Chapter 13 - THE SECRET IN THE ATTIC

Life settled into a new rhythm.
Vanessa moved out of the guest wing and into a regular bedroom down the hall. We did not pretend to be husband and wife. We were partners of a different kind—bound by shared trauma, shared protection of the girls, and a slow, growing respect that had nothing to do with the lies that had brought us together.
Three months after Marcus's arrest, Olivia came running to me one Saturday afternoon, holding an old brass key.
"I was helping Vanessa sort things in the attic," she said breathlessly. "And I found this taped to the back of an old photograph frame. It has Elena's initials on it. E.C. What do you think it opens?"
My heart skipped a beat.
Elena's initials. A key from the attic. Something she had hidden away.
I took the key carefully. It was heavy, old, beautifully crafted.
"Show me," I said.
We went up to the attic together. Vanessa was there, dusting trunks, sunlight slanting through the cobwebbed windows. Olivia held up the key. Vanessa's eyes widened.
"I've never seen that before," she said. "And I've gone through nearly everything up here."
We searched for an hour. We checked every box, every trunk, every locked cabinet. Nothing matched. Until Vanessa stopped before a small, dusty door at the far end of the attic—one I had always assumed led to nothing but roofing materials.
She inserted the key. It turned with a smooth, satisfying click.
We looked at one another. Olivia reached out and pushed the door open.
Inside was a small, quiet room. It had once been Elena's private studio. An easel stood by the window. Paintbrushes rested in jars. And on a table beneath the window lay a single wooden box, beautifully carved, with Elena's initials inlaid in mother-of-pearl.
My hands trembled as I lifted the lid.
Inside were letters. Notebooks. And a thick, sealed envelope marked To be opened only after my death and only by Adrian.
I sat on the edge of the table. I broke the seal. I unfolded the paper. Elena's handwriting rushed up to meet me.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then I am gone. And I want you to know something I never had the courage to say aloud. I knew I was dying. And I knew how hard it would be for you. So I made a plan.*
My breath caught.
*I knew there were people who might try to take advantage of my absence. People who knew my family name. People who knew you were grieving and vulnerable. So I wrote this letter to tell you: trust carefully. Watch for strangers. Watch for anyone who claims to be related to me or knows secrets about our past. I had a brother, Adrian. A baby brother. He died before I was born. But I never told anyone outside my family. I wanted to protect his memory.*
The room tilted.
*If anyone ever claims to be my brother… they are lying. And they mean you harm. Trust no one with that claim. It is the only test I can leave you to separate truth from lies.*
I lowered the letter slowly. Vanessa stood beside me, her eyes wide.
"Marcus claimed to be Elena's brother," she whispered.
"And Elena left proof that he couldn't be," I finished. "Six years ago. Before she died. She knew. Somehow… she knew someone might come."
I looked at the date at the bottom of the letter.
May you like
Elena had written it three days before she died.
She had known. She had suspected. And she had left me exactly what I needed to save us all.
