Chapter 6: The Lie With a Signature
The room felt smaller after I saw the document.
Not because the walls had moved.
Not because anything had physically changed.
But because I finally understood the size of what I was facing.
Daniel wasn’t making a mistake.
He wasn’t acting out of panic.
He wasn’t a scared new father who didn’t know what to do.
He was building a story.
A story where I was the danger.
A story where he was the responsible parent.
A story where every person who trusted him could become a piece of evidence against me.
I stared at the photo Dr. Walsh had sent.
Her signature.
Her name.
Her professional information.
Everything looked real.
Except one thing.
She said she never approved it.
“Sarah,” I whispered.
She immediately picked up the paper.
“Don’t touch the original.””
“It’s just a photo.””
“I know. But don’t forward it. Don’t edit it. Don’t do anything that could create questions about where it came from.””
Even now, even with everything falling apart, Sarah was calm.
Focused.
That was what I needed.
“What does this mean?””
She studied the image.
“It means we need to verify exactly what happened.””
“Someone forged her signature?””
“Possibly.””
“Who else could have done it?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Ava, right now we don’t assume. We investigate.””
I nodded.
The old me would have wanted answers immediately.
The old me would have called Daniel and demanded the truth.
The old me would have screamed.
But the woman sitting in that hospital bed was different.
Because I had Grace.
And every decision I made now affected her.
“What do we do first?””
Sarah opened her folder.
“First, we protect you.””
“How?””
“Your medical records. Your hospital access. Your communication with Daniel.””
She began writing notes.
“Second, we determine who had access to this document.””
“Can we prove it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked at me.
“Because signatures leave trails.””
A strange sense of relief moved through me.
For the first time, Daniel’s confidence seemed less frightening.
He had spent months controlling the story.
But stories could be checked.
Documents could be questioned.
People could be asked what they really did.
Sarah continued.
“Did Dr. Walsh tell you she signed anything?””
“No.””
“Did she tell you she submitted anything?””
“No.””
“Then we need her official statement.””
I looked at my phone.
The message from Dr. Walsh was still open.
“She’s scared.””
Sarah glanced at me.
“Why?””
“Because she realized Daniel used her.””
“That matters.””
“Why?””
“Because people who realize they’ve been manipulated often become the strongest witnesses.””
I looked at the document again.
For months, I had been afraid of losing.
Now I was starting to see something else.
Daniel had made so many moves.
And every move left something behind.
A message.
A record.
A witness.
A mistake.
A few hours later, Dr. Walsh arrived.
Not as my doctor.
Not as the person in charge.
As someone who knew she had been pulled into something she didn’t understand.
She stood in the doorway looking exhausted.
“Ava.””
I nodded.
“Come in.””
Sarah stood beside me.
“This is Attorney Sarah Thorne.””
Dr. Walsh nodded.
“I know.””
The three words immediately caught my attention.
“You know her?””
Dr. Walsh looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel mentioned her.””
“When?””
“Before today.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“He asked me if you had already contacted legal counsel.””
Sarah and I exchanged a glance.
“When did he ask you that?”” Sarah questioned.
“Three weeks ago.””
Three weeks.
Before Grace was born.
Before Daniel entered my hospital room.
Before the custody papers.
“He was preparing,” I whispered.
Dr. Walsh nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought he was worried.””
“Worried?””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
“He told me you were under pressure. That pregnancy had been difficult. That you were having emotional reactions.””
I almost laughed.
“Emotional reactions to what?””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt.
Because she was admitting the truth.
She didn’t know.
Daniel had given her a version of me.
And she accepted it.
“What did he show you?””
Dr. Walsh hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
“I brought something.””
She handed Sarah a folder.
My heart started beating faster.
“What is that?””
“Everything Daniel sent me.””
Sarah opened it.
The first page was a printed conversation.
I recognized the style immediately.
My messages.
Private messages.
Between Daniel and me.
But something was wrong.
