Chapter 5: The Man Who Claimed My Daughter
The property stood behind a row of tall oak trees, nearly twenty miles outside the city.
It was an old country estate with iron gates, stone walls, and security cameras mounted beneath the roof.
I had driven past it once.
Nathan had pointed toward it and joked that people with too much money eventually ran out of things to buy, so they started purchasing empty houses.
I remembered laughing.
Now I was sitting in a car outside those gates, holding an envelope that could destroy my family.
Daniel parked beneath a tree.
"Stay here.""
I turned toward him.
"No.""
"Claire, I don't know how many people Margaret has inside.""
"My daughter is in there.""
"I understand.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice cracked.
"I watched her climb into her father's coffin. I watched her beg a dead man to wake up. I am not sitting in another car while strangers decide what happens to her.""
Daniel stared at me.
Then he nodded.
"All right. But stay close.""
He took a small device from the glove compartment.
"What is that?""
"A recorder.""
He placed it in his jacket pocket.
"If Margaret admits anything, we need proof.""
I looked at the envelope.
"What if she takes it?""
"Then we make sure she says something worth hearing first.""
He stepped out and approached the gate.
A camera turned toward us.
A speaker crackled.
"State your business.""
Daniel leaned toward it.
"Tell Mrs. Harper that Claire has arrived.""
There was a pause.
Then the gates opened.
We drove up the gravel driveway.
The house was enormous.
Three floors of pale stone, tall windows, and a circular driveway surrounding a fountain that wasn't running.
Two men stood outside the entrance.
One recognized me immediately.
"Mrs. Harper.""
I ignored him.
"Where is my daughter?""
He looked toward Daniel.
"Inside.""
I hurried past him.
The entrance hall was decorated with expensive paintings and dark wooden furniture. A crystal chandelier hung above a staircase that curved toward the upper floor.
Then I heard a familiar voice.
"Mommy!""
I turned.
Ellie was standing at the top of the stairs.
Her hair was messy, and she was holding Mr. Buttons tightly against her chest.
"ELLIE!""
She ran down.
I dropped my handbag and caught her in my arms.
I held her so tightly that she squealed.
"Mommy, you came!""
"Of course I came.""
She buried her face in my neck.
"I was scared.""
I kissed her hair repeatedly.
"I'm here. I'm here.""
Then I noticed a red mark around her wrist.
I pulled back.
"Who did this?""
Ellie looked down.
"The man held my hand too tight.""
My stomach turned.
I looked toward the men.
"Nobody touches my daughter again.""
A calm voice came from behind me.
"Claire.""
I turned.
Richard Cole stood near the doorway.
He was older than in the photograph, perhaps in his late forties. His dark hair had begun turning gray at the temples.
The scar beneath his left eye was unmistakable.
He wore a navy suit and a white shirt.
He looked like someone who belonged in a boardroom, not a house where a frightened child had been held against her will.
He approached slowly.
"She's beautiful.""
I tightened my arms around Ellie.
"Don't.""
Richard stopped.
"I understand this is difficult.""
"You kidnapped my daughter.""
"I arranged for her protection.""
"From whom?""
He looked toward Daniel.
"From people who want her money.""
I laughed bitterly.
"She's four years old. She doesn't even know what money is.""
Richard's eyes moved to Ellie.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Ellie hid behind my shoulder.
He lowered himself slightly.
"My name is Richard.""
She didn't answer.
He tried again.
"I'm someone who knew your father.""
I felt my body stiffen.
"Her father is Nathan.""
Richard looked at me.
"Legally, yes.""
I stepped forward.
"Do not say another word about her.""
Daniel moved between us.
"Richard, you agreed to let Claire see Ellie.""
"I have.""
"And now we're leaving.""
Richard shook his head.
"Not yet.""
He gestured toward a sitting room.
"Please. We need to discuss the trust.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slightly.
I carried Ellie into the room.
Richard closed the door behind us.
A large table stood in the center. Several documents were arranged neatly across its surface.
Richard pointed toward a chair.
"Please sit.""
"I'd rather stand.""
He accepted that.
"Claire, I know you have questions.""
"I have one question. Why is my daughter on a birth certificate with Margaret Harper listed as her mother?""
Richard sighed.
"Because Margaret arranged it.""
"Why?""
"She wanted to hide Ellie's identity.""
"From whom?""
"From me.""
I frowned.
"You're her biological father.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you disappear?""
Richard looked toward the window.
"Because I was told my daughter had died.""
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Six months before Ellie was born, I was involved in a legal battle with Margaret. We were business partners. I discovered that she had been transferring money from our joint investments.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Richard, tell her the whole story.""
Richard nodded.
"Margaret was pregnant at the time. She told me the baby had died shortly after birth. She showed me hospital records.
A death certificate. Everything.""
My throat tightened.
"Those records were false?""
"Yes.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Nathan found the original documents.""
I looked at Daniel.
He opened the envelope and removed several papers.
"These are copies of the original hospital records," he said.
"They show that Ellie was born alive and healthy. The death certificate was created using a false registration number.""
I felt sick.
"Why would Nathan know?""
"Because he was working with Richard," Daniel explained.
"Nathan discovered the altered records while investigating the company's financial fraud.""
Richard leaned forward.
"He contacted me six months ago. I wanted to meet Ellie immediately, but Nathan asked me to wait.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed Margaret was dangerous.""
I looked at the man.
"And you agreed to leave my daughter with people who had lied about her birth?""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I agreed because Nathan promised he would keep her safe.""
