The names at the top:

*Claire Bennett.*

*Lauren Bennett.*

The result below:

*Biological relationship: Siblings.*

I looked up.

"What?""

Lauren's eyes filled with tears.

"We're sisters.""

I stared at her.

"But that means...""

Diane nodded.

"It means Lily wasn't the only child connected to this.""

My heart raced.

"Then who is Lauren?""

Diane looked at her.

"The third child.""

The words echoed.

The third child.

The baby in the file.

The child who was never meant to survive.

Lauren stepped back.

"No.""

Diane looked devastated.

"Your grandmother found you after the hospital incident.""

"Found me where?""

"In the records.""

"What records?""

Diane looked toward the broken window.

"That's what she was trying to hide.""

A sound came from downstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Someone else was inside.

Diane immediately grabbed the documents.

"We need to leave.""

I held Emma tighter.

"Who is down there?""

Nobody answered.

Then a man's voice called from below.

"Claire?""

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

My father.

But he wasn't supposed to be here.

Diane's face went white.

"No.""

Lauren whispered:

"That's impossible.""

The voice came again.

Closer.

"Claire, come downstairs.""

I looked at Diane.

"What's wrong?""

She stared at the door.

"Because Robert isn't alone.""

A shadow moved beneath the crack.

Two pairs of footsteps.

One slow.

One dragging.

Then my father's voice came again.

But this time, it wasn't gentle.

It wasn't worried.

It was cold.

"Bring the baby.""

Emma started crying.

And Diane whispered the words I would never forget.

"Claire, don't let them take her.""

I backed away.

"Why?""

Diane looked at my daughter.

"Because they already took one generation.""

May you like

The doorknob began to turn.

"And they're here to take the next one.""
