Chapter 2: The Lie They Put on Camera

At 8:15 the following morning, I arrived at the Grand Meridian Hotel carrying a large portfolio of photographs, a flash drive, and the original registration documents.

My new creation sat in a temperature-controlled cake box beside me.

It was smaller than the five-tier masterpiece my mother had stolen.

But it was mine.

Every detail had been designed with my own hands.

The hotel ballroom was already crowded.

Contestants in white chef jackets hurried between preparation stations. Camera operators adjusted their equipment. Assistants carried trays of ingredients while sponsors examined the elaborate display tables.

A giant banner stretched across the stage.

*ATLANTA GRAND BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP — FINAL QUALIFIERS.*

I recognized the five-tier cake immediately.

It stood on a table near the entrance.

My cake.

The chocolate roses were still in their original positions. The golden decorations I'd spent hours polishing were arranged exactly as I'd left them.

But the small silver plaque I'd attached to the bottom had disappeared.

It had originally read:

Created with love, inspired by Eleanor Johnson.

Now a new plaque displayed a different name.

Tessa Johnson — The Beginning of Something Sweet.

I stared at it.

"Unbelievable," I whispered.

"Admiring your sister's work?""

I turned.

Tessa stood behind me wearing a fitted white chef's jacket with her name embroidered over the pocket.

Her makeup was flawless.

Her hair fell in perfect waves over her shoulders.

She looked like someone who had spent the morning preparing for a television interview.

Not someone who had spent the previous evening stealing her sister's work.

"Nice jacket," I said.

She glanced down proudly.

"Thank you. The organizers gave it to me.""

"Did they also give you the skills to make that cake?""

Her smile disappeared.

"Don't embarrass yourself, Aaliyah.""

"Where's the original plaque?""

"Which plaque?""

"The one with Grandma's name.""

Tessa rolled her eyes.

"Oh, that sentimental thing? Mom thought it looked unprofessional.""

I stepped closer.

"You removed Grandma's name?""

"Relax. Nobody cares about your grandmother.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

Before I could answer, Gloria appeared.

She wore a navy designer dress and carried a leather handbag.

"What's she doing here?""

Tessa shrugged.

"I told you she'd show up.""

My mother approached me with a tight smile.

"Go home, Aaliyah.""

"No.""

"This isn't the place for another one of your scenes.""

"You stole my cake.""

Gloria lowered her voice.

"Watch how you speak to me.""

"Why? Are you worried someone might hear the truth?""

She glanced around.

A few contestants were watching us.

"That cake belongs to Tessa now.""

"How does that work? Did you sign it over to her with a magic wand?""

Tessa folded her arms.

"Mom, can we please not do this here?""

Then she turned toward a nearby camera operator.

Her expression changed instantly.

"Hi! I'm Tessa Johnson. I'm so excited to be here.""

I watched her smile at the camera.

It was almost impressive how quickly she could become someone else.

Gloria leaned toward me.

"Listen carefully. You will not ruin this for your sister.""

I laughed once.

"You're worried about me ruining her opportunity? What about the opportunity you ruined for me?""

"You'll get another chance.""

"Then why didn't you let me have this one?""

She looked at me with an expression I'd seen countless times before.

Disappointment.

As if my refusal to surrender my future was a personal insult.

"Because Tessa has something you don't.""

"What?""

"People skills.""

I stared at her.

"Mom, she can't even temper chocolate.""

Gloria's jaw tightened.

"Keep your voice down.""

"Does she know what temperature buttercream should be stored at? Can she make sugar flowers? Does she know how to prevent a five-tier cake from collapsing?""

Tessa stepped between us.

"You're jealous because I'm finally getting attention.""

I looked at her.

"Do you even know what flavor the bottom tier is?""

She blinked.

"Chocolate.""

"It's almond sponge with raspberry compote.""

Her mouth opened.

I continued.

"The second tier is lemon chiffon with blueberry filling. The third is vanilla bean with strawberry preserves. The fourth is dark chocolate espresso. And the top tier is Grandma's honey cake.""

Tessa glanced at the display.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

"Whatever. I know enough.""

"No, you don't.""

Gloria grabbed my elbow.

"Come with me.""

She pulled me toward a quieter hallway.

Once we were out of sight, she released my arm.

"You're going to withdraw.""

I stared at her.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

"I've paid the registration fee. My name is on the original application.""

"Not anymore.""

"What did you do?""

Gloria opened her handbag and pulled out a folded document.

"Your sister is the registered contestant.""

I took the paper.

It was a signed statement.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Except I hadn't signed it.

The signature looked similar to mine, but the final letters were too rounded.

"Who forged this?""

"Nobody forged anything.""

"That's my signature.""

"Exactly.""

I looked at her.

"You know I didn't sign this.""

Gloria's expression remained cold.

"Do you really want to make a legal issue out of a family disagreement?""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"This isn't a disagreement. It's fraud.""

She leaned closer.

"Be careful, Aaliyah. You're living in my house. I pay the electricity.

I put food on that table. I can make your life very uncomfortable.""

I looked down at the document again.

For years, I'd believed that if I worked hard enough, my mother might eventually respect me.

Now I understood that she didn't want me to succeed.

She wanted me dependent.

"You're threatening to throw me out?""

"I'm telling you to think about your future.""

