Chapter 2: The Handbag
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Zoe’s tiny finger stayed pointed at Vanessa.
“She took my pouch.””
Her voice was barely a whisper, but in that silent room, everyone heard it.
Vanessa stared at her.
Then she laughed.
It was too quick.
Too high.
“Oh, sweetheart,” Vanessa said, shaking her head.
“You’re frightened. You don’t know what you’re saying.””
Zoe’s hand trembled.
“I saw you.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“You were near her?””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Of course I was near her. She’s your daughter. Everyone was near her.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was checking the desserts.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked at Vanessa.
The paramedic beside Zoe spoke sharply.
“We need that medication now. Whatever is in that bag, open it.””
Vanessa tightened her grip on the handbag.
“I told you, it’s personal.””
The paramedic stood.
“This is not about privacy anymore.””
Vanessa backed away.
“Why is everyone treating me like I did something?””
I stared at the bag.
Because she had reacted before anyone had accused her.
Because Zoe had pointed at it.
Because when I asked where it was, Vanessa’s first instinct had been to hide it.
And because I had just remembered something.
Earlier that afternoon, Vanessa had offered to help me unpack the dessert boxes.
I had said no.
She had smiled and walked away.
Then, about twenty minutes before Zoe started crying, I had seen her standing beside Zoe’s lavender backpack.
At the time, I thought she was admiring the little silver keychain hanging from the zipper.
Now I wasn't so sure.
“Marcus,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
“Open the bag.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“I don't have anything that belongs to Zoe.””
Zoe coughed again.
The paramedic immediately turned back.
“Everyone step away. Give us room.””
Marcus moved beside his daughter.
“Zoe, stay awake.””
She nodded weakly.
I knelt beside her.
“You’re doing so well, sweetheart.””
She grabbed two of my fingers.
“Don’t go.””
“I’m not going anywhere.””
Across the room, Marcus spoke again.
“Vanessa, hand me the bag.””
She looked at him.
“You don't trust me?””
“Right now, I trust my daughter.””
Something flashed across Vanessa’s face.
Anger.
Real anger.
Then it disappeared.
She slowly set the handbag on the table.
“Fine.””
I watched her hands.
She unzipped it.
Nothing happened.
Vanessa started pulling things out one by one.
A wallet.
Lipstick.
A small perfume bottle.
A phone charger.
A compact mirror.
She looked at Marcus triumphantly.
“See?””
Then she lifted the entire bag and turned it upside down.
Nothing fell out.
“Happy?””
Marcus stared at the empty table.
The paramedic looked at me.
“Are you certain the medication was in there?””
“Yes,” I said.
“I packed it.””
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
“There. That settles it.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She stopped smiling.
“What's that supposed to mean?””
“You didn't empty the inside pocket.””
Her eyes flicked toward the handbag.
Just once.
It was enough.
The zipper was on the inside wall, hidden behind the lining.
Vanessa reached for it.
I stood.
“Wait.””
She froze.
“Why?””
“Because you knew exactly where I was looking.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Give me the bag.””
Vanessa held it against her chest.
“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””
“Give me the bag.””
“You're humiliating me in front of everyone.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“You're doing that yourself.””
His voice was quiet now.
That scared me more than when he had shouted at me.
Vanessa stared at him for several seconds.
Then she handed him the bag.
Marcus opened the inner compartment.
His hand disappeared inside.
He pulled out a pink pouch.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
I recognized it immediately.
The little embroidered butterfly on the front.
The purple zipper.
The name tag.
Zoe Grace Ellison.
My heart dropped.
“Oh my God.””
Marcus stared at it.
His expression emptied.
The paramedic crossed the room in two strides.
“That's it?””
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“Give it to me.””
He handed it over.
The paramedic opened the pouch.
“Perfect. This is what we need.””
He quickly administered the medication while his partner monitored Zoe.
Her breathing was still rough, but within moments, the panic in her eyes began to soften.
