Chapter 6 - THE FACE FROM THE PAST

I stayed up all night reading that letter. Over and over again.
Every word changed everything. Vanessa wasn't just a woman I had dated. She was a stranger who had deliberately inserted herself into my life, wearing a mask, hiding her true identity, waiting for her moment to take Claire's place.
The next morning, I made a decision.
"I'm going to the city records office," I told Mom over breakfast. "And to the hospital where Claire worked. If Claire was right, there are records. Complaints. Restraining orders. Something under her real name."
Mom nodded, her face serious. "Be careful, Adrian. And take your phone. Call me the moment you find anything."
I promised I would. I kissed Mia goodbye, telling her I would be back soon, and drove away.
I spent the entire day digging.
First, I went to the hospital where Claire had worked. It took hours of talking to administrators, explaining who I was, showing them my identification, signing forms. But eventually, they pulled old records.
And there it was.
Years earlier, a woman named Elena Vance had been involved in a harassment case against one of the hospital's doctors. She had been obsessed with him. When he became engaged to another woman, Elena had threatened to harm the fiancée. A restraining order had been filed. Elena had vanished shortly afterward, leaving no forwarding address.
And attached to the file was a photograph.
I stared at it. My heart stopped.
It was Vanessa.
Younger. Darker hair. But unmistakably her.
Her name wasn't Vanessa. It was Elena. And she had done this before. Exactly the same pattern. Obsession. Threats. Trying to replace someone else's fiancée.
She had changed her name. She had changed her appearance. She had waited years. And then she had found me—widowed, vulnerable, grieving—and she had stepped into the exact same role.
I left the hospital with copies of every document, every complaint, every statement. My hands were shaking as I walked to my car. I had proof. I had her real name. I had her history.
Elena Vance. A woman with a documented history of dangerous obsession.
I drove toward my mother's house, my mind racing. I needed to call the police. I needed to show them everything. I needed to get a restraining order against her, one that would keep her away from Mia and me forever.
But as I turned onto the street leading to my mother's house, I saw something that turned my blood to ice.
A police car. Parked outside.
And my mother standing on the porch, talking to the officers. She was crying.
I slammed on the brakes. I jumped out of the car and ran toward the house.
"Mom!" I called out.
She turned and saw me. Her face crumpled. She ran down the steps and grabbed my arms.
"Adrian," she sobbed. "Thank God you're back."
"What happened?" I asked, looking past her toward the house. "Where is Mia?"
Mom took a shaky breath. Tears streamed down her face.
"She's gone," Mom whispered.
The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
"What do you mean... gone?" I asked, my voice barely working.
"She was here," Mom said, her voice trembling. "We were in the living room. I turned away for just one minute to get a glass of water from the kitchen. And when I came back... she wasn't there. The front door was open. And there was a note on the table."
One of the officers stepped forward and handed me a piece of paper.
My hands shook as I took it. I already knew what it would say.
Written in that same familiar handwriting, were four words.
*SHE IS WITH ME.*
I gripped the paper until my knuckles turned white. The documents I had spent all day gathering—the proof, the records, the truth about Elena Vance—suddenly felt like nothing.
She had taken Mia.
Elena. Vanessa. Whatever name she was using... she had my daughter.
I looked up at the officer, my vision blurring.
"She didn't just take her," I said, my voice cracking. "She threatened her. She hurt her before. I have proof. Her name is Elena Vance. She has a history of violence and obsession. I have the records right here."
I handed over the hospital documents and the restraining order files. The officer took them, reading quickly. His expression grew serious.
"We will issue an Amber Alert immediately," he said. "Every officer in the county will be looking for them. We will find her, Mr. Sterling. We will find your daughter."
But as I stood there on the porch, holding that note, staring at the empty doorway where Mia had been only hours earlier, one thought kept hammering through my mind.
She had Mia. And she had taken her because she believed that if she couldn't have me... then no one could.
What would she do with a child she already resented? A child she had already hurt? A child who reminded her of the woman she wanted to erase from existence?
I pulled out my phone. I stared at the screen. I didn't know her number anymore. I had blocked it. But I knew she would be expecting me to call. She wanted me to beg. She wanted me to plead. She wanted me to do exactly what she said.
May you like
And I would. Because she had Mia.
Whatever Elena wanted... I would give it to her. Even if it cost me everything.
