Chapter 3: The Secret My Mother Knew

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of the pain.

Not because of the stitches.

Not because Clara woke up every few hours needing to be fed.

I stayed awake because of one sentence.

“You have no idea what I know about Ethan.””

My mother’s voice kept replaying in my head.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her standing near my hospital bed with that quiet confidence.

Like she knew something I didn’t.

Like she had been waiting for the perfect moment to use it.

And the worst part was that she had chosen the day my daughter was born.

The day I was supposed to feel safe.

The day I was supposed to be surrounded by people who loved me.

Instead, I was lying in a hospital room wondering if the person I trusted most was hiding something from me.

At 3:17 in the morning, Clara started crying.

I immediately pushed the thoughts away.

My daughter needed me.

That was all that mattered.

I carefully lifted her from the bassinet beside my bed, moving slowly because every shift in my body reminded me of the surgery.

“Hey, sweetheart,” I whispered.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

And for a few minutes, everything else disappeared.

No mother.

No sister.

No secrets.

Just me and my baby girl.

Then the door opened.

I looked up quickly.

My heart jumped.

But it wasn’t Ethan.

It was a nurse carrying a small tray.

“Checking on you both,” she said softly.

I smiled weakly.

“Thank you.””

She adjusted Clara’s blanket and checked the monitor.

Then she looked at me.

“You have a lot of visitors for someone who just gave birth.””

I gave a tired laugh.

“Unfortunately.””

The nurse hesitated.

“Are you okay with them coming back?””

The question caught me off guard.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Good.””

I looked at her.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“Sometimes people think having a baby means everyone gets automatic access to you. They forget the mother is recovering too.””

Those words almost broke me.

Because someone who had known me for less than a day understood something my own family didn’t.

I looked down at Clara.

“I think I forgot that too.””

The nurse smiled gently.

“Try not to.””

After she left, I stared at my phone.

Six missed calls.

All from my mother.

Three messages.

The first one said:

*We need to finish this conversation.*

The second:

*Don’t make decisions while you’re emotional.*

The third:

*Ask Ethan what he told me.*

My stomach tightened.

I stared at the screen.

What did that mean?

What could Ethan possibly have told her?

I wanted to call him immediately.

But something stopped me.

Not because I didn’t trust him.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that if I asked the question, I might hear an answer I couldn’t handle.

At 7:40 in the morning, Ethan finally walked in.

The second I saw him, I almost cried.

He looked exhausted.

His hair was messy, his shirt wrinkled, and there were dark circles under his eyes.

But the moment he saw me, his entire face softened.

“There are my girls.””

He crossed the room quickly.

First, he kissed my forehead.

Then he carefully leaned over and kissed Clara’s tiny head.

“How are you feeling?””

I watched him.

Really watched him.

This was the man who had held my hand while doctors rushed me into surgery.

The man who had cried when he heard Clara’s first cry.

The man who had whispered, “Thank you for bringing her to me,” while I was barely awake.

Could he really be hiding something?

“Nat?””

I realized I hadn’t answered.

“I’m okay.””

His eyes narrowed.

He knew me too well.

“No, you’re not.””

I looked away.

“What happened?””

I took a breath.

I didn’t know how to begin.

So I just said the thing that scared me most.

“My mother said she knows something about you.””

The color drained from his face.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

And my heart sank.

Ethan noticed my expression.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“What exactly did she say?””

I repeated the words.

“You have no idea what I know about Ethan.””

He was silent.

Too silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Ethan.””

He sat down slowly beside the bed.

“Natalie…”

Those two words terrified me more than anything.

Because there was hesitation in them.

And Ethan never hesitated with me.

“What is it?””

He rubbed his hands together.

A nervous habit I had seen only a few times in our marriage.

“I should have told you.””

My heart dropped.

“Told me what?””

He looked at Clara.

Then back at me.

“About your family.””

I frowned.

“What does my family have to do with you?””

He swallowed.

“A few months ago, your mother contacted me.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“At first, she said it was about Brielle.””

Of course.

My sister.

“Keep going.””

“She told me Brielle was struggling financially.””

I felt a cold feeling spread through me.

“She asked you for money?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“She asked me not to tell you something.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said if I loved you, I would understand.””

My fingers curled around Clara’s blanket.

“What did she want?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“She wanted me to help pay for Brielle’s party.””

I blinked.

The room felt strangely quiet.

“You’re joking.””

“I wish I was.””

My mind raced.

“So she came to me because you said no?””

“I never said no.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He sighed.

“I told her I wasn’t comfortable making financial decisions behind your back.””

I felt a small wave of relief.

But it disappeared quickly.

“What else?””

He looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was more.

“What else did she say?””

Ethan was quiet for several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“She threatened me.””

My stomach twisted.

“With what?””

He looked at me.

“With telling you something about my past.””

I stared.

“What past?””

Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door.

Both of us froze.

A man stood there.

Not a doctor.

Not a nurse.

A stranger.

He was probably in his late fifties, wearing a dark suit and holding a brown envelope.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Ethan.

“Natalie Mercer?””

I sat up slightly.

“Yes?””

He stepped inside.

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””

Ethan immediately stood.

“Why are you here?””

The man’s expression hardened.

“I was hoping you could tell me that.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the envelope in his hand.

Then he looked at Clara.

“I was asked to deliver these documents before your mother could reach you.””

My face went cold.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She contacted me yesterday.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

The man placed the envelope on the table.

“She specifically instructed me that if she failed to convince you to cooperate…”

He paused.

My fingers tightened around Clara.

“To give this to you instead.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“Proof.””

My heart raced.

“Proof of what?””

His eyes moved toward Ethan.

And the next words changed everything.

“Proof that your husband has been keeping a secret from you for years.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face had gone completely pale.

May you like

And for the first time since I met him…

I wondered if my mother had been telling the truth.
