Chapter 5: The Night Logan Disappeared
The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The hospital room around me disappeared.
The machines.
The lights.
The voices.
Everything faded until there was only one image.
Logan standing outside our apartment.
Seven months earlier.
The night he left.
And beside him…
Dr. Robert Wright.
His father.
The man who had just spent hours telling me he wanted answers too.
The man who had cried when he saw my son.
The man who claimed he didn’t know why Logan disappeared.
My eyes lifted slowly.
Dr. Wright looked at the photograph.
And I watched the blood drain from his face.
“You were there.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than if he had lied.
“You were there the night he left me.””
The doctor looked away.
“Joanna…”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
My body was exhausted.
I had just given birth.
But anger has a strange way of creating strength.
“Don’t say my name like you’re sorry.””
His expression tightened.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Find out what?””
My voice cracked.
“That you were part of it?””
His wife looked at him.
“Robert…”
But I didn’t take my eyes off him.
“You told me you didn’t know why Logan left.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Silence.
The police officer stood near the doorway, watching carefully.
I looked at him.
“Officer, why do you have this picture?””
He stepped forward.
“We recovered it from security footage near your apartment building.””
“When?””
“Three days ago.””
My heart skipped.
“Why now?””
The officer glanced at Dr. Wright.
“Because we didn’t know who the second person was until today.””
I looked at the doctor.
“And now you do.””
“Yes.””
The room felt unbearably small.
I looked down at Ethan.
My son was still sleeping.
Completely unaware.
I wondered how many secrets had surrounded him before he even opened his eyes.
“Everyone leave,” I said.
The officer blinked.
“Ms. Miller—”
“Except Dr. Wright.””
The doctor looked surprised.
I looked at him.
“I want answers.””
The officer nodded.
“I’ll wait outside.””
When the door closed, only three people remained.
Me.
Dr. Wright.
And the man who had once been my entire world, even though he wasn’t physically there.
Logan.
I placed the photograph on the table.
“Start talking.””
Dr. Wright stood silently.
Then he walked toward the window.
“I went to your apartment because Logan called me.””
“Why?””
“He wanted to confront me.””
“About the records?””
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.””
“And what did you say?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was becoming a pattern.
Finally, he turned around.
“I told him he didn’t understand what he had found.””
“That sounds like something a guilty person would say.””
His face showed pain.
“I know.””
“Did you threaten him?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I studied him.
“Then why did he write that he needed protection?””
“Because he was scared.””
“Of you?””
Dr. Wright looked down.
“No.””
“Then who?””
“I don’t know.””
I laughed softly.
“You really don’t know much for someone who keeps appearing at the center of everything.””
That hit him.
He looked away.
I hated that a small part of me felt sorry for him.
Because he was Logan’s father.
Because he looked broken.
But broken people could still hurt others.
“What happened after that conversation?””
Dr. Wright’s hands tightened.
“Logan left.””
“Just like that?””
“Yes.””
“You didn’t follow him?””
“No.””
“Why?””
His silence returned.
I leaned forward.
“Why, Robert?””
He finally said:
“Because he told me he never wanted to see me again.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked at him.
“Did you believe him?””
“No.””
“Then why did you let him go?””
The doctor’s eyes became wet.
“Because I had already lost him once.””
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
He sat down.
“When Logan was younger, I made choices that hurt him.””
“What choices?””
“I thought being successful meant being a good father.””
He gave a bitter smile.
“I was wrong.””
The room became quiet.
Then he continued.
“After Logan discovered the medical records, he told me I had become exactly what he hated.””
“What did he mean?””
“He believed I cared more about protecting my reputation than protecting people.””
I looked at the photograph.
“And was he right?””
The doctor didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I looked toward the baby.
“My son’s grandfather changed records.””
Dr. Wright flinched.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like Logan found out who you really were.””
His eyes closed.
“Yes.””
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
The officer returned.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
He looked at me.
“There’s one more thing you should know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He held a small evidence bag.
Inside was a phone.
A familiar phone.
My breath caught.
“That’s Logan’s.””
The officer nodded.
“It was recovered from the vehicle where he was found.””
My hands went cold.
“Can I see it?””
“Not yet. It’s evidence.””
“Please.””
The officer hesitated.
Then looked at Dr. Wright.
The doctor nodded.
The officer carefully placed it on the table.
“We found something on it.””
“What?””
“A video.””
My heart started pounding.
“From Logan?””
“Yes.””
The officer looked at the phone.
“It was recorded the night he disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
“Can we watch it?””
The officer unlocked the device.
The screen lit up.
For a second, I saw Logan’s face.
My heart shattered.
It had been seven months since I saw him.
Seven months since I heard his voice.
He looked tired.
Scared.
Not like a man leaving.
Like a man running out of time.
The video started.
Logan looked directly into the camera.
“Joanna…”
My hand flew to my mouth.
Hearing his voice almost broke me.
“If you’re watching this, then I couldn’t fix it myself.””
Tears filled my eyes.
The video continued.
“I need you to know something.””
Logan looked behind him nervously.
“My father isn’t the only person involved.””
Dr. Wright froze.
“What?””
Nobody looked away from the screen.
Logan continued.
“There’s someone else. Someone closer than you think.””
He paused.
“I tried to protect you by leaving.””
A tear slid down my cheek.
“I know that sounds impossible. I know it sounds like an excuse.””
His voice cracked.
“But if I stayed, they would come after you.””
The screen shook slightly.
Then Logan whispered:
“I found proof.””
The room became silent.
“Proof that the accident wasn’t an accident.””
My heart stopped.
“What accident?”” I whispered.
Dr. Wright looked horrified.
The video continued.
“The person responsible knows I have the evidence.””
Logan looked directly into the camera.
“And they know exactly where Joanna lives.””
A sound came from the background.
A door opening.
Logan turned suddenly.
His face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then the video became shaky.
“Wait…”
A voice came from off-screen.
A voice I couldn’t identify.
Logan stepped backward.
“No. You shouldn’t be here.””
The screen went dark.
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then the officer spoke quietly.
“We believe that person may have been connected to his disappearance.””
I stared at the black screen.
My heart was racing.
Because there was something I couldn’t ignore.
One detail.
One terrible detail.
Before the video ended…
Logan had looked directly at the person who entered.
And the last thing he said wasn’t a warning.
It was a name.
A name that made Dr. Wright whisper:
“No…”
I turned toward him.
“What?””
His face had gone completely pale.
“Who was it?””
He looked at me.
And slowly said:
“Your doctor.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
Dr. Wright stared at the screen.
“The person Logan was afraid of…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“Was the doctor who delivered you and Ethan today.””
