Chapter 8: The Night Everyone Told A Different Story
Daniel’s voice echoed through the house.
“Ask your father-in-law why he never told you about the night he almost died.””
Nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
Arthur stared at the bedroom door.
Jonathan’s face had gone completely still.
And I…
I felt something I couldn’t explain.
Because for the first time since Arthur opened his eyes, I wondered if there was another truth.
Not because I believed Daniel.
But because I had learned one thing about secrets.
They always had layers.
“Arthur,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
The sadness in his eyes told me everything before he spoke.
“There is more.””
My stomach dropped.
Daniel knocked once.
Slowly.
Like he had all the time in the world.
“Dad?””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Don’t let him in.””
I nodded.
But Daniel was already inside.
The front door opened.
His footsteps moved through the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
Like a man who believed he still controlled the room.
Jonathan quietly moved toward the office.
“What are you doing?”” I whispered.
“Finding the original document.””
“You think it’s still here?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“Then where?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Somewhere Daniel can’t reach.””
Before I could ask more, Daniel appeared at the bedroom doorway.
He looked different.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Calm.
That was worse.
His eyes moved from Arthur to Jonathan.
Then to me.
“So.””
He nodded slightly.
“The family reunion is complete.””
Arthur looked at him.
“Where is your mother?””
Daniel smiled.
“You still care about her?””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“She’s your mother.””
“And she betrayed you.””
The words hung in the air.
I stared at Daniel.
“What happened between you two?””
Daniel ignored me.
He looked at Arthur.
“You should have told her.””
Arthur’s voice was weak.
“Told her what?””
“The truth.””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“The truth about what happened that night.””
Jonathan moved forward.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Daniel raised a hand.
“You don’t get to rewrite history anymore.””
His eyes went to me.
“Marissa, do you know what happened after my father collapsed?””
I didn’t answer.
“He was found on the kitchen floor.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You know the version everyone was given.””
I felt my heart tighten.
“What version?””
“The version where my father was a victim.””
Arthur looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The guilt.””
I stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You really don’t see it, do you?””
“See what?””
“My father has spent his entire life making everyone believe he’s the good one.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Why? Because I’m finally saying what nobody else wanted to?””
He walked closer.
“Tell her.””
Arthur said nothing.
Daniel smiled.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Arthur.
“Tell me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Arthur spoke.
“Twenty years ago, I made a mistake.””
My chest tightened.
“What kind of mistake?””
He looked at Daniel.
“I protected the wrong people.””
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
Arthur continued.
“I thought I was saving my family.””
“And?””
“I was helping them hide.””
Daniel looked surprised.
Almost angry.
“You’re actually admitting it?””
Arthur looked at him.
“I’m admitting my failure.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Ask him about Jonathan.””
I looked at Jonathan.
He had stopped searching.
“Ask him what happened to the money.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“Tell her.””
I looked between them.
“What money?””
Jonathan finally spoke.
“The missing money.””
Daniel laughed.
“Not missing.””
The room went quiet.
“Stolen.””
My breath caught.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“Tell her who did it.””
Arthur looked exhausted.
“Daniel.””
“Tell her.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Arthur said:
“Jonathan.””
I froze.
Jonathan looked down.
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Arthur’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Jonathan took the money.””
The room changed.
Everything I thought I understood shifted.
I looked at Jonathan.
“You did?””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“Arthur…”
“No.””
Arthur looked at him.
“Not anymore.””
Daniel smiled.
“There it is.””
I stared at Jonathan.
“You betrayed him?””
Jonathan’s face was full of regret.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Why?””
He looked at Arthur.
“Because I was desperate.””
“That doesn’t explain stealing.””
“No.””
He lowered his head.
“It doesn’t.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And yet my father still protected him.””
I looked at Arthur.
“Why?””
Arthur’s expression broke.
“Because Jonathan came to me.””
“What?””
“He confessed.””
Jonathan nodded.
“I told him everything.””
Arthur continued.
“He was being blackmailed.””
Daniel laughed.
“Here we go.””
“By who?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Arthur looked at Daniel.
My heart sank.
“Daniel?””
Daniel’s face became cold.
“You’re blaming me?””
“I’m telling the truth.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You always do this.””
“Do what?””
“Make yourself the hero.””
Arthur looked hurt.
“I’m not the hero.””
“Then admit it.””
“Admit what?””
“That you knew.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Arthur.
“Knew what?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Knew what Jonathan did.””
Arthur didn’t respond.
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“You knew he stole the money.””
Arthur nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“But why hide it?””
Arthur looked at me.
“Because I knew who forced him.””
“And?””
“I was afraid.””
That shocked me.
Arthur.
The man everyone described as strong.
Was afraid.
“Of Daniel?””
Arthur looked at his son.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
A tiny crack appeared.
Because he wasn’t expecting that answer.
“You were afraid of me?””
Arthur nodded.
“I had already lost one son.””
The words hit Daniel harder than anything else.
“What does that mean?””
Arthur looked away.
“It means the man I raised was gone.””
Daniel stared.
Then he laughed.
A broken laugh.
“So that’s it?””
“What?””
“You never loved me.””
Arthur’s face softened.
“That isn’t true.””
“Then why did you leave everything to strangers?””
“I didn’t.””
“Then why did you hide money from me?””
“Because you proved I needed to.””
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
Arthur looked at him.
“I think you’re capable of becoming better.””
For a moment, Daniel said nothing.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
He answered.
“What?””
Silence.
Then:
“Where?””
I watched his face.
Something was wrong.
“What happened?””
Daniel ended the call.
He looked at Arthur.
Then Jonathan.
Then me.
“Teresa is gone.””
Nobody spoke.
“What do you mean gone?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“She left.””
“Where?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“She took the original will.””
My heart stopped.
Jonathan immediately stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Teresa didn’t know where it was.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
“She knew more than you thought.””
Arthur’s face went pale.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Arthur looked terrified.
“Teresa wouldn’t know.””
Daniel watched him.
“You still underestimate her.””
Then Daniel walked toward the door.
I followed him with my eyes.
“Where are you going?””
He stopped.
Without turning around, he said:
“To get back what belongs to me.””
I felt a chill.
“Daniel.””
He looked over his shoulder.
And for the first time, he looked almost defeated.
“You still think this is about money.””
Then he left.
The house became silent.
I looked at Arthur.
“What did he mean?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
Jonathan did.
“It was never just about money.””
“What was it about?””
Arthur looked toward the office.
“The original will wasn’t hidden because of the inheritance.””
“Then why?””
Arthur swallowed.
“Because the will contains a confession.””
My heart raced.
“Whose confession?””
Arthur looked at me.
“Mine.””
I stared.
“What did you confess?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“The truth about the night I almost died.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Then Arthur whispered:
“The person who saved my life…”
May you like
He looked toward the closed door.
“…was the same person who tried to take it.””
