Chapter 9: The Last Secret Before the Truth
For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Someone I trusted.
Those three words were heavier than anything Marcus had done.
Because Marcus was easy to hate.
He was the enemy.
The person who wanted power.
The person who manipulated my marriage.
But someone inside my own life?
Someone who knew my fears?
Someone who knew I was pregnant before Julian did?
That was different.
“Clara,” I said slowly.
“Who?””
There was silence.
Too much silence.
“Clara.””
“I’m trying to confirm it before I accuse anyone.””
My heart pounded.
“Who has access to those records?””
“I have a list.””
“Then tell me.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“The first name on the list is Dr. Rebecca Hayes.””
I froze.
The kitchen suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Rebecca.
My doctor.
My friend.
The woman who held my hand through the most terrifying months of my life.
The woman who knew my babies before anyone else.
“No.””
Julian looked at me.
“What?””
I didn’t answer.
Clara continued.
“I’m not saying she did it.””
“She wouldn’t.””
The words came out instantly.
Julian noticed.
“You trust her.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
He didn’t challenge me.
He just asked:
“Why?””
Because she was there.
Because when I was alone and terrified, she was the person who told me I could survive.
Because she knew every appointment.
Every fear.
Every tear.
“She saved my life.””
Julian looked away.
And I knew what he was thinking.
Someone could be kind and still betray you.
I hated that he was right.
We met Dr. Hayes the next morning.
She looked exactly as I remembered.
Soft smile.
Gray hair pulled back neatly.
Gentle eyes.
For a moment, I wanted to believe this was all a mistake.
I wanted her to laugh.
I wanted her to say Clara had the wrong information.
Instead, when she saw Julian standing beside me, her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You know why we’re here,” I said.
Her face fell.
“Evelyn.””
The way she said my name hurt.
Because it sounded like guilt.
Not surprise.
Julian stepped forward.
“Did you give my brother information about my wife’s pregnancy?””
Dr. Hayes looked at him.
Then at me.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
My heart dropped.
Never wanted.
Not “I didn’t.””
“I never wanted.””
The difference mattered.
“You did,” I whispered.
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I felt something break.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
Like a piece of glass cracking inside my chest.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I was pressured.””
“By Marcus?””
“Yes.””
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“How?””
Dr. Hayes sat down.
“I had financial problems.””
I stared.
“Financial problems?””
She nodded.
“Years ago, my husband’s medical bills left us with significant debt.””
My anger fought with my confusion.
“So Marcus paid you?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He threatened me.””
Julian frowned.
“With what?””
She looked at me.
“He knew about a mistake I made.””
My stomach tightened.
“What mistake?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The pregnancy test results.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Your first blood test showed complications.””
I remembered.
The early weeks.
The fear.
The uncertainty.
She continued.
“Your pregnancy was considered high risk. I ordered additional monitoring.””
“Yes.””
“I told Marcus because he came to the clinic pretending to be Julian’s assistant.””
My blood went cold.
“He lied.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
She looked ashamed.
“I thought he was helping.””
Julian stepped closer.
“He knew my name?””
“He knew everything.””
Of course he did.
Marcus had spent years collecting information.
Waiting.
Planning.
“What did he ask you?””
Dr. Hayes looked at me.
“He asked if you were pregnant.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you told him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because he threatened to expose me.””
I looked at her.
“Expose what?””
She started crying.
“I had accidentally entered incorrect insurance information for a patient years before.””
I frowned.
“That’s it?””
“Yes.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because after all this.
After five years.
After losing my marriage.
After raising three daughters alone.
The reason was a mistake.
A fear.
A threat.
A moment of weakness.
“He told me he would destroy my career,” she whispered.
Julian looked at her coldly.
“So you destroyed ours instead.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
On the way home, I said nothing.
Julian didn’t either.
For once, silence wasn’t uncomfortable.
It was just heavy.
When we arrived, the girls ran outside.
“Mommy!””
I smiled automatically.
But inside, I felt exhausted.
Ava noticed.
“You’re sad again.””
I knelt down.
“No, sweetheart.””
She looked at me.
“You do the face.””
I smiled sadly.
“You really notice everything.””
“Yes.””
She touched my cheek.
“Daddy says feelings are like weather.””
I looked at Julian.
He looked surprised.
“When did I say that?””
“Yesterday.””
She nodded.
“Sometimes storms happen, but they go away.””
My throat tightened.
Five-year-old wisdom.
Simple.
Beautiful.
Painful.
I hugged her.
And for the first time in days, I let myself breathe.
That night, Julian found me sitting outside.
“You okay?””
I looked at the stars.
“No.””
He sat beside me.
“I’m not either.””
A quiet moment passed.
Then he said:
“I owe you an apology.””
I smiled faintly.
“You’ve said that.””
“I know.””
“Many times.””
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“So what makes this different?””
He looked down.
“Because before, I was apologizing for hurting you.””
A pause.
“Now I’m apologizing because I finally understand what I took from you.””
I didn’t speak.
“You weren’t just my wife.””
He swallowed.
“You were my partner.””
The word stayed between us.
Partner.
The thing everyone else had forgotten.
The thing Marcus tried to erase.
“I should have protected you.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
No hesitation.
“Yes, you should have.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
The acceptance surprised me.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
“Good.””
He smiled slightly.
“Still honest.””
“Always.””
For the first time in years, that honesty didn’t feel like a weapon.
It felt like something we were rebuilding.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The next morning, Clara arrived with the final evidence.
She looked serious.
“This ends today.””
Julian opened the folder.
“What is it?””
“Proof Marcus planned everything.””
Inside were emails.
Financial transfers.
Communication records.
A timeline.
I read through them.
The first message was dated months before my divorce.
My hands went cold.
“He planned this before the argument.””
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
Julian stared.
“He was preparing.””
“For what?””
Clara looked at him.
“For control of the company.””
She pointed to another document.
“He believed if Evelyn left, the board would view you as unstable.””
Julian’s expression hardened.
“He wanted them to remove me.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Clara answered quietly.
“He would become interim CEO.””
The room was silent.
Marcus had not just wanted me gone.
He wanted Julian broken.
That afternoon, Julian called a board meeting.
I went with him.
Not because I wanted power.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because my name had been erased.
And I was done letting other people tell my story.
The board members looked shocked when they saw me.
Some recognized me.
Others didn’t.
Julian stood at the front.
“I need to address something.””
The room became quiet.
He looked at me.
Then at everyone else.
“For five years, a false story has existed about the foundation of this company.””
He placed documents on the table.
“Today, that story ends.””
Marcus wasn’t there.
But his lawyers were.
They looked nervous.
Good.
Julian continued.
“Evelyn Vance was not my assistant.””
He paused.
“She was my partner.””
The room stayed silent.
“She helped create the technology this company was built on.””
He looked at me.
“And I failed to acknowledge that.””
My chest tightened.
Not because he praised me.
Because he admitted his failure publicly.
Without being forced.
Without protecting himself.
Then the doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Marcus walked in.
Calm.
Confident.
Still believing he could control the room.
He looked at Julian.
Then me.
And smiled.
“You finally found the truth.””
Julian stared at him.
“You’re finished.””
Marcus laughed.
“No.””
He looked around the boardroom.
“You still don’t understand.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
Marcus smiled.
“The documents you found prove I manipulated the divorce.””
He stepped closer.
“But they don’t prove one thing.””
Julian narrowed his eyes.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
Then said:
“They don’t prove Evelyn was ever legally married to you.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?””
Marcus smiled.
“Because five years ago…”
May you like
He placed a document on the table.
“I made sure your marriage certificate disappeared too.””
