Chapter 7: The Commander I Trusted
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Not because I believed Zachary.
Because I knew exactly who he was talking about.
General William Carter.
My former commanding officer.
My mentor.
The man who had pinned medals on my uniform.
The man who had stood beside me through some of the hardest years of my life.
The man I had trusted with decisions I couldn’t even share with my own family.
Hannah looked at my face.
She didn’t need me to say the name.
She already knew.
“Dad…”
I slowly lowered the paper.
“No.””
Zachary watched me carefully.
“You know him.””
I looked at him.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You didn’t ask if it was true.””
My eyes hardened.
“I asked you to prove it.””
His smile disappeared.
Good.
People who manipulate others hate demands for facts.
They prefer emotions.
Fear.
Confusion.
Doubt.
But facts were where they lost power.
“Where is General Carter?”” I asked.
Zachary shrugged.
“Probably enjoying Easter with his family.””
“And you expect me to believe he’s involved in this?””
“I expect you to remember who introduced us.””
The words stopped me.
Because they were true.
Seven years ago, when Hannah first met Zachary, I had met him through Carter.
At the time, it seemed natural.
Carter had told me about a brilliant young entrepreneur who was building something important.
A man with discipline.
A man with vision.
“A good man,” Carter had said.
Those words came back now.
A good man.
How many times had I heard that before someone revealed the truth?
I looked at Evelyn.
“Did Claire know Carter?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“Evelyn.””
She took a breath.
“Yes.””
Hannah looked at her.
“What?””
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Claire discovered financial connections between Zachary’s company and several private investment groups.””
“And?””
“One of those groups had ties to General Carter.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at Zachary.
“You’re saying my former commander helped you hide money?””
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
Zachary shook his head.
“I’m saying he helped create the system.””
I stared at him.
“What system?””
“The system that made people like me untouchable.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because the irony was impossible to ignore.
A man who spent his life building a reputation as a protector was now standing in front of me accused of helping someone destroy lives.
But I refused to let suspicion become truth.
Not yet.
“Show me.””
Zachary tilted his head.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
I stepped forward.
“You made an accusation. Now prove it.””
For a few seconds, he simply stared.
Then he looked toward the hidden compartment.
“Check the flash drive.””
Everyone looked at the small device in my hand.
My instincts told me not to rush.
But the truth had to be faced.
I turned toward Evelyn.
“Can we access this safely?””
She nodded.
“There’s a laptop in my car.””
Zachary laughed quietly.
“You still don’t trust me.””
I looked at him.
“Should I?””
He didn’t answer.
A few minutes later, we sat in the mansion’s dining room.
A room designed for celebrations.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
Family gatherings.
Now it felt like an interrogation room.
Evelyn connected the flash drive.
The screen remained blank for several seconds.
Then a folder appeared.
One file.
No title.
Only a date.
The date Claire disappeared.
Lily moved closer.
“That’s it.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You’ve never opened it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Lily swallowed.
“Because my mother told me not to open it alone.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she said the truth could change everything.””
The file opened.
A video appeared.
The quality was poor.
Old.
Shaky.
Then Claire Bennett appeared on screen.
My heart tightened.
She looked tired.
Afraid.
But determined.
Her voice filled the room.
“If you’re watching this, then Zachary failed.””
Nobody moved.
Hannah reached for my hand.
Claire continued.
“I don’t know who found this. I don’t know if I’m alive when this is played.””
Lily covered her mouth.
Her mother’s voice.
After all these years.
“I need you to understand something. Zachary is not the beginning.””
A pause.
“He is the result.””
The room became silent.
“People like Zachary don’t become powerful alone. They are built. Protected. Guided.””
The video shook slightly.
Then Claire looked directly into the camera.
“The person who helped him rise is William Carter.””
My stomach dropped.
Hannah looked at me.
I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
Claire continued.
“Carter helped Zachary gain access to military technology contracts. He helped him build relationships with investors. He helped him create the image of a respected businessman.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Oh my God.””
The video continued.
“But when I discovered where the money was coming from, I became a problem.””
A tear moved down Lily’s face.
“I found evidence of illegal transfers. I found records connecting Zachary and Carter.””
Claire looked away briefly.
Then returned.
“If something happens to me, do not believe the accident report.””
My hands tightened.
Because I had heard those words before.
From the recording.
But now there was more.
“Zachary did not act alone.””
The video froze briefly.
Then continued.
“The person who knows the most is Christopher Montgomery.””
My heart stopped.
My name again.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“Christopher, if you are seeing this, I need you to listen carefully.””
Nobody spoke.
“I know you don’t know me. But I know about your reputation.””
The words felt impossible.
“Zachary trusted your judgment. That is why he wanted your approval.””
I looked at Hannah.
That was true.
Zachary had always wanted me to like him.
He had always asked about my military career.
He had always talked about honor.
Duty.
Responsibility.
Claire continued.
“He knew if Christopher Montgomery believed he was a good man, everyone else would believe it too.””
The room went quiet.
I felt something break inside.
Not because she insulted me.
Because she was right.
My trust had become Zachary’s shield.
Claire’s voice lowered.
“But Christopher, there is one thing you must know.””
The video flickered.
Then she said:
“William Carter was not the only person helping Zachary.””
Everyone froze.
Lily looked confused.
“Not the only person?””
Claire continued.
“There is someone closer.””
The screen showed Claire looking over her shoulder.
Like she was afraid someone was nearby.
“Someone who has access to Christopher’s personal life.””
My blood went cold.
Hannah looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
Claire’s final words played.
“Christopher, look at the people who have been around you since Zachary entered your family.””
The video ended.
No explanation.
No name.
Just darkness.
Nobody spoke.
Then the mansion lights suddenly turned off.
The room went black.
A second later, every phone on the table vibrated.
Mine.
Hannah’s.
Evelyn’s.
Lily’s.
All at the same time.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
No number.
No sender.
Just words.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction, Christopher.*
My blood ran cold.
Because whoever sent it knew exactly what I was doing.
Then another message appeared.
This one only on my phone.
A photograph loaded.
My breath stopped.
It was a picture taken that morning.
Outside my house.
Me walking to my truck.
Taken before Hannah called.
Below the photograph were six words.
*I was watching before you knew.*
I looked around the dark room.
Everyone was silent.
Everyone was afraid.
And for the first time since I entered Zachary Albright’s mansion…
May you like
I realized the person controlling this game had never been inside the house.
They had been watching me from the beginning.
