Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Birthday Cake

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Daniel stood beside his chair with the bill folder open in his hands. The paper trembled slightly, though whether from anger or embarrassment, I couldn't tell.

“What other account?”” he demanded.

Robert dabbed his mouth with his napkin.

“The account you told me Claire had agreed to fund.””

Daniel turned toward his father so quickly that his chair scraped backward.

“Dad, not now.””

Robert's expression didn't change.

“Why not? You've spent the entire evening talking about family loyalty. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate yours.””

Vanessa glanced between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel snapped the bill folder shut.

“Nothing. Dad misunderstood a business conversation.””

Robert looked at me.

“Did Daniel tell you he wanted to use your savings to finance his new development project?””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

Daniel's mouth fell open.

“Claire, listen to me.””

I turned toward him.

“You told your father I agreed to fund something?””

“It's not what it sounds like.””

“Then explain what it sounds like.””

He looked around the room, suddenly aware that every relative was listening.

“Can we please discuss this privately?””

Robert shook his head.

“No. You brought twenty-two people here to celebrate my birthday. You can answer a simple question in front of them.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Dad, Daniel works incredibly hard. Whatever arrangement they have, it's between husband and wife.””

“An arrangement requires two people to agree,” Robert replied.

“Exactly,” I said.

Daniel glared at me.

“Could you stop making everything sound like a courtroom?””

“I asked you who was paying for dinner. You told me I would. I asked whether you had promised my money to your father. You still haven't answered.””

Mark quietly moved Vanessa's expensive handbag away from the edge of the table.

Nobody laughed now.

Robert leaned back in his chair.

“Daniel told me six weeks ago that Claire had approved a $150,000 investment in a property project. He said the money would be transferred after my birthday.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars?””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“It was a preliminary discussion!””

“You told me the money was secured,” Robert said.

“I said it was likely.””

“You said, and I quote, ‘Claire wants to help us build something for the family.’”

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“Because she does want to help the family!””

I looked at him.

“Daniel, I have never agreed to invest $150,000 in anything.””

He stared at me as though I had betrayed him.

“You said you wanted us to buy an investment property someday.””

“I said I wanted to discuss buying a property together. I never said I would give you $150,000.””

“It's not giving it to me. It's investing!””

“With whom? Under what agreement? In which property?””

His silence answered before he did.

Robert reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“I brought this because I intended to discuss the project with you tonight, Claire. I assumed you had already reviewed the proposal.””

He passed it across the table.

I unfolded the document.

It was a preliminary investment summary for a commercial property outside Nashville. The purchase price was listed as $620,000. Daniel's company would manage the renovations, while an unnamed investor would contribute $150,000 toward the acquisition.

My name appeared on the last page.

Claire Mitchell — Initial Capital Contribution: $150,000.

Beneath it was a typed statement indicating that I had expressed my intention to participate.

I read it twice.

“I've never seen this document.””

Robert's face tightened.

“That's what I was afraid of.””

Daniel reached for the paper.

“Give me that.””

I pulled it away.

“No.””

His eyes widened.

“What did you just say?””

“I said no.””

It was a small word.

But I watched it land on him like a physical blow.

Vanessa stood.

“This is ridiculous. Daniel wouldn't put Claire's name on something without talking to her.””

I looked at her.

“Would you like to explain why he told everyone I was paying for dinner before I agreed?””

“That is completely different.””

“Is it?””

“Yes! Dinner is dinner. This is a business proposal.””

“Both involve my money.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Robert tapped the table with one finger.

“Daniel, I want a direct answer. Did Claire authorize you to use her name in this proposal?””

Daniel stared at the carpet.

“No signature was required at this stage.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“Dad, you're making this sound criminal.””

“I asked whether she agreed.””

Daniel looked at me.

For one moment, I saw the familiar calculation behind his eyes. He was searching for a version of the truth that would make me responsible for his choices.

Then he found one.

“Claire and I have talked about investing together for years. I thought she would support the project once she understood it.””

I slowly folded the paper.

“Then why did you tell your father I had already approved the money?””

He said nothing.

“Why did you put my name on this document?””

“Because you're my wife!””

The sudden volume of his voice startled a cousin at the far end of the table.

Daniel lowered his tone.

“We're married. We share a future. I shouldn't have to get permission every time I want to do something that could benefit us.””

“Then why didn't you ask me?””

His jaw worked.

“Because you always say no before you understand anything.””

I almost laughed.

For six years, I had said yes to expenses I couldn't afford comfortably, events I didn't want to attend, and financial requests that arrived with emotional threats attached.

Now that I had refused one major commitment, Daniel was presenting me as an unreasonable woman who never supported him.

