Chapter 8: The Night Elena Disappeared

Margaret remained silent long after the call ended.

The phone was still in her hand.

Her fingers trembled so badly that David gently took it from her.

“Mom.””

She looked up.

“Who was that?””

Margaret said nothing.

“Mom, who was that man?””

Her lips parted.

No sound came out.

David’s patience broke.

“You told me Elena disappeared.””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“You told me you didn't know what happened.””

“I didn't.””

“But he said you did.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“He was telling the truth.””

The words landed like a blow.

David stepped backward.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Margaret looked at the floor.

“Everything.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

Evelyn slowly moved closer.

“Margaret…”

“Not now,” Margaret said.

Her voice was weak but firm.

“This is between me and my son.””

David stared at her.

“My whole life has been built on things you refused to tell me.””

“I know.””

“I believed Dad was my biological father.””

“I know.””

“I believed my mother was dead.””

“I never said she was dead.””

“You let me believe she was.””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the truth would have put you in danger.””

David shook his head.

“Danger from who?””

Margaret looked toward Robert.

He had gone completely still.

“From them.””

David followed her gaze.

“Robert?””

“No.””

Robert’s voice was quiet.

“I didn't hurt Elena.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You helped.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“You lied to her.””

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

Robert stepped forward.

“I did what Richard asked.””

Margaret stared at him.

“No.””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“That's not true.””

“Richard never asked you to make Elena disappear.””

Robert looked at David.

“Your father asked me to keep her away from Jonathan.””

“And you did?””

“Yes.””

“Where did you take her?””

Robert didn't answer.

David's voice sharpened.

“Where?””

“I arranged for her to leave town.””

Margaret shook her head.

“You didn't just arrange it.””

Robert looked at her.

“You don't know what happened.””

“I was there.””

David froze.

“You were there?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I drove her.””

The room went silent.

David stared.

“You drove her away?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed Jonathan was watching the house.””

“When?””

“The night you disappeared.””

David frowned.

“I was a baby.””

“I know.””

“What happened?””

Margaret walked slowly toward the sofa and sat down.

Thomas remained standing nearby.

He seemed to know that this moment belonged to Margaret.

She looked at David.

“It was raining.””

Her voice was soft.

“Your father had gone to the office. Elena came to our house just after midnight.””

Margaret's eyes drifted toward the window as if she could still see it.

“She was carrying you.””

David swallowed.

“What did she say?””

“She said she couldn't stay.””

“Why?””

“She believed Jonathan had found her.””

Margaret's voice shook.

“She begged me to take you.””

David stared.

“Take me where?””

“Anywhere safe.””

A pause.

“She believed if Jonathan couldn't find her, he couldn't find you.””

Margaret wiped a tear away.

“I told her we could go together.””

“What did she say?””

“She said no.””

Margaret looked at David.

“She told me someone needed to stay behind.””

David's chest tightened.

“She gave me to you.””

“Yes.””

“What did Dad do?””

“He came home about an hour later.””

“What did he say?””

“He was furious.””

David's expression changed.

“Because Elena left?””

“Because he realized Jonathan had found out about you.””

Margaret looked down.

“Your father said we had to move you immediately.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“To your uncle's farmhouse.””

Robert looked up.

“You never told him about that.””

Margaret turned toward him.

“You knew.””

“I knew where the farmhouse was.””

“You knew because Richard told you.””

Robert nodded.

“And you were supposed to watch the road.””

David looked at Robert.

“Did you?””

Robert swallowed.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Robert hesitated.

Then he said:

“Jonathan came.””

The room went still.

David stepped closer.

“He came to the farmhouse?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

“He demanded to see Elena.””

“She wasn't there.””

“I know.””

“Then why did he come?””

Robert's face tightened.

“Because someone told him she was.””

David stared.

“Who?””

Robert looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“No.””

David turned to her.

“You told him?””

“I didn't know.””

“You said you didn't know anything.””

“I didn't know you were at the farmhouse.””

“But you knew Elena was there.””

“I knew she was planning to go.””

David's voice became cold.

“And you told Jonathan.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I was scared.””

“That isn't an answer.””

She began crying.

“I thought he would only scare her.””

Margaret stood abruptly.

“Only scare her?””

Evelyn flinched.

“He had a gun.””

Silence.

David stared at her.