"My future?""

"Yes. Tessa is going places. You need to stop standing in her way.""

Before I could respond, a familiar voice interrupted us.

"Is everything all right here?""

Daniel Brooks stood at the end of the hallway.

He was a tall man in his forties, wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a tablet.

Gloria immediately smiled.

"Of course. We were just having a private family conversation.""

Daniel glanced at the document in my hand.

"Miss Johnson, did you bring the evidence I requested?""

"Yes.""

"Good. Come with me.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, I don't think that's necessary. This is a family matter.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Mrs. Johnson, the moment a contestant submits false ownership claims, it becomes the championship's matter.""

Gloria's smile disappeared.

"False claims?""

Daniel turned his tablet toward her.

"Yes. We've reviewed the registration history.""

He looked at me.

"Your original application was submitted three weeks ago. Your design photographs were uploaded progressively. The account activity is also consistent with the same creator.""

I nodded.

"Because I made it.""

"Furthermore, we received an email from an address associated with your sister requesting a change of contestant ownership yesterday evening.""

Tessa appeared behind our mother.

"That's ridiculous!""

Daniel looked at her.

"Would you like to explain why your submission includes photographs taken from your sister's private social media account?""

Tessa's face went pale.

"She sent them to me.""

I shook my head.

"I didn't.""

Gloria quickly intervened.

"Mr. Brooks, my daughters are emotional. Aaliyah has always struggled with sharing attention. She's making this much bigger than it needs to be.""

Daniel's expression remained neutral.

"Mrs. Johnson, we have a formal review process. Both contestants will have an opportunity to present their evidence.""

Tessa crossed her arms.

"But the cake is already registered under my name.""

"Temporarily," Daniel replied.

He turned to me.

"Miss Johnson, your original registration remains active pending review.""

I released a breath.

For the first time that morning, I felt I could stand straight again.

Then Daniel glanced toward the ballroom.

"There's one more issue.""

"What?""

"Your sister has already agreed to participate in a live interview about her creative process.""

I looked toward Tessa.

She was staring at the floor.

Daniel continued.

"The production team has prepared a segment called 'The Family Recipe.'' Your mother volunteered to discuss how she supported Tessa's baking journey.""

I almost laughed.

Supported?

Gloria had never bought me a single professional baking tool.

Grandma had.

And I had paid for everything else myself.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I think you should watch the interview.""

"Why?""

"Because your sister has made a statement that directly involves you.""

At 10:30 a.m., the contestants gathered in the ballroom.

A camera crew stood in front of Tessa and Gloria.

The interviewer, a cheerful woman named Melissa, held a microphone.

"Tessa, tell us how you came up with this incredible design.""

Tessa smiled.

"Well, I've always loved creating things. My grandmother was a huge inspiration, and my mother has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.""

Melissa nodded.

"How long did it take you to make this particular cake?""

"About three days.""

I nearly choked.

Melissa looked impressed.

"Three days! That's dedication.""

"Thank you. I wanted every detail to be perfect.""

"And did you have any help?""

Tessa glanced at Gloria.

"My mother helped me gather ingredients, but the design was completely mine.""

Gloria beamed.

I stepped closer to the camera.

"That's a lie.""

The room went silent.

Tessa turned.

"Aaliyah!""

Melissa lowered her microphone.

"Sorry. Who are you?""

"My name is Aaliyah Johnson. I'm the person who actually made that cake.""

Gloria hurried forward.

"She's my older daughter. Unfortunately, she's been having some emotional difficulties.""

I looked directly into the camera.

"I have photographs from every stage of construction, original recipe notes, receipts for the ingredients, and time-stamped videos showing me decorating that cake.""

Tessa's expression hardened.

"You're trying to humiliate me!""

"No. I'm trying to stop you from taking credit for my work.""

Melissa looked between us.

"Perhaps we should pause the interview.""

Daniel approached.

"That won't be necessary.""

He nodded toward the production manager.

"Please preserve the footage.""

Gloria grabbed Tessa's hand.

"Come on. We're leaving.""

But before they could move, a woman near the judges' table stood up.

She was elegant, with short silver hair and a small gold brooch shaped like a whisk.

I recognized her immediately.

Judge Margaret Ellis.

One of the most respected pastry chefs in the country.

She had also been Grandma Eleanor's closest friend.

Margaret walked toward the cake.

She studied the decorations.

Then she looked at Tessa.

"Young lady, who taught you to make the chocolate roses?""

Tessa swallowed.

"My grandmother.""

Margaret tilted her head.

"Really?""

She pointed toward the bottom tier.

"Then perhaps you can explain why this particular rose uses Eleanor's signature folding technique.""

Tessa said nothing.

Margaret turned to me.

"Aaliyah, sweetheart, did you make this?""

I nodded.

Her eyes softened.

"I thought so.""

Then she looked at Gloria.

"Because I taught Eleanor that technique forty years ago.""

The entire room fell silent.

Margaret stepped closer to the cake and touched the edge of one chocolate petal.

"Your mother knows exactly whose work this is.""

Gloria's face went white.

May you like

And then Margaret said something that made Tessa take an involuntary step backward.

"Actually, I was expecting Eleanor's granddaughter to bring me something today. I never expected to find her work displayed under someone else's name.""
