Chapter 18 - THE SHADOW FADESThe trial ended one week later. Rachel, Marcus, and Lucas — along with Dr. Sterling and the others — were all convicted. Rachel and Marcus testified fully, their statements dismantling every lie Julian had sown. Lucas pleaded guilty, his defense arguing years of manipulation and psychological abuse. Arthur’s testimony — and Margaret’s — completed the record.

Margaret stood before the press afterward, bruised, weary, but unbroken.
— Julian Vale spent forty years trying to destroy us, she told them all. He lied. He stole. He poisoned his own children’s minds from prison. But in the end? Hatred cannot build. It can only eat itself away. And truth? Truth outlasts every lie.
She turned to walk back inside. David stood waiting, quiet pride in his eyes.
— It is truly over, he said.
— Yes, Margaret said. The shadow is gone. Now we build.
In the months that followed, the estate healed. The greenhouse was restored. The library filled again. The Holloway name stood not perfect, but honest — its mistakes known, its courage clear.
Margaret visited Lucas once, in prison. She did not bring arguments or accusations. She brought him books — history, philosophy, stories of people who had risen from darkness to become something new.
— Julian gave you lies, she told him. Here is the world as it truly is. You choose what you make of it.
Lucas said nothing. But he took the books. And as she turned to leave, he spoke, so quietly she almost missed it:
May you like
— Thank you.
Margaret did not look back. She walked out into the sunlight, letting the door close behind her.