“What?””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“He had a gun.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“He did.””

“Why didn't anyone call the police?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Because Jonathan threatened to kill everyone if we did.””

David's face hardened.

“What happened next?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“He found the farmhouse.””

Thomas asked quietly,

“And then?””

Robert hesitated.

“Your father arrived.””

David turned.

“My father?””

“He followed me.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew Jonathan would come.””

Margaret whispered:

“Richard told me to take you and leave through the back.””

“Where did you go?””

“To the old church.””

“And Dad?””

“He stayed.””

David's breath caught.

“What happened to him?””

“He confronted Jonathan.””

Robert's voice cracked.

“There was shouting.””

“Then?””

“A gunshot.””

Margaret covered her face.

David froze.

“You heard a gunshot?””

“Yes.””

“Was Dad shot?””

“No.””

Robert looked at him.

“Richard wasn't.””

David exhaled.

“Then who?””

Robert didn't answer.

Margaret did.

“No one was killed that night.””

David stared at her.

“Then why did everyone act like it was a death?””

Margaret looked toward the laptop.

“Because something worse happened.””

David frowned.

“What?””

“Your father found Elena.””

Robert's face went pale.

“What?””

Margaret nodded.

“After the gunshot, Richard discovered Elena had returned.””

David couldn't speak.

“She had been hiding near the farmhouse.””

“Why?””

“She had changed her mind.””

Margaret's voice broke.

“She wanted to take you and run.””

David felt tears forming.

“What happened?””

“Jonathan saw her.””

Robert whispered,

“He saw both of them.””

“Then what?””

“Richard tried to get Elena away.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Jonathan chased them.””

David looked between them.

“And me?””

“You were with me.””

“Where?””

“Inside the church.””

“Then how did Elena disappear?””

Margaret didn't answer.

David waited.

Finally she whispered:

“Because Jonathan didn't take her.””

David stared.

“Who did?””

Margaret looked at Robert.

Robert's face went gray.

“Robert did.””

David turned slowly.

“You took my mother?””

Robert shook his head.

“I saved her.””

“You took her.””

“I got her away from Jonathan.””

“Where?””

Robert looked down.

“I put her in a car.””

“And?””

“I told her she could never come back.””

David's voice shook.

“Why?””

“Because Jonathan would never stop.””

“And you believed disappearing was the only way?””

“Yes.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“No.””

Robert looked at her.

“You didn't just tell her to disappear.””

Margaret's voice broke.

“You told her David would be killed if she returned.””

David stared.

“That isn't true.””

Robert looked at him.

“I thought it would keep her away long enough for everyone to survive.””

“You lied to her.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe she abandoned me.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

David looked like he had been punched.

“Why?””

Robert opened his eyes.

“Because Jonathan wasn't the only person looking for you.””

The room went silent.

David's voice dropped.

“Who else?””

Robert looked toward Evelyn.

She began shaking her head.

“No.””

David stared at her.

“Who?””

Robert said:

“Someone inside your father's company.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Robert.””

Robert looked at him.

“It's time.””

“No.””

“It's gone too far.””

Robert's face hardened.

“You don't understand.””

“I do.””

Thomas reached into the leather folder and removed one final document.

“I found this years ago.””

Robert stared at it.

David took it.

The document was old.

A hospital record.

His birth certificate.

But there was something strange.

A second page had been attached.

A handwritten note.

David read it silently.

Then aloud.

“*Birth mother listed as Elena Vale. Father unknown.*”

His hands began to shake.

“Vale.””

He looked at Robert.

“Jonathan Vale.””

Robert said nothing.

David's face drained of color.

“You knew who my father was.””

Nobody answered.

He looked at Margaret.

“You knew too.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Your biological father was Jonathan.””

David stepped backward.

The world seemed to tilt.

His entire life had just changed again.

But before anyone could speak, Evelyn suddenly grabbed the laptop.

She looked at David.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she turned and ran toward the door.

David shouted her name.

She didn't stop.

And as she disappeared into the darkness outside, the phone in David's hand vibrated.

A new message had arrived.

No number.

No name.

Just one sentence.

*YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU WHAT HAPPENED TO JONATHAN.*

A second message followed.

*BUT SHE WILL.*

May you like

Then, beneath it, an address appeared.

The exact farmhouse where David had been hidden as a baby.