I felt tears gathering.
"Nathan loved her.""
"More than anything," Richard said quietly.
For the first time, his expression seemed genuine.
He removed a photograph from his pocket.
It showed Nathan holding Ellie as a newborn.
I recognized the hospital blanket.
I recognized the little pink cap.
And I recognized the tears on Nathan's face.
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
"He sent me this after she was born. He wrote that he had never believed a person could love someone else's child so completely.""
My lips trembled.
I remembered Nathan's words when Ellie was born.
I didn't know I could love someone this much.
Now I wondered how much he had hidden from me.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
Richard looked at me.
"Because he was afraid you'd be pulled into the legal fight.""
I shook my head.
"That wasn't his decision to make.""
"No," Richard admitted.
"It wasn't.""
I looked down at Ellie.
She was playing with the buttons on my coat.
"Does she know who you are?""
"No.""
"Then she doesn't need to know today.""
Richard nodded.
"I agree.""
For a moment, I believed we might actually be able to leave.
Then he pushed another document across the table.
"There's something else.""
I looked at it.
It was a trust agreement.
The beneficiary was listed as Eleanor Harper.
Ellie's full name.
The trust value was $62,400,000.
My hands went cold.
"Why are you showing me this?""
"Because Margaret has been trying to gain control of it.""
"How?""
"By proving that Ellie was legally adopted under false pretenses.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
"She wants a court to invalidate Nathan's parental rights. If she succeeds, she intends to claim temporary guardianship and control the trust through a family proxy.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's why she tried to get you to sign the guardianship agreement.""
I remembered the paper Margaret had handed me at the hospital.
My name.
Nathan's name.
Ellie's name.
I felt sick.
"She was trying to make me give her legal authority.""
"Exactly," Daniel said.
Richard continued.
"There's a clause in the original trust. If Ellie is separated from her legal guardians through fraud or coercion, the trustee must freeze all distributions until her identity is independently verified.""
I looked at him.
"So why not just prove the truth?""
Richard's expression darkened.
"Because the trustee has already been compromised.""
"By Margaret?""
He nodded.
"And I believe she's willing to do anything to keep the original records hidden.""
Ellie tugged at my sleeve.
"Mommy?""
I bent down.
"Yes, baby?""
"Can we go home now?""
I kissed her forehead.
"Yes.""
I stood.
"We're leaving.""
Richard didn't move.
"Claire, there's one more thing you need to know.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face tightened.
Then Richard said:
"Nathan isn't the only person Margaret tried to kill.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Who else?""
Richard took a breath.
"Me.""
I stared at the scar beneath his eye.
"Did she arrange your disappearance?""
"She hired someone to make it look like I had left the country. Then she tried to have me killed in a staged boating accident.""
I looked toward the door.
"Then why are you here?""
"Because I survived.""
"And Nathan?""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I don't know how he survived the crash. But I know Margaret won't stop until she has control of everything.""
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the entrance hall.
A man's voice shouted.
"Police! Nobody move!""
Daniel jumped to his feet.
Richard looked toward the door.
Then a familiar voice echoed through the house.
"Claire Harper! Step away from the child!""
I froze.
Two uniformed officers entered the sitting room.
Behind them stood Margaret.
Her face was perfectly calm.
She held a document in one hand.
"Thank goodness," she said.
"We've finally found you.""
I tightened my arms around Ellie.
"What are you doing?""
Margaret looked at the officers.
"That woman has taken my granddaughter without authorization.""
I stared at her.
"You're the one who kidnapped her!""
Margaret shook her head sadly.
"Claire has been under considerable emotional distress. She's confused.""
One officer stepped forward.
"Mrs. Harper, we need you to come with us.""
I looked at Daniel.
He moved toward them.
"Officer, you need to see these documents.""
Margaret immediately interrupted.
"Those papers are fraudulent.""
The second officer took them from Daniel.
He glanced through the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
"Mrs. Harper, is this your signature?""
Margaret looked at the document.
For the first time, she hesitated.
"That's a private business matter.""
The officer raised his eyes.
"These are medical authorization records.""
Margaret's face hardened.
"Those documents have nothing to do with this.""
Then the first officer reached for Ellie.
I stepped backward.
"Don't touch her!""
Ellie began crying.
"Mommy!""
Margaret moved closer.
"Come to Grandma, sweetheart.""
Ellie shook her head violently.
"No!""
Margaret's smile disappeared.
"Ellie, come here.""
My daughter buried her face against my chest.
Then she whispered something that made everyone in the room go silent.
"Grandma said if I didn't call her Mommy, Daddy would get hurt again.""
I felt my blood turn to ice.
I looked at Margaret.
She didn't deny it.
Instead, she turned toward the officers.
"Take the child.""
And then Daniel pulled something from his pocket.
A small silver recorder.
"I think you should hear what she said before you do that.""
He pressed PLAY.
Margaret's voice filled the room.
Bring the child to me. Once Nathan is gone, nobody will be able to prove who she really belongs to.
The officers exchanged glances.
Margaret's face went white.
But before anyone could move, another voice came from the entrance.
"That's enough, Mother.""
I turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
He was pale, walking with difficulty, and leaning heavily on a hospital cane.
His face was bruised.
His eyes were exhausted.
But I recognized him immediately.
Nathan.
My husband.
He had come to get his daughter.
And he had brought someone with him.
A woman in a gray suit carrying a thick legal folder.
May you like
Nathan looked directly at Margaret.
"You're finished.""