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
Marcus didn't move.
He was still staring at Vanessa’s handbag.
Then he looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Not now.””
He looked like I had slapped him.
But I didn't care.
My daughter was fighting for air ten feet away.
And I was done pretending the damage was only tonight.
The paramedic checked Zoe again.
“We need to take her in for observation.””
Marcus nodded.
“I’m going with her.””
He crouched and kissed Zoe’s forehead.
“I’m right here, baby.””
Zoe nodded.
Then her eyes opened wider.
She looked toward Vanessa.
“The other thing.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What other thing?”” Marcus asked.
Zoe swallowed.
“Her purse.””
“I know,” he said gently.
“We found your medicine.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her finger lifted.
“The other thing she took.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
“What are you talking about?””
Zoe looked at me.
“She took Grace’s card too.””
My breath caught.
“My card?””
Zoe nodded.
“Your work card.””
I stared at Vanessa.
She took one step backward.
Marcus turned toward her.
“What card?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know what she means.””
Zoe’s lips trembled.
“She put it in the little pocket.””
Marcus walked back to the handbag.
“Which pocket?””
Zoe pointed.
“Inside.””
He opened the compartment again.
He reached down.
His fingers touched something hard.
He pulled it out.
My access badge.
The white plastic card I used to enter the Ellison estate and the private staff areas of the house.
My photo was on it.
My name was underneath.
GRACE MILLER.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus looked at me.
“Why was your badge in her bag?””
I couldn't answer.
I didn't know.
I took one step toward Vanessa.
“You stole my badge?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
“No.””
“It was in your bag.””
“I don't know how it got there.””
“You don't know?””
“No.””
Marcus held the badge between two fingers.
“This is yours?””
“Yes.””
“When did you last have it?””
“This morning.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That proves nothing.””
I turned toward her.
“It proves you had access to the house.””
“So does everyone here!””
“No,” I said.
“Not to the staff entrance.””
She went silent.
Marcus looked down at the badge again.
“What were you planning to do with this?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why did you have it?””
“I told you. I don't know.””
The paramedic spoke from across the room.
“We need to leave now.””
Marcus nodded.
He looked at Vanessa one last time.
“We're not finished.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You're really accusing me based on what a six-year-old said?””
Zoe suddenly spoke.
“I saw you.””
Vanessa stared at her.
Zoe continued.
“You took it when Mommy went outside.””
I felt a chill move through me.
I had gone outside.
At exactly 7:42.
I remembered because I had checked my phone after one of the caterers asked me to sign for an extra delivery.
I had been gone maybe three minutes.
Vanessa had known.
She had known exactly when I left.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What happened during those three minutes?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Nothing.””
Zoe pointed again.
“You opened my backpack.””
Vanessa's lips tightened.
“You're confused.””
“I saw you.””
“You were at the dessert table.””
“I was looking for Mommy.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don't understand—”
“Don't touch her.””
Marcus’s voice was so cold that Vanessa stopped immediately.
He moved between them.
The paramedics began wheeling Zoe toward the door.
I walked beside her.
She reached for my hand.
I held it.
“I'm right here.””
“I know.””
At the doorway, Marcus stopped.
He looked back at the room.
At Vanessa.
At the open handbag.
At the missing pouch now resting beside Zoe.
Then his eyes landed on the access badge still in his hand.
His face hardened.
“Who else knew Grace would be outside at 7:42?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
And that was when Marcus noticed something on the marble beside the dessert table.
A tiny silver key.
He bent down and picked it up.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the key to the locked office drawer where we kept Zoe’s medical records and emergency plans.
My stomach twisted.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He looked at the key.
Then at Vanessa.
“You had this too?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
The ambulance doors slammed outside.
And just before Marcus followed us out, his phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
A security alert had arrived.
Someone had used my stolen access badge less than twenty minutes earlier.
May you like
And the location attached to it was not the house.
It was the one room in the estate where no one—not even Vanessa—was supposed to go.
