Chapter 8: The Night My Father Died

The words sat in the air.

*I tried to stop the person who came to your father’s house the night he died.*

I stared at Uncle Raymond.

My uncle.

My father’s brother.

The man who had been standing in our kitchen less than an hour ago.

The man who knew secrets.

The man who had lied.

And now the man who was telling us he had tried to prevent our father’s death.

My mind couldn’t decide whether to believe him or run.

“Raymond,” Adrian said quietly.

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Careful.

“What happened that night?””

Raymond looked at the floor.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he walked over to the old chair and sat down.

He looked exhausted.

“I should have told you sooner.””

I crossed my arms.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“No,” I said.

My voice shook.

“You don’t know.””

Raymond looked at me.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out the person you trusted your whole life was hiding a daughter.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You don’t know what it feels like to discover everyone around you knew something except you.””

My voice broke.

“And then you show up in our father’s house, already knowing about everything.””

Raymond accepted every word.

“I deserve that.””

The basement fell quiet.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Tell us what happened.””

Raymond took a deep breath.

“The night before James died, he called me.””

“Why?””

“He said he found Lily.””

My heart tightened.

“You mean he found her again?””

Raymond nodded.

“He had been searching for months.””

“Why didn’t he tell us?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Raymond looked at me.

“Of losing you.””

The answer hurt.

Because part of me understood.

Dad had always been afraid of hurting us.

But another part of me was tired of understanding.

“Telling the truth would have hurt less than this.””

Raymond looked away.

“I know.””

“What happened after he called you?””

Raymond rubbed his hands together.

“He asked me to come over.””

“To this house?””

“Yes.””

“What time?””

“Almost midnight.””

I pictured Dad sitting alone in the living room.

Waiting.

Planning.

Knowing something was wrong.

“What did he tell you?””

Raymond’s expression darkened.

“He told me Lily had contacted him.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Through the phone?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Raymond looked at the hidden passage.

“Through the old system.””

I frowned.

“What system?””

“Your father had ways of communicating with Lily without anyone knowing.””

My frustration returned.

“Of course he did.””

Raymond looked at me.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like my father had an entire second life.””

He nodded.

“Maybe he did.””

That answer hurt.

But it was honest.

Raymond continued.

“James told me Lily had information.””

“Information about who?””

“The person who had been keeping her hidden.””

I looked at Adrian.

“And?””

“And he wanted to bring her home.””

The words felt strange.

Home.

A place Lily had never known.

“What happened?””

Raymond looked down.

“I arrived at midnight.””

His voice became quieter.

“James was already worried.””

“Why?””

“Because someone had been following him.””

The basement suddenly felt colder.

“Who?””

“He didn’t know.””

Raymond paused.

“But he knew they had access to information only a few people had.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who had access?””

Raymond looked at me.

“Me.””

The answer stunned me.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because James trusted me.””

The silence that followed was uncomfortable.

Raymond continued.

“He gave me documents. Names. Addresses. Everything he had discovered.””

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Raymond looked toward the stairs.

“I heard a car outside.””

Nobody moved.

“I thought it was Lily.””

“Was it?””

“No.””

His face changed.

“It was someone else.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

I hated that answer.

Again.

But this time, I believed him.

Because he looked genuinely haunted.

“What did they do?””

Raymond swallowed.

“They came to the door.””

“And Dad let them in?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Your father knew better.””

I thought about Dad.

The locked doors.

The hidden rooms.

The careful planning.

Maybe he knew exactly how dangerous things had become.

“What happened next?””

Raymond closed his eyes.

“I heard shouting.””

My stomach tightened.

“Between them and Dad?””

“Yes.””

“Did you see the person?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because James told me to hide.””

The answer shocked me.

“He told you to hide?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew if something happened, someone needed to survive.””

I looked at him.

“Someone needed to tell the truth.””

Raymond nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian looked angry.

“So you hid while Dad was in danger?””

Raymond flinched.

“Yes.””

The simple answer made it worse.

“You just let it happen?””

“No.””

His voice suddenly became stronger.

“I didn’t.””

He looked at Adrian.

“I waited until I heard the person leave.””

“Then?””

“I ran upstairs.””

Raymond’s eyes filled with regret.

“James was alive.””

I held my breath.

“He was alive?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“He told me to take the documents and find Lily.””

My heart pounded.

“And then?””

Raymond looked down.

“Then he told me not to call the police.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed the person who attacked him had someone inside the system.””

That was a terrifying thought.

Someone powerful.

Someone connected.

Someone who could erase evidence.

“What did you do?””

Raymond looked ashamed.

“I listened.””

“Why?””

“Because James was afraid.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

“Even when he was dying?””

Raymond’s eyes filled with pain.

“He wasn’t dying yet.””

The words froze me.

“What?””

Raymond’s voice became barely audible.

“He died later.””

I stared.

“Later?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

“Here.””

My stomach dropped.

“In this house?””

Raymond nodded.

“Your father spent his last hours here.””

I felt dizzy.

“The doctors said he died in his sleep.””

Raymond looked at me.

“That’s what we wanted people to believe.””

My anger exploded.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“Everyone lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Raymond looked at me.

“Because James asked me to.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“My father would never ask people to lie about his death.””

Raymond’s expression broke.

“He did.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid that if people knew he had been attacked, the person responsible would know he failed.””

Adrian spoke.

“What do you mean?””

Raymond looked at the key in my hand.

“He wanted the attacker to think they won.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because James had one final plan.””

The cassette player.

The hidden rooms.

The suit.

The photograph.

Everything.

“He knew the truth would eventually come out.””

Raymond looked at us.

“He just didn’t know who would find it.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

This time, there was no warning.

No threat.

Just a location.

An address.

And one sentence.

*If you want the truth about your father, come alone.*

I showed Adrian.

His face changed.

Raymond saw it.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then immediately stood.

“No.””

“What?””

“You cannot go.””

“Why?””

“Because this is a trap.””

Adrian looked at him.

“How do you know?””

Raymond stared at the address.

Because I recognized it.

The color drained from his face.

“Because that place belonged to Evelyn.””

My heart stopped.

“Lily’s mother?””

Raymond nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the message again.

The address.

The invitation.

The mystery.

Someone wanted us there.

But why?

Raymond whispered:

“Your father spent thirty years trying to keep Lily away from that house.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because that is where everything started.””

The basement light flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

Darkness surrounded us.

And from somewhere above us, a voice spoke.

A voice none of us expected to hear.

“Raymond.””

We froze.

Because the voice was not unfamiliar.

It was someone we knew.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone who had just been mentioned in my father’s final warning.

The voice called again.

“Open the door.””

Raymond whispered:

“No.””

Adrian grabbed my arm.

“Who is it?””

Raymond stared toward the ceiling.

And then he said the name that made my entire body go cold.

“Your uncle.””

I frowned.

“Raymond?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His face was filled with fear.

“Another one.””

The voice came again.

“Raymond, I know you’re down there.””

I looked at Adrian.

We both understood at the same time.

There was another secret.

Another person.

Another lie.

Because my father had not just hidden a daughter.

He had hidden an entire truth about our family.

May you like

And whoever was standing upstairs…

Was the person Dad had been afraid of all along.