Sarah noticed it too.
“These are incomplete.””
Dr. Walsh nodded.
“Yes.””
“He only gave you selected parts.””
“Yes.””
I looked closer.
The messages showed moments where I was upset.
Moments where I complained.
Moments where I admitted I was scared.
But the context was missing.
The conversations before them.
The conversations after.
The moments where Daniel apologized.
The moments where he caused the problem.
He had removed everything that explained the truth.
“He edited my life,” I whispered.
Sarah looked at me.
“That’s exactly what he did.””
Dr. Walsh covered her face for a moment.
“I feel terrible.””
I wanted to be angry.
Part of me was angry.
But I also saw something else.
A person who had made a mistake.
A mistake that could have destroyed my family.
“Doctor, I need your help.””
She looked at me.
“I’ll do whatever I can.””
“Will you write a statement?””
“Yes.””
“Will you explain that you did not authorize that document?””
“Yes.””
Sarah nodded.
“Good.””
Dr. Walsh looked at the papers again.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out an email.
“I found this after Daniel contacted me.””
Sarah took it.
“What is it?””
“A message from someone at the hospital.””
My chest tightened.
“Someone at the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Dr. Walsh looked at the email.
“I don’t know.””
Sarah read silently.
Then her expression changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
The email said:
*Doctor Walsh, attached is the information requested regarding Ava Carter. Please review before signing.*
My hands went cold.
“Before signing.””
“Yes,” Sarah said.
“She was sent a document already prepared.””
“So Daniel wrote it?””
“Maybe.””
Sarah pointed to the email address.
“This came from an internal hospital account.””
My heart dropped.
“Someone inside helped him.””
No one answered.
Because this was no longer just about Daniel.
It was bigger.
Someone had access.
Someone had information.
Someone had been quietly helping him create a case against me.
Dr. Walsh stood.
“I’m going to report this.””
Sarah nodded.
“Good.””
Before she left, she turned back to me.
“Ava.””
“Yes?””
“I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“When Daniel first contacted me, he never asked if you and the baby were safe.””
My throat tightened.
“What did he ask?””
Dr. Walsh looked at Grace.
Then back at me.
“He asked how quickly he could establish temporary custody.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
Hearing them from someone else made them real.
After Dr. Walsh left, Sarah packed the documents carefully.
“You need rest.””
I shook my head.
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“No.””
I looked at Grace.
“I spent months thinking I was building a family.””
My voice cracked.
“And he was building a case.””
Sarah sat beside me.
“Ava.””
“Yes?””
“Don’t let his actions convince you that you’re powerless.””
I looked at her.
“You know what scares me?””
“What?””
“That he knows me.””
Sarah waited.
I continued.
“He knows what hurts me. He knows what scares me. He knows exactly how to make me doubt myself.””
“That’s true.””
I looked down.
“But he forgot something.””
“What?””
I touched Grace’s tiny hand.
“He knows the old Ava.””
Sarah smiled slightly.
“And who is the new Ava?””
I looked at my daughter.
“The one who doesn’t have the luxury of giving up.””
That night, I finally slept for a few hours.
Not peacefully.
But enough.
At sunrise, my phone rang.
It was the hospital administrator.
“Ava?””
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry to wake you.””
“What happened?””
“There was an issue with your records.””
My heart immediately raced.
“What kind of issue?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone attempted to remove access restrictions from your file.””
I sat up.
“Who?””
“We’re investigating.””
“Do you know when?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
The administrator hesitated.
“Last night.””
I looked at Sarah.
She was already awake, watching my face.
“Who tried?””
The administrator lowered her voice.
“Ava…”
“Yes?””
“The request came from an account belonging to someone on your medical team.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then she said the name.
And this time, I knew exactly why Daniel had been so confident.
Because the person helping him wasn’t just someone inside the hospital.
It was someone who had been standing beside me from the beginning.

My own nurse.
The woman who held Grace the first time she entered the world.
