Chapter 7: The Secret Daniel Tried To Bury
Vanessa didn't move.
Neither did I.
For several seconds, the entire room existed inside one frozen moment.
The flowers in her hand.
The phone still glowing in her palm.
The fear on her face.
And the realization spreading through her eyes.
She had said too much.
Not everything.
But enough.
Enough for someone who knew how to listen.
Jonathan stepped into the room and quietly closed the door behind him.
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
Then back at him.
Her perfect expression was gone.
The sympathy.
The concern.
The gentle smile she had practiced for everyone.
Gone.
For the first time, I saw Vanessa Reed without the mask.
And what I saw was someone terrified.
"I think you should leave," Jonathan said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"I don't understand what you're implying.""
Of course.
The denial.
The first defense of someone caught.
"I didn't imply anything," Jonathan replied.
"I simply heard your conversation.""
She looked at me.
"Claire, you know me.""
I almost felt something.
Almost.
Because she was right.
I did know her.
I knew how she laughed when she was uncomfortable.
I knew how she touched her necklace when she was lying.
I knew how she tilted her head when she wanted people to believe she was innocent.
And right now, she was doing all of it.
"Do I?"" I whispered.
The question hit harder than an accusation.
Her expression changed.
"Claire...""
"No.""
My voice was weak.
But it was mine.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Don't say my name like you still care.""
Silence.
For a moment, Vanessa looked hurt.
A part of me hated that.
Because I remembered all the years before this.
The sleepovers.
The holidays.
The conversations at midnight.
The secrets we shared.
She wasn't a stranger.
That was what made it worse.
A stranger can't break your heart like that.
Only someone you let close can.
"I was there for you," Vanessa said quietly.
I stared at her.
"Yes.""
Her eyes softened.
"I was.""
I nodded.
"You were.""
She looked relieved.
Until I finished.
"You were there so you could watch.""
The relief disappeared.
Jonathan stepped forward.
"Ms. Reed, I suggest you don't say anything else without legal counsel.""
She looked at him.
"Legal counsel?""
A small laugh escaped her.
"This is ridiculous.""
"Is it?""
Jonathan opened his folder.
"Because I have several questions.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"What questions?""
"For example...""
He looked at the documents.
"Why did you sign a purchase agreement for a property you don't own?""
Silence.
Her lips parted.
But no answer came.
Jonathan continued.
"Why were you communicating with Daniel about transferring Claire's assets before Claire's medical evaluation was complete?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Claire, this isn't what you think.""
I almost smiled.
That sentence.
People always used it when it was exactly what you thought.
"Then tell me what it is.""
She hesitated.
"Daniel and I were trying to protect you.""
Protect me.
The words were almost funny.
"By selling my house?""
"No.""
"By taking control of my accounts?""
"No.""
"By deciding my future while I was unconscious?""
Her face tightened.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation.
Only excuses.
After Vanessa left, I couldn't stop shaking.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was angry.
Anger is strange.
People think anger gives you strength.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes it just shows you everything you lost.
My marriage.
My friendship.
The life I thought I had.
Emma came in an hour later.
She took one look at my face.
"What happened?""
I told her.
Every word.
Every detail.
When I finished, she sat silently.
Then she whispered:
"I hate that I believed her.""
I looked at my sister.
"What do you mean?""
"Vanessa.""
Emma looked down.
"After the accident, she was the one who called me every day.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did she say?""
"She said Daniel was devastated.""
Of course.
"She said you were lucky to have him.""
I closed my eyes.
Emma continued.
"She told me you two had been struggling for months.""
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Struggling.""
A word used by people who wanted to hide the truth.
"Did you believe her?""
Emma shook her head.
"Not completely.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because she cried too much.""
I frowned.
Emma looked at me.
"I know that sounds strange.""
"No.""
"It wasn't real sadness.""
My sister swallowed.
"It was like she was performing grief.""
I remembered Vanessa beside my hospital bed.
The flowers.
The touching.
The whispers.
A performance.
Emma continued.
"And then I found something.""
"What?""
She pulled out her phone.
"An email.""
She opened it.
"From Vanessa's account.""
I stared at the screen.
"What does it say?""
Emma hesitated.
"Claire...""
"Read it.""
She did.
"'Everything is moving faster than expected. Daniel says the doctor believes she may not recover. We need to finish before she wakes up.''"
My chest tightened.
Before she wakes up.
They knew.
They knew there was a possibility.
And they were rushing.
"Date?""
Emma looked at the screen.
"The day after your accident.""
The day after.
Before doctors knew anything.
Before anyone knew if I would wake up.
They were already planning.
Jonathan arrived while we were reviewing the email.
When he saw our faces, he knew something had happened.
"What did you find?""
Emma handed him the phone.
He read silently.
Then his expression changed.
"This is important.""
"How important?""
"Very.""
He looked at me.
"This shows intent.""
The word mattered.
Intent.
Not a mistake.
Not confusion.
Not a misunderstanding.
A plan.
"What about the house?""
Jonathan placed the phone down.
"I can file an emergency request to freeze the sale.""
"Do it.""
He nodded.
"But there's something else.""
"What?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"The power of attorney hearing.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"When?""
"Tomorrow.""
Already.
Of course.
Daniel wanted it done before I could recover.
"Can I attend?""
Jonathan shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because you're still medically fragile.""
I looked at him.
"I am awake.""
"I know.""
"But they can still use my condition against me.""
He didn't answer.
Because he knew I was right.
"I need to be there.""
Jonathan looked at Emma.
Then back at me.
Finally, he nodded.
"Then we prepare.""
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Not because of pain.
Because of memories.
Twenty-two years.
That was what kept hurting.
Not the affair.
Not the documents.
Not even the house.
The time.
The years I gave him.
The moments I now questioned.
Was our first apartment real?
Was our wedding day real?
Was every "I love you" a lie?
Around midnight, my phone rang.
I didn't recognize the number.
Emma looked at me.
"Don't answer.""
But something inside me said I should.
I picked up.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Claire.""
My blood went cold.
Daniel.
"How did you get this number?""
"You don't need to worry about that.""
His voice was different.
No performance.
No softness.
Just impatience.
"You need to stop talking to Jonathan.""
I stared at the phone.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
The old Daniel was gone.
The husband.
The caring man.
This was the person underneath.
"You don't know what you're doing.""
I almost laughed.
"You mean I don't know what you're doing?""
Silence.
Then:
"Claire, I am trying to make this easier.""
"For who?""
A pause.
"For everyone.""
Everyone.
A convenient word.
"What happens if I don't?""
His breathing changed.
"Don't make this ugly.""
I looked at Emma.
She was listening.
"Ugly?""
I whispered.
"You stole my bracelet.""
Silence.
"You tried to sell my home.""
Nothing.
"You lied to my family.""
His voice lowered.
"Be careful.""
The words were quiet.
But they weren't a warning.
They were a threat.
And I heard it.
Clearly.
"You don't know everything," Daniel said.
Then he hung up.
I stared at the phone.
Emma looked frightened.
"Claire...""
I looked at her.
For the first time since waking up, I wasn't wondering what Daniel was capable of.
I knew.
But there was one thing he didn't know.
The call had been recorded.
Because Jonathan had taught me something years ago.
Always protect yourself.
May you like
And tomorrow, in that hearing room...
Daniel was finally going to learn that the woman he thought he buried had been collecting evidence the entire time.