Robert rose slowly from his chair.

“Sit down, Daniel.””

“Dad—”

“Sit down.””

Daniel remained standing for another moment before dropping into his seat.

Robert turned to me.

“Claire, I owe you an apology. I should have verified this with you before believing what my son told me.””

“Thank you,” I said.

He nodded, then faced Daniel.

“I have another question. What happened to the $75,000 I lent your company last year?””

The room went completely still.

Daniel's face changed.

“What does that have to do with this?””

“Everything, apparently.””

“You said that loan was between us.””

“It was. Until you told me you needed the money to complete the renovations on a property your company had already contracted to finish.””

“I did need it.””

“Then why did your company account show a transfer of $42,000 to another account two days later?””

Daniel's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“That was a supplier payment.””

“Which supplier?””

“Dad, I don't have those records in front of me.””

“I do.””

Robert reached into his jacket again.

This time, he removed a thin folder.

Daniel stared at it.

I noticed something then that frightened me more than the investment proposal.

My husband wasn't merely embarrassed.

He was afraid of what his father might reveal next.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is unbelievable. It's Dad's birthday, and we're sitting here discussing business records.””

Robert looked at her.

“You're right. It is my birthday. And for years, I've allowed this family to avoid uncomfortable conversations because I wanted everyone to get along.””

He glanced at the untouched cake.

“I'm done doing that.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“Daniel, I want you to explain these transfers.””

Daniel didn't touch it.

Instead, he turned to me.

“Claire, can we leave? We can talk about this at home.””

I studied his face.

“Why?””

“Because this is between us.””

“You made it everyone's business when you told your father I had approved a $150,000 investment.””

He leaned closer.

“You're my wife. You're supposed to be on my side.””

I thought about all the nights I had spent reconciling bank statements while he watched television. I thought about the $38,416.72 I had spent on his family, the $61,000 I had lent him, and the way he had laughed when Vanessa called me a walking credit card.

“I was on your side for six years,” I said.

“You just got used to standing on top of me.””

A cousin looked down at his plate.

Mark quietly whispered Vanessa's name, but she ignored him.

Daniel's face flushed.

“You're making me look like a liar.””

“I didn't write the proposal.””

He pushed his chair back again.

“Fine. You want the truth? The property deal isn't ready.

That's all. I was trying to get everything in place before I presented it properly.””

“Then why did you tell your father I had already agreed?””

“Because I needed him to believe we could move forward!””

The admission came out before he could stop it.

Robert closed his eyes.

For the first time that night, he looked old.

Not seventy years old.

Exhausted.

“I see,” he murmured.

Daniel immediately tried to recover.

“I meant I needed him to understand the potential. The numbers are solid. The opportunity is real.””

Robert opened the folder.

“Then you'll have no problem explaining why your company received $75,000 from me, why only $33,000 went to the renovation contractor, and where the remaining $42,000 went.””

Daniel looked at the folder as if it were a loaded weapon.

“I'll explain it tomorrow.””

“No,” Robert said.

“You'll explain it now.””

The waiter appeared at the doorway, holding a small tray with the birthday cake.

He hesitated when he saw the expressions around the table.

“Should I bring this in, sir?””

Robert looked at the cake, then at his son.

“Yes. Please.””

The waiter placed it in the center of the table. White frosting covered the top, and silver lettering spelled out Happy 70th Birthday, Robert.

Nobody sang.

Robert picked up the folder and slid one page toward Daniel.

“Tell us where the money went.””

Daniel stared at the page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She suddenly became very interested in the clasp of her handbag.

It was a tiny movement, but I noticed it.

So did Robert.

His gaze followed his son's to his daughter's face.

“Vanessa,” he said slowly.

“Why are you looking at your brother like that?””

She froze.

“I’m not.””

“Then you won't mind answering a question.””

“Dad, I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Robert pulled another sheet from the folder.

“This transfer was made to a company registered in your name.””

Vanessa's face turned white.

Daniel shot to his feet.

“Dad, don't.””

Robert placed the document beside the birthday cake.

The amount was $28,500.

The recipient was a company called VJ Lifestyle Consulting.

Vanessa gripped the edge of the table.

Mark stared at her.

“What is that?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped between his father and his sister.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

But Robert wasn't looking at Daniel anymore.

He was looking at Vanessa.

“Tell me why your brother's company transferred twenty-eight thousand five hundred dollars to your business three days after I gave him the renovation loan.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No sound came out.

May you like

Then Mark slowly removed his wedding ring and placed it beside his plate.

“Vanessa,” he whispered, “what did you do?””
