Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back From The Dead
For eleven years, I had lived with a ghost.
I had imagined Ethan’s last moments a thousand different ways.
Sometimes I pictured him running.
Sometimes I pictured him fighting.
Sometimes, on the worst nights, I pictured him alone somewhere, calling my name and wondering why I never found him.
I had carried that pain quietly.
I had built an entire life around the hole he left behind.
And now a single sentence had ripped everything apart.
*Ethan Collins — Found Alive After Eleven Years Missing.*
Alive.
The word looked impossible.
It looked like a mistake.
Like someone had typed the wrong name.
I stared at Elena’s phone until my eyes burned.
“No,” I whispered.
Elena sat across from me.
“Marissa…”
“No. You don’t understand.””
“I know this is shocking.””
“You don’t understand.””
My voice cracked.
“Ethan doesn’t just disappear for eleven years and come back.””
Marcus watched me carefully.
“Why not?””
Because the answer was complicated.
Because the Ethan I knew would never leave me.
Not without a reason.
Not without saying goodbye.
“He would have found me,” I said.
Marcus leaned forward.
“Unless he couldn’t.””
The room went silent.
That possibility hurt more than anger.
Because somewhere deep inside me, I had always wondered.
What if Ethan hadn’t abandoned me?
What if something had stopped him?
Elena picked up her phone again.
“The report says he appeared at the Willow Creek Police Department early this morning.””
“Why?””
“It doesn’t say.””
“Did he ask for me?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“What?””
“He gave the police information about David Collins.””
My heart stopped.
“What kind of information?””
Elena looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“He claims David framed you.””
The air left my lungs.
For three weeks, I had been fighting to prove something I knew was true.
And now the one person who might know the entire truth had returned.
But instead of relief, I felt something else.
Fear.
Because if Ethan knew what David was capable of…
Why had he stayed away?
Why had he let me believe he was dead?
The next day, Elena arranged a private meeting.
Not at the police station.
Not at the jail.
At a small office used for attorney-client interviews.
She said it was safer.
I wasn’t sure what that meant.
Nothing felt safe anymore.
When the door opened, I stopped breathing.
Ethan stood there.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
His hair had turned darker in some places and gray in others.
His face carried lines I had never seen before.
But his eyes?
His eyes were the same.
The same eyes that looked at me when I was ten years old and promised me I would never face the world alone.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then his face broke.
“Marissa.””
My legs almost gave out.
I hated him.
I loved him.
I missed him.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to hug him.
I wanted to go back eleven years and stop everything from happening.
Instead, I whispered:
“You’re alive.””
A tear formed in his eyes.
“Yes.””
My hands shook.
“Why?””
One word.
But it carried eleven years of pain.
Why didn’t you call?
Why didn’t you come home?
Why did I mourn you?
Why did I spend years believing I failed you?
Ethan looked down.
“I tried.””
I laughed bitterly.
“No.””
“Marissa—”
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You don’t get to say that.””
He flinched.
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“I buried you.””
“I know.””
“I told myself you were gone because it was easier than believing you chose not to come back.””
His face collapsed.
“I never chose that.””
“Then explain.””
Ethan looked at Elena.
She nodded.
“Tell her everything.””
He sat down.
And for the first time in eleven years, my brother told me the truth.
“After I found the evidence against David, I made copies.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice was quiet.
“You don’t know what happened after.””
I said nothing.
“I met someone who was willing to help me.””
“Who?””
“A journalist.””
Marcus looked up.
“Name?””
“Sarah Bennett.””
I frowned.
“I don’t know that name.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
Ethan rubbed his hands together.
“Sarah was investigating financial crimes connected to several companies. I gave her the files.””
“What happened?””
“She disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Two days later.””
The room became colder.
“I thought David got to her.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Then I realized he was coming after everyone connected to the evidence.””
My voice lowered.
“And you?””
“I ran.””
The answer hurt.
“You ran?””
“Yes.””
“You left me.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were supposed to trust me.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because David was watching you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew about you.””
“How?””
“Because he knew everything.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“He knew where you worked. Where you lived. Who you talked to.””
My stomach turned.
“David was obsessed with controlling the situation.””
“So you disappeared?””
“I made it look like I disappeared.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“I created a trail that made people believe I was dead.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You faked your death?””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
Ethan accepted them.
Because he knew I was right.
“I thought if David believed I was gone, he would stop looking.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Because he went after me.””
Ethan’s face changed.
Pain.
Anger.
Regret.
“Yes.””
Silence filled the room.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Did you know he was going to frame me?””
Ethan looked away.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
“I didn’t have proof.””
“You could have warned me!””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I came back to town.””
My heart raced.
“You were here?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before Noah’s birthday.””
I stared at him.
I remembered that day.
David had arrived early.
He had brought Noah a gift.
He had hugged me.
He had laughed.
And now I realized something.
Ethan had been close.
Watching.
But never coming home.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
“Because David was there.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
“He had started spending more time around your family.””
“That’s because he was family.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“No, Marissa.””
He leaned closer.
“He was monitoring you.””
I looked away.
Because suddenly every memory felt different.
Every kind gesture.
Every visit.
Every question.
“What did David want?”” I asked.
Ethan looked at the table.
“The same thing he wanted eleven years ago.””
“What?””
“The evidence.””
I frowned.
“What evidence?””
“The files proving he stole millions.””
My heart sank.
“But I don’t have them.””
“Yes, you do.””
I stared.
“No.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“You do.””
“What are you talking about?””
“The night I disappeared, I gave you something.””
My mind went blank.
“No, you didn’t.””
“Yes.””
“I would remember.””
“You were terrified.””
I shook my head.
“Ethan…”
“You were so focused on surviving that night, you forgot.””
My pulse quickened.
“What did you give me?””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“A flash drive.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I never had a flash drive.””
Ethan’s face became serious.
“You did.””
“Where?””
He took a breath.
“You hid it.””
“Where?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“You hid it somewhere David would never think to look.””
My mind raced.
Somewhere.
A place I had access to.
A place nobody would question.
Then I remembered.
A small box.
An old wooden box I had carried with me through every apartment.
Through every move.
Through every year.
The box I kept because it belonged to Ethan.
I looked at Elena.
“Where is my old storage box?””
She frowned.
“Your apartment?””
“No.””
My voice dropped.
“David already searched my apartment.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Then you need to find it before he does.””
Marcus suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pulled out his phone.
His face had changed.
“What?””
He showed us the screen.
A security alert.
From my apartment building.
The date.
The time.
Only ten minutes earlier.
Someone had entered my old apartment.
Someone who should not have had access.
Elena grabbed the phone.
“Who?””
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then he answered.
“David Collins.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
May you like
Because the box was hidden inside my apartment.
And David had just started looking for the one thing that could destroy him.
